“The new Neve 1073 Preamp & EQ Collection sounds amazing. Super warm, and just like the real thing.” - Trevor Lawrence Jr. (Eminem, Herbie Hancock, Dr. Dre)
The Neve 1073 Channel Amplifier is the most revered preamp and EQ circuit ever designed. Introduced in 1970, this hallowed class-A, transistor mic/line amp with EQ, epitomizes the beautiful "Neve sound," with unparalleled clarity and bite. The new Neve 1073 Preamp & EQ Collection can be used within your DAW for mixing, or as a mic preamp with UA Audio Interfaces in Unison mode for tracking.
By the end of this video, you will learn how to add the classic Neve character and dimension to drums, bass and vocals. While mixing these instruments, you’ll begin to understand the workflow of the channel strip as well as its key features.
Starting with the 1073’s famous “red knob,” which changes both line gain and mic levels, you’ll learn how to operate the classic Neve preamp & EQ controls to dial in the perfect amount of warmth, color and tasteful distortion on drums. Gannon demonstrates this on the kick, snare, and overheads of his mix, showing you how they sound with and without the Neve 1073.
Next, learn how to shape the tone of a bass using a combination of EQ and tweaking the preamp impedance.
And of course, the Neve 1073 is famous for making vocals sound realer than real - learn how to craft a too-good-to-be-true vocal sound by dialing up the gain, and adjusting the EQ for a silky smooth vocal that sits perfectly in the mix.
“The Neve 1073 plug-in adds another dimension to the sound. The harmonics are fantastic and the output fader lets you drive the line amp harder and reduce output level… just like I do on the console.” - Ryan Hewitt (The Avett Brothers, Red Hot Chili Peppers)

@PuRe_AdDicT
@PuRe_AdDicT 4 жыл бұрын
pandemic7 Hi, all it means is that you open the plugin and set it how you like, then record the audio through the plugins effect. You then replace the old audio file with your new audio file which includes the effects of the plugin. You can then turn off the plugin to save processing because you have printed the process to a new audio file

I may be alone but I've yet to hear any software based preamp emulate successfully the transformer growl, especially in the lower register of a voice. Demoed this and most of the Aqua plugins and they all sound great and give a nice "Neve" tone. The word hasn't been invented yet but when singing into a good transformer, it elicits a mid/low sound, growl that is just missing in software. Maybe it's not possible to program without it sounding fake. IMHO of course!

How did you record two tracks of bass? Did you split the quarter inch through a DI into the Hi-Z input and then also send the bass amp mic XLR into the UNISON pre? or can did you (can you?) take a channel in CONSOLE and duplicate it so its sending two tracks into the DAW at once, one processed and one dry?
@UniversalAudio

Yes, split before the hardware. Once you connect via the HiZ Unison "takes over" and you cannot split it inside Console.

@UniversalAudio
@UniversalAudio 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike. a few come to mind.... the Avalon for a cleaner vibe, or possibly the 610s for a little color. Of course you can never go wrong with the vintage Neves-in this case we'd choose 1084 since you might want/need a low pass filter. The API Vision is great with ribbons because it has a lot of gain. But really all the pres work great with ribbons because they all have a clean digital out that will get you as much gain as you could need. Hope this helps.

okay I am a little confused still, what is the difference between using it as a preamp and using it as a plugin in the daw? is there much of a difference? Also, another thing that confuses me is the difference between mic/line in, is there a difference while recording vocals?
@UniversalAudio
@UniversalAudio 3 жыл бұрын
As a preamp it can handle mic level inputs for recording. As a plugin in the DAW, it's at "line level" for processing previously recorded material. For recording vocals, you'd set it to mic.

Correct. To record vocals through it, you need an Apollo with its DSP chips which can run the plugin in real time with low latency.

So you could use this as a preamp? I get confused by preamp plugins. Doesn't the hardware drive the signal?
@UniversalAudio
@UniversalAudio 6 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. With Unison-enabled plug-ins such as the Neve 1073, Apollo's hardware preamps fully integrate with the software (you can control the gain staging of the plug-in from Apollo). This allows the mic preamps to sound and behave like these tube and solid-state designs, by capturing the all-important impedance, gain stage “sweet spots,” and component-level circuit behaviors. Here's our web page explaining how to set this up: www.uaudio.com/blog/unison-quick-tip/

Most of the presets have the gain set to -20. I can’t get any decent signal level in my DAW at that level. The record bar in the track doesn’t even show a waveform. I need to ramp it up to about 50 before I get a decent signal. The 1073 fader and output are just left at default level. What am I doing wrong? Mic is SE z5600 mk2. I start to get a lot of artefacts, sputter and distortion on vocals but if I drop the gain I literally can’t get a decent signal. Somebody help!!

They don't measure up to Hardware, at least the API stuff. But for 1/10th the price its worth it. I hooked my API A2D to the front end bypassing the A/D on the Apollo Quad and compared it to the API Channel Strip in Unison mode. There is no comparison! The Channel strip sounds cool, but the API A2D is pristine. It's the difference between amateur and pro.

UAD state that all there plug-ins are more reliable than hardware, Why are they dropping support for 3 or 4 year OSX software, Are they saying hardware don't last past 4 years. They have dropped support for UAD2 in OSX Lion, 4 year life span? We all pay a lot of money for there plug-ins. We all help to take there compony into the future. Mark I am not saying plug-ins are not usable but it sometimes gets stupid. I work every week for several hours with an vintage design 1073 clone. It feels and behaves different. Sure there are some great plugs but most of them are not coded by the big brands. I still use the compressors of logic 9 for example and I do use some saturation on the output. it a great sounding compressor plug in. and the best of it all it covers a wide range of the cases. It can be super fast or slow as an Opto…. I really do not know why I bought some much UAD plugs. I was to 80% coverd with the stock plugs of logic 6 back in the days.

Andreas Oberholz ZDont believe the hype, I know guys that have done tv shows and well known horror movies and only use the stock Logic plug ins NO 3rd party. Meanwhile, UA sells one digital copy of a neve pre/eq for the same price as logic 10. Plug ins are a rackett, they have come a long way, and the new Apollo is closer but I would say 50% like the real thing. Not bad, could be worse you could have bought all those terrible waves bundles that are loosing value by the day.

@andreasoberholz 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah I see/hear that plugs have come a long way and I respect UAD for the hard work. But you know I am over saturated with plug ins. I also get sometimes free ones just that I use them....it is all interesting but it keeps me away from working/creating. I like the Slate concept of the virtual mix rack for a simple reason: I do not have to fight with with many different plug in windows. It helps me to get the mix fast together. And yes they sound good too. They have a very nice, but subtle saturation, - like with real gear. My approach is some real gear in tracking, and to 90% Slate in mixing. It goes that far that I think about to sell my UAD Card I very seldom use it since I have the Slate everything bundle. UAD needs to show some innovation. Otherwise they will loose me as customer..... I need tools which help me to get my job done asap. I don't need exotic marketing gags, or high polished stupid videos.
