Kind of tired of makers who use the excuse of mental health for their lack of production. I get it, a week or two for doing nothing but taking care of yourself, fine. But years? Come on. This lack of communication has happened to nearly all my friends at this point with fursuit makers and furry artists alike, and they run off with the money. I'm absolutely done with the excuse, but if it's good intention and they are kind I'm okay. Just work with your commissioner, people. DO YOUR WORK.

I love to listen these videos while making suits, since they help a lot- even though i know i will never be full blown maker (i can't handle taking many commissions and not having free time often) but i will take few commissions here an there, and focusing on communicating is a big passion of mine, especially now that i'm not so anxious and sad all the time, which prevented me from making progress, and talking to my customer. I'm glad that my first customer was very understanding of my mental state, and well, i tried my best to send wips and ask if everything is alright with the suit, and the whole experience just made me realise that people will appreciate you, if you're at least putting effort and trying to communicate. At least most of the people. (Also i just have to say, thank you Elk Dragon for making videos, I've binged through them and learnt a lot, ofc i do watch other's too, since i probably use half of my time researching new stuff, but your videos have been very, very helpful!)

The anxiety problems... ahhh I get so anxious with people, and I’ve noticed people are very impatient. Also, I’ve only been making for about a year and a half, and other than my first suit, I’ve always used the best materials I can. It makes the quality of my suits look 10 times better! ^^

Thank you for mentioning anxiety as being one of the reasons fursuit makers might not communicate much. I don't do fursuits (yet, planning to) but I used to do art commissions and one of my biggest problems was not talking a lot because I was too scared of the person commissioning me ^^' I think I've gotten a bit better (Though I haven't taken commissions in a while, so that past practice might've faded away by now) but yeah, customers who are nice are a lot easier to deal with :D ... Also your hands paws are mesmerising x)

I personally make the process SUPER transparent and show them where I get the materials from, what I am buying, and what I am making for them. Every step they get to see because, hey, they’re paying for it. I send work in progress photos and if anything is even remotely muddy with design or look what have you, I ask a clarifying question.

I'm late here, but it really depends on the species and character. If the character has medium to long fur, you're gonna want faux fur, but if it's got short or very short fur, sometimes you can pull it off using fleece. Though still not recommended unless the character is just fuzzy like fleece is (not furry).

Oh jeez... I'm only on number 5 and boy oh boy you gave me some _baaaad_ memories! I decided to use some cheap fur when I was making my first suit because I predicted it wouldn't be great anyway so waste a bunch of money, y'know? I bought some short pile fur from Joanne's and goddamn... It was so patchy and garbage you could literally see the green foam through the white fur... which was literally the whole front half his face. I don't think he wouldn't have been topnotch incredible if I had used high quality materials, but at least he wouldn't look like a monster that got hit by car, backed over, and run over again. He lives in my closet now so I never have to see him again. :/ Don't underestimate yourselves, kids. Use good materials and get good results. Don't assume your first try will be awful, or else it will be.
@masonkoeppen12494 жыл бұрын
Well it's fine that your first suit was trash, most people's are. That's why it's good to use cheap materials when you first start so when it turns out bad you haven't lost too much money once you've gotten better you can move one to better materials.

i've seen people use conductive thread kind of... pressed into the tip of a (hollowed) sculpted claw, with more inside the finger itself to make a connection, but i'm not sure how well it works. you'd probably be better off just making hidden holes to stick your fingers or whole hand out of.

I went to the uphostery section of a local fabric store. Most foams are pretty good, it depends on what you need. I use low and medium density, but some makers swear by high density. I personally find the lower density stuff easier to pack since it squishes down, but some characters need the stiff look.

I had a Other Problem by Fursuitmaking with a maker: when I commissioned my Dutchie who is not a Dutchie Anymore, the Maker had already made up a base for him. she already builded a Base before on Hold because she had many other Dutchies in Commission, but the others, dont had the Quality and where worse than the new one . But in the Planning, she said I would not use this base, (the new one) I would use it by my friend. you can have Instead have this one. So I got a Headbase who looks bader then that, what it was supposed to be for me. And its really really reaaaaally Soft and falls appart with every wearing. in my Opponion is this also a Big Suitmaking Mistake.

Yes ik I'm late I get it qwq but as a young fursuit maker who has cheap parents, I can agree with getting higher quality materials, (especially with selling) but I do have reservations. As you have said they are not always super expensive, but as a person who has cheap parents I had gotten yelled at for spending more than 100 dollars on the cheap lower quality stuff, especially fur. As I don't completely trust Amazon especially with the parents I have, who are older and cannot tell what the good stuff is.(side tangent incoming) like with my first try of fursuit which I had no idea of what to do I didn't even have fir but my parents had bought it for me since it was the first thing that was shown on Amazon for the cheapest price. So yes I do believe if you are setting high prices for your product you should use high quality materials, but If you are just starting out and you are young with absolutely no money the cheaper options might be better. Just saying as young fur with cheaper parents I don't want to feel bad for only selling one fursuit to a close friend made with craft fur.(and yes it holds together fine.)

I agree with you on your third point, I however ran into the problem where my maker had girlfriends that took over for her while she was super sick and both of them where very very bad at communicating. Like I mean I would be like “Hey how is everything going just checking in” very nicely (They were my friends at some point) and I would not hear from them for weeks maybe even months and I sadly had to get to the point where I was wanting the money back because I got nothing from them other then a tail (That does not fit even for trying to use a partial) and hand paws. I never wanted to get aggressive with them it sadly had to be done
