Omar, thanks so much for this great video! Very pracrtical and useful! I was wondering if you had any more comments regarding the flash bounce, flash diffuser, depending on the size of the room, height of the ceiling, etc. i.e: should I always have a diffuser on my flash (but then it'll reduce the intensity)? Point it as the subject directly? (but maybe it'll light up things around and behind the subject). Or should I have no diffuser and bounce off the ceiling? (but what if it's too high..). For the diffuser I have the Godox Dome diffuser which is kind of diffusing everywhere. Thanks so much!

@imjonlacey
@imjonlacey Жыл бұрын
@@mandysteinback7387 I guess that would depend on how much experience you have, at the events I shoot im taking candid photos and adjusting the light manually depending on room changes and distance the subject is (I love candid shots with a 200mm across the room 👌), shoot and check the image after every couple of shots - also in a 3 hour event im taking 2000+ images and only 200 or so come out great quality, so keep that in mind

I can't tell you how many tutorials I've went through trying to learn the basics of flash (and having to just learn in on the fly by doing it). And always you're left feeling confused and not sure how to use it in practical applications. But this video is so simple and straightforward. It's excellent. Seriously. I find TTL useful, skips the dimming/adjusting part of it. You basically just have to work on your shutter speed according to ambient and let the flash work the distance to the subjects and adjust its power. Most time works well. I live around 800 ISO, F4.0, usually 1/60 is a good shutter to capture the ambient light and still freeze the subject.

I think it's because sometimes you need to bounce the flash off the walls so you will need more power than the camera thinks it needs, so you manually adjust it accordingly.

I have Been using TTL and then adjusting flash power. This gives me the ability to do much better now. I do have a second flash. I probably won't need it? it seems like one flash is enough. Where would the second flash go if I used it? on the side of the group?

Example ISO 1000 shutter 1/80. The flash blows it out. How do you solve that or are these flash just trash for low light

Hi Omar, I know this video is old, but I'm hoping you can respond. I shoot events, and often I'm walking in and out of multiple rooms, with different brightness in each. Is there some reason I can't leave my flash in TTL mode ... with a set aperture, speed and ISO on my camera? It seems a pain to have to take several test shots in each room to find the correct exposure. Thanks!

So I have a Canon R6. I am going to a Club event Friday. First one been invited to. Anyways, I have a RF 50mm 1.8 and a RF 24-105 F4 L. Obviously using the 1.8 will bring in a crap ton more of light, but using a flash, would that be even necessary? Atleast with the 24-105 I can move to 35, 50 or even 85 if i needed to or would u suggest just sticking with the 50 1.8 for the event?

Omar, I didn’t take you for a TTL hater before this. Discussion of setting exposure for the background was probably the best I’ve seen. Then, you go through extensive trials to get the exposure for the central person. TTL does that automatically, almost every time, nothing is perfect, not even manual flash adjustment. Slow shutter speeds can allow motion blur to affect the central person. If you want that, great. Else, use a speed near the flash sync speed. This might be especially important at a significant event like a wedding. I wish I had remembered that recently.
