When you first start out you should learn song’s completely. The whole song. Then learn three or four all the way through. You want to be able to play something if you have a guitar in your hands if somebody asks for a song. Justin is good for this. He gives you songs that are like that and some quite tough. He’s a good teacher.

I am a finger style guitarist. I add bass lines and pick more than three or four strings at one time and place of strumming because sometimes too much strumming gets boring after a while. This is why I chose to be a finger style guitarist. That’s why it breaks the monotony of all of the strumming, although I do strum, but not quite as often as most guitar players do if you watch Chad Atkins, he hits a baseline and then hits three or four strings at the same time. This is what he does in the place of struming. I love being a solo instrumental guitarist. It’s not so boring. I’ve been playing like this since 1974. You’re are a good teacher better than most on KZbin. Thanks for your videos I really like them have a beautiful day.😁👍🏼❤️🎸😎

@richardcooper9167 Жыл бұрын
Something that helps with strumming is watching your hand in a mirror, placed in front of guitar, as you strum. Any reflective surface works, just so you can see the broad movement.
@danieli.92523 жыл бұрын
For many years I only strummed with the side of my thumb, because it is quieter than using a pick and I was embarrassed by how badly I played, so I wanted to keep the volume down. Over the past couple of years, with help from Justin and some other online lessons, I only strum with a pick. I have progressed from very thin picks to some that are quite a bit thicker, and I find the thicker picks more comfortable now. Thanks, Justin!
@alexv77453 жыл бұрын
@Live Free : Check out Justin’s lessons about in and out picking. The problem with very thin picks is that you are not “picking” but “brushing” the strings and when you do that with thicker picks you often get stuck between the strings. Hit the strings with a slight angle to hear the difference.
@danieli.92523 жыл бұрын
@Live Free Alex said it better then I can. For me, it just came about gradually. One thing that helps me is not holding the pick too tightly.
@alexv77453 жыл бұрын
@Live Free did you try the Dunlop Nylon Standard picks ? They have a very firm and nice grip. Great for strumming. For playing riffs and licks I recommend Dunlop Jazz III (normal or mini size, depends on your likes).
@alexv77453 жыл бұрын
@Live Free yes I did ! In the beginning the pick circled between my index and tumb. It made me feel clumsy until I changed to those Dunlop Nylons. Suddenly I had a decent control and later it actualy didn’t matter what kind of pick I play. In the end it comes to the right technique and a bit self-esteem. In a while you.ll learn to better control the pick and vary the tension with your fingers. You will be amazed how much more dynamics you can put in your strumming. Keep practicing, you can do it !

Something that's often overlooked in strumming is *_stopping_* the notes. It can be as important as starting them. To stop the notes in a barre chord just lift your fingers a bit. You can hit them while they're muted to give a funky sort of "groove" too. If you're playing chords with open strings in it you need to lay one of your hands down on the strings lightly to stop the notes. You'll see/hear this if you watch a professional closely doing a song with a funky feel.

7:00 I was so used to down strums when I started guitar that up strums felt very odd. But now it makes sense to have rhythm going with strumming and trying to keep as consistent as possible
@liveforeverluckymanej-2003 жыл бұрын
Listen to Justin, don't let your strumming hand stop, keep it moving all the time. It's hard at the beginning but it gets easier with practice. Don't rely on fixed strumming patterns, they don't work. Listen to the song with your own ears and play the song the way you think you hear it. This is hard for a beginner to do but with practice you will get there in the end. Thanks Justin for sharing your knowledge with the world.

This is best guitar lesson I’ve had in 40 years. Great advice I wish I’d had when I first tried to learn guitar. It would have saved me countless hours unlearning really bad habits. I really wanted to learn finger style because I can’t sing to save my life but I loved the sound of the guitar. However, now decades later I definitely realize my journey would have been far easier had I’d first learned to strum properly and develop the sense of rhythm.

Finger style guitar us do it differently. We hit the bass lines and then hit three or four notes at the same time. It gives the rhythm some character I strum sometimes but not all the time because it gets boring but after 50 years of playing a guitar and spending, about 40 years in reading music and chord charts it’s really paid off I can play just about anything I want now even Chad Atkins pieces he was my idol guitarist soul surfer back in 64 Johnny Fortune was my guitar teacher was my best friend for 30 years taught me a lot about guitar playing Passed away in 2006. Almost any one will do as to your level, and follow DVD after DVD, in sequence, follow the lessons in sequence, 1, 2, 3, relax and let the instructor move you along from exercise to exercise. Before you know it , you will have completed the course without rushing. That's my suggestion. Good luck.

I am glad he addressed pick vs no pick, ideal pick thickness for a beginner, and using a light touch. I also learned from the wrong strumming examples. Seems the best route to go is practice the most common strumming pattern D, DU, &U, D until it becomes natural. Maybe using a phone metronome app is a good idea too. He says we are inborn with rhythm, but I think some of us have to work on it a bit, or a lot 😁.

I remember what finally got my strumming going properly and that was putting the electric guitar, amps & pedals away for a good 6 months and playing strictly acoustic guitars. You quickly learn how important it is to keep that strumming hand going all the time because acoustic guitars simply don't keep ringing if you aren't strumming whereas on an electric guitar, you can keep a note or chord ringing forever if you want.

One thing that improved my playing almost instantly was using low tension strings. I get Newtone ones. They remove the element of having to press down so hard. And sound brilliant. They take away one element and that frees you up to do other things like singing. I'm not selling them, but anyone l have asked to get them were amazed how easy playing became. What ever helps in my opinion. Your fingers will thank you. Just have to practice the same. They go out of tune alot till they bed in.

I also teach and you are telling people exactly all the things I tell them. Thrilling - I must be doing something right. Great tutorials, mate! Thnx
When I was younger my mates in school all took music and showed me some chords on the guitar. I've always wanted to play since then but my strumming has always sucked so I never bothered trying to learn. I thought it may be cuz I'm left handed but I've always held a guitar right handed for some reason. I've tried left handed guitars since but they feel even stranger. I'm now 40 and finally brought my first guitar determined to finally learn. I find when I strum the pick twists in my fingers and also my hand wanders closer and further from the strings. Sometimes I miss the strings completely and other times I hit the thick strings so hard it bounces my hand away and I miss the lighter strings on the down stroke. I guess it's just practice, practice. I know loads of chords now but my strumming holds me back that much I can't play a single song from beginning to end just bits of songs 😁

Turning wrist or up/down arm? Which one is more effective? I played guitar when I was student and play until now with turning wrist when playing such rhythmic pattern (I played later piano and synthe so not very good at guitar). Sort of learned this strange flowing strum style long before nailing the consistent strumming it seems you're supposed to start with. I use my wrist a lot... I can play A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall as it sounds in the record version so that's good enough for me lol Edit: Nice. Dancing with the guitar makes the consistent strumming really good. I don't know if this helps but think of leg tapping like a metronome which you can feel. So get a metronome, tap your leg to it, then do your strum pattern, you might not be able to hear the metronome but you will be able to feel your feet.
