Picked up the flute after almost 20 years not playing it and was amazed at how strong muscle memory was doing warm ups and playing things by ear. Understanding sheet music again on the other hand has been very difficult, I can't believe it was even easy for me but it is so foreign now.
@flutechannel6 жыл бұрын
Well im happy your getting back into it. It'll take time. Grab some music and bring it on the couch or in bed and read it like you would a book. it gets your brain working and used to seeing the notes. I wish you all the best in your musical journey.

Interesting. I've not really practised chromatic scales so that's something for me to tackle. My own warm-up (self-devised) involves improvising a bit on (say) C, then again on F, then on Bb, and so on around the clock (cycle of 5ths). Usually based on the 1-2-5-1 pattern, e.g. C major, D dorian minor, G7, C, and so on in all the keys. With 12 keys to get round, this typically takes half an hour or more. (Obviously I play jazz rather than classical.)

Hi there, I love the video and I like your accent. I'm glad I watched this. I used to play flute along with my banjo more back in the day. However, now I'm slammed with all sorts of responsibilities. I want to have time to at least practice one of my instruments regularly, but it feels so demotivating when I get back to my flute it feels like I'm sucking up a long or something like that with the air, and I have a hard time. Anyways, I'll try this warm up suggestion. Five minutes isn't too much time, and if I combine that with 10-15 minutes of doing something I love each day on the flute than I could keep up with it. Maybe, I could post more audio and/or videos for my friends to be able to view online. Thanks, Tim C
@flutechannel6 жыл бұрын
You should do that. Alot of people do a 30daysofprcacticing video series. You can do 5 minute versions of this. I would recommend looking over the previous video and make one part of the warm up a bit better or let say "different" it will vary and progress you skill in time. Most importantly have Fun!
@Post-ModernCzechoslovakianWar6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply, I just went out busking today like I used to do more often. It was a good day, I got a decent amount even though I was only out for about an hour and about half the time I was talking to people I saw on the street I haven't seen in a long time. Anyways, one of the people who tipped me said he was first chair at his school band on Clarinet in the '90's. He appreciated my music enough to check it out, give a small tip, complement, and he gave a good word of encouragement. I think part of it is that I can be my own worse enemy. At the same time I know I have more to work on. In the end I think my skill level realistically is somewhere between my worst impressions of myself and what the people who really love my playing think. I'll keep practicing either way, and learn how to enjoy the journey. Thanks for the idea.
@flutechannel6 жыл бұрын
Im glad you went out and played! Busking can be fun! finding a irish band or a small reading group can help as well. It can be any instruments and you just jam, sight read and just have fun. Its a great thing to establish in your community and again its loads of fun! All the best and thanks for keeping me in touch!

so I am a high school player and I wanna be a music Major in college. But it takes me forever to warm up! Like at first I can’t play anything but low notes because if I try playing higher it comes out weird. It’s almost as if my lips have to get used to playing. But most flutist I know have no problem playing notes right off the bat and it’s frustrating.
@flutechannel7 жыл бұрын
trying warming up with harmonics more, play the exercise here in the harmonics section and repeat it. thats a good way to expand on it, try that first. But Will have a video diving a bit more into that. Your not the only one out there. Don't feel discouraged, keep practicing and have fun!

I was in a high school band. When the trumpet section blew "raspberries" with their trumpets at warm up I always did it to. It seemed to relax the muscles around my mouth so I could maneuver my lips. I also smiled and puckered my lips too. I hope that helps.

Warming up... Painful story. I was almost expulsed from my (music) school for that! We had a very poor sound insulation in our building and one day I was warming up early in the morning. And a teacher thought I was doing it on purpose (to annoy her during her lesson). So she took me to the principal........

If 5 minutes warm-up is a hurry warm-up, how long is the standard warm up?
@flutechannel7 жыл бұрын
it more about a well-rounded exercise instead of something maybe a bit more random. Some people need 5 minutes some people only feel comfortable after warming up for 30 minutes. So it varies.
