I loved the violin analogy because some of my acting students think they can take one or two acting classes and then will magically get offered the standard rich and famous contract from Netflix or other streaming platforms. Getting an agent is another fallacy that many new actors fall into that I'm glad you covered. As an acting coach - I'm constantly saying AMEN to your words of wisdom!

@@alybadradoumbouya3761 You should audition online for American shows and movies. It's really helpful to have a resume ready and an agent, but you don't have to. I would move to America first, that should probably be the first step. Don't be messy, have everything planned out. You mentioned you're a student, are you over eighteen? If so, moving to America would be the first step. If not, I'd send in online audition tapes. Getting a role won't be easy, so don't be discouraged, Let people in your life know about your dreams. If you get a part, they'll fly you out to the set in the US. Get an acting coach and work for it. Have the right mindset and take baby steps. Lots of love from Wisconsin, USA.

Whenever I feel like quitting and focusing on a boring 9-5 career, I watch your vids because you speak so kindly and offer such good information for us beginner actors. That third point was SUPER helpful to know. I haven’t done any auditions yet but I feel like out of nerves I would’ve abruptly ended my scene after my final scene just wanting it to be over with lol so thanks for this tip.

Since you mentioned not 'pretending' to do things on camera I thought I'd share the time I had to do a spit-take while self taping. I found it much harder than originally thought since I had to 1. Avoid hitting the camera with the mouthful of water I'd sipped. 2. Not choke on said mouthful of water 3. Not *laugh* while performing points 1. and 2. And lastly 4. Properly clean up the area after I was done. Didn't get the gig but did learn how to do a spit-take. Not sure if I should list that on the 'skills' section of my resume though 😉

Good tips! I like the one about making sure you have a moment before and after your audition and not just to start and finish abruptly.

Giving yourself an activity can help with this (kind of like an "independent activity" in an acting class). In it's simplest form it's just something to help get you focused before you begin the actual scene but it also helps with the expression within the scene. Even something as simple as putting on a tie or cleaning a table can add life to a scene because if your character is angry that's going to come out in *how* you clean the table. A perfect example: the scene from Raider of the Lost Ark where Indiana Jones first arrives at the bar in Napal and technically you could say that he has a "door' and she has an "activity". He has a problem; she's the only solution to his problem but she's doing something - watch HOW she does what she's doing when she says the line "Well say it again anyway!!!!".

I've been doing tiny steps since I started, and sometimes is hard to keep the rithm, but you have to stay focused in those small objectives to achieve the bigger goals. I have sixteen and it's difficult to imagine acting as a profession but I still believe in myself an so I try every day.

I really appreciated your discussion about not taking things too fast. True story here. My friend encouraged me to audition for a one act festival and I got a part!! *Buuut*, there really are some differences between acting on stage vs screen, lol. I thought I was going to run off stage screaming because I felt my first rehearsal was so bad, LOL!! I felt pretty discombobulated! However, the thought dawned on me that perhaps I should be making use of the training I’ve been getting from classes and your videos? :-p Anyhow, I am really enjoying this experience and have learned a lot about *patience*! Hey Kurt, I watched some of the most famous actors such as Steve Carell and many other actors that had auditions and they did not use props of any sort. I was taught that props are mainly used in commercial auditions and not for film. So your Insight was quite interesting. I was taught that those can be distractions. Where did you get your resources from?

Props can definitely be distractions when the actor is making the scene all about the props. Many beginner actors try to show off the prop in the audition when it isn't really necessary. Veteran actors know when and when not to use props and when they do, it is simply to add believability to the scene rather than to take attention away from the actor. For example, in most scenes where characters are eating and/or drinking, the actor doesn't really need to eat or drink in the audition because the scene is not about the food, it's about the conversation that's happening. However, if one character says "Here, have some lemonade" and then your character replies, "Ahhhh, that is some refreshing lemonade!". Well, it would look really dumb if you didn't actually take a drink of something before saying that line.

Yes. I was going to comment on this, but searched to see if anyone else happened to mention it. I've seen actors pulling a bunch of crap out of a backpack at auditions. That's a distraction. Bringing cups and stuff to an audition is generally not acceptable, but I can see where if the scene is about an actor dribbling water through out the scene....it would be an exception. However, even on a taped audition, if - for example - the actor starts of typing, then swivels around and the typewriter is out for the rest of the scene...do not bring in a typewriter. Anyway - Kurt, this is my first time seeing your channel/videos. Stage32 featured your video in an article. I think a video on props diving it could give you more content and be something you could like to from this video. Nice presentation...and congrats on Vendetta!

Well said, acting career is no different than any other careers. For example, an accountant, engineer, lawyer or banker or etc starts to work at a small firm before he decides to get into a large firm or strike out by their own while building a resume filled with working experience and this applies to acting too. Start small at small roles in a film then from there you work your way up and you have a record of roles you had on your resume..

Slow is smooth and smooth is fast. When I was still teaching martial arts I would have my students practice the moves slowly at first so they can master the form without getting injured first. Then once you have perfect form you will naturally notice that there's a certain rhythm to it and once you've found the rhythm you can speed that rhythm up. Now I teach a free acting class for disabled veterans (Meisner based) and the same principles still apply.
