There are many guitar books that have "House Of The Rising Sun" listed as a beginner song. The chord changes are way too fast for a beginner and the correct strumming is tricky even for an intermediate player. I'm glad to hear someone finally point that out.

If that is the first song you want to learn, then it is fine to take your time and learn it slowly to play it properly. Technically any song can be in a beginner book. As long as they clearly state to play it very slow with a metronome, then build up speed.

No wrist strumming promotes stiffness which is bad. It is best to remain as lose as possible with as little movement as possible which can include both wrist and arm movement. It is best to just focus on not holding any muscle tight and the movement feeling good.

The first song i ever learned in full was Outlaw State of Mind by Chris Stapleton. Not too hard to play, in my opinion, and a really great sounding song. For those beginners looking for a place to start, I say this is a good one. Midnight train to Memphis is also a good one.
@MrJahvah8 жыл бұрын
No offense, but I completely disagree w the first two. Especially # 2! Resting your palm on the guitar top will muffle the vibration of the sound board giving you a smaller sound and all around inhibit your movements. I used to like to touch the pick guard with my pinky when I pick but am doing away w that as well. And to a certain extant, yes you strum w the elbow, but the wrist is NOT off grounds. I've been doing it for 20 yrs and don't have issues. In fact, if your going for speed metal, all 'down strokes' (Master of Puppets) you do NOT want to use your elbow. Just learn how to hold your wrist properly and you'll have no problems. Peace!

Hey, Andy, I've been learning from you for a month now. Thanks for your lessions, you do it in an easy and slow way from which we can pick it up nicely. Nevertheless, got a one question. We cannot place our required fingers in some or let's say many chords at a time in strings. For ex, in G major, c major, D major, it goes slowly one by one. Is that a problem or we should learn to place fingers at a time? Doesn't it come with a time? If Andy doesn't reply, anyone here can, thanks in advance 🙂

I have to disagree with that last point. First of all, wonderwall and house of the rising sun are two of the easiest songs out there. Playing songs you know is the key thing that keeps people interested. I still get a buzz out of it 18 years later. So unless the songs are so ridiculously difficult that attempting them will confuse you, or set you back (I just can't see it - the worst that can happen is you give up trying that song because it's too hard), then go for it. You'll find out pretty quickly whether it's too hard for you or not. And in any case, the challenge is what improves people. There's no reason to pick up bad habits this way more than playing anything else. I just don't like the attitude of "don't even attempt" some songs. For some people, just playing the first chord of their favourite song - is enough to give them a kick and keep them interested. It's the only reason people learn guitar in the first place, and the only reason they keep playing. It doesn't have to be all boring stuff.
@Bucboy10018 жыл бұрын
For a beginner Wonderwall is much more difficult than you would think. Most can play the general idea of it, but the strumming pattern is a little tricky and not something that a beginner will master until later. In fact, many covers on KZbin have intermediate players who don't have the strumming pattern down. As a massive Oasis fan, I would know. And I completely agree that beginners should learn songs they like, because that's what keeps it interesting and is usually the reason they picked up a guitar in the first place. The same applied to me when I first started - I never tried to learn a nursery rhyme or scale. I bought an Oasis chord book and went to town.
@suryajha25717 жыл бұрын

@terrywhite35266 жыл бұрын
In reference to putting fingers down one at a time someone once told me to treat it like you were saving a goal .literally just go for it then if you need to alter the fingers slightly then you can do that. This helped me when I was learning.

Advising students to hold the wrist rigid, when playing rhythm, needs to be removed. Try playing The Beatles' 'All my Lovin'' with just the elbow. You won't be able to do it and you'll have an aching arm after trying.

I’m a bigger guy and some aches and pains so I can’t hold the angles without well being in pain. I hold a guitar more upright almost like a classical guitar to be able to stay relax. Is this OK or according to the video should I just quit? By the way I’m just kidding I’m not quitting I’ll just play the way I can.

If you listened to what he said, He didn't say that new players could NOT play them, he said you were not doing yourself any favours by not learning the basics first (and thus easier songs) learning the basics first will help you learn more difficult songs faster and efficiently, I'd like to see someone play snow (hey oh) by RHCP without learning proper picking, alternate picking, chords and chord changes, etc. That's the point he was trying to make.

Thank God i am watching this video before starting the guitar lessons... I am 31 years old and I want to learn nylon strings guitar so bad (at least basics) I want to play dust in the wind and a few Pete doherty song but I have a problem with my left hand. Everytime I push the fret my fingertip always touches the lower string so it makes a buzzy sound. I hope I will come over this.wish me good luck guys. Take care. Have a nice day and night and life

Thanks for the tip about chords and putting fingers down all at once. I was told to practice putting them down at the same time, but I couldn't get my fingers coordinated. I'll definitely be practicing with your tip in mind.

I have to disagree on the first one: I learnt to strum "from the wrist", i.e. by rotating the lower arm from someone who has studied classic guitar, and it gives me better control over the right hand movement than using my elbow. And I have *never* experienced carpal tunnel porblems because of it. Also, it allows for a much tighter grip on my lute guitar, which is a bitch to hold with its rounded body. #3: don't panic. That just comes with practise, without giving it any thought whatsoever. I know that's how it worked for me. And practise takes time. Don't try to rush what needs time.

any tips on how hard you gotta press the chords for an absolute beginner?
@epiccomputing1239 жыл бұрын
Ryuu Put your fingers on the fret board in the position of the note you want to play ad only push as hard as you need to. (Just use a bit of force(Enough to be able to hear the note as it's supposed to sound!)) :)

Ryuu Cool, keep going!! I used Andy's video when I wasn't sure how hard to press and it worked!
@LeonAllanDavis8 жыл бұрын
+Ryuu If your guitar is set up properly, and you place your fingertips in the correct position, you need not press hard at all. To determine if your guitar is set up properly, slip a quarter (25 cent coin) between a fret and the string. Anymore than a slight gap and things need to be adjusted. Take your guitar to your local guitar mechanic. Fingertip position is critical. Place your fingertip as close to the fret as possible. Not the fret closest to the head, but the fret closest to the body. Move your fingertip back and forth and pluck the string and you'll see what I mean. Beginners automatically use too much force anyway. Try slacking off. You'll get a better sound and your wrist muscles and fingertips will thank you.

5th mistake ,,as a beginner i just got a guitar a bout 5 months ago ,, it was a little frustrating ,the pain!!, which lesson to follow? the chords!!,and the lack of time. so i wanted to let go,,but i did not like the idea of that guitar being on the wall,,, SO I PICKED FEW SONGS I LIKE which was more fun ,,,ONE OF THEM WAS ABSOLUTELY HORROR (th mexican, babe ruth) which helped me the most,, and after a while i could play chords like it was nothing,,,and i am learning basic stuff but still trying advanced songs and it s going very well ,,

Take it with a grain of salt. The chords to House are basic chords & sound nice put together. They sound good half-assed fingerpicked or simply strummed. Who cares if the song you're playing isn't perfect artist rendition? If you're learning, jam out the chords with some passion.🎸
@pancake96564 жыл бұрын
The 2nd one is really helpful to know it makes it so you also use more than just one finger for picking the strings so it's faster and overall easier
