I very much appreciate that Barenboim is one of the few performers (another is Lang Lang) who draw attention to the gentle dissonances in the piece rather than trying to make them just softly dissolve into the harmony. It enhances the overall wistful effect of the piece dramatically.

i now understand why debussy was once titled as the 'monet of piano', his pieces are phrased so beautifully yet still robust and firm, it is beautiful how he can shape it using odd chords or phrasing/rhythms in his pieces which can complement other phrases in unimaginable ways. He is an impressionist of music.

My new favourite channel! Incredible content quality. I love to listen to these commentaries by someone with such a deep insight and vast experience. I also have two suggestions. *First - Liszt's transcriptions of Schubert's compositions and Beethoven's symphonies. I find it utterly fascinating how he managed to preserve all the textures and complexity while reducing it to a single instrument, though the most capable one. *Second - Charles Valentin Alkan. Why is he so much less known than Chopin or Liszt who lived in the very same time and his works are technically perhaps on even higher level.

I never really realized that the repeating melodic phrases featured different chords! You are right, I did get so much more out of that. Even though I have listened to this piece hundreds of times. I will listen to this piece with much more appreciation now.

Thank you so much for these beautiful jewels touching the heart and mind. I have just discovered this series and am so sorry there are not even more. Thank you Maestro for sharing your insights and your God given talent of changing notes into something magically called ...music!

The harmonic content of music is what most interests me as a songwriter and as a listener. Thank you for describing the superb beauty of Debussy’s harmonies.
