another pro of resin bases is that mechanisms like moving jaws are way easier to make and will often come out more precise, because making a joint on a hard material is just not as frustrating as making one on a soft and squishy one on resin claws, if youre planning on having a cute toony suits, sewn claws might just be the better option for you, especially if youre planning on having contact with little children. dont want to poke lil timmys eye out, do you? if youre looking for a more realistoc or semi realistic style, resin claws are your best option because, well, they are just more realistic than sewn ones.

The maker of my suit said it took her almost a full month to fully create her look, and it wasn't even a ref or anything like that. She came up with the design from her own imagination

A reason why realistic suits use resin bases is because resin is a LOT smaller than foam heads. :3

That is a very informative video on fursuit materials. Also I may add that sculpy is another material used to make teeth and claws in some suits like Bruzo ones. But usually comes in a block that can be sculpted into whatever shape or boney part you want to make of it. And when baked, it sorta have this plastic resins sort of texture.
@travissmith28486 жыл бұрын
Re: paws. I'm surprised some form of pleather, artificial leather, is not more common for pads. Animal product free (usually) pliable and skin like texture, it should provide a good middle ground between durability, flexibility, and grip. With slightly longer claws if blunted I could see having one that has a removable tip designed to accept screw in tips from a phone/tablet stylus.
@maximillianlylat15896 жыл бұрын
From my experience with pleather from purses, pleather cant seem to take alot of ware and tear and when it falls apart it looks bad.
@travissmith28486 жыл бұрын
Fair enough, though there should be some material that can be found to offer both reasonable durability and grip. Hmmmm....... you could paint rounds of some material in tool handle latex and texture it. Many colors, reasonably durable, could be patched if needed.... and on the pads themselves should be relatively free from flexing.

One thing I noticed for claws is some people use oven baked clay to make them. I don't know much about that method but I believe it's about the same as resin based accessories. And foam heads are the softest, most comfortable materials. Made my partial suit head with foam and it was super fun to make.

personally my favorites are 3d printed bases. they have the structure and mold prevention of a resin head, but tend to be covered in small holes that allow for great ventilation like a foam head (sometimes even better depending on the base). plus, they're pretty simple to make if you have everything you need.
@seratheeducatedfeline42274 жыл бұрын
I actually used organza (a very sheer fabric) on my first suit’s eyes. It has better visibility than painted buckram, but because I could only really use it on my character’s slitted pupils, my visual field is smaller. I’d say it’s a good option for characters with single-coloured eyes or even the tear ducts of a realistic suit (though it’s a bit of a pain to glue due to the smoothness of the material.
@icantthinkofaname22994 жыл бұрын
So, I have a maskimals head (which I know most of the fandom doesn’t care for, also it’s the brown dog one), but I made some changes. I cut out the eyes and replaced it with the backs of paper plates (which I colored pupils on and were hot glued in) and I also added more details, like green eyebrows, tongue, and mouth. It actually looks pretty good for a starter. I’m going to make another one of the tuxedo cat (I have another fursona named Violet) and edit that one too. :D (And if you’re wondering, yes, I can see through it. The plates have small holes I made in them to help me see)

There are 3D printed head base that I'm using to build my first fursuit. The one I got differs from other resin heads is that it was 3D sculpted and so it has holes in in to let air flow, save weight and reduce cost. I got the head base from Fuzzbuttfursuits.com their also on FA.

Just a small correction; minky is a plush fabric used for tongues, noses, etc. Mink faux fur however, is a dense medium pile faux fur, used for similar things like lux shag. As for feet the rubber part of feet people usually use EVA foam, hard silocone or sometimes rubber mats.

Bad fursuit idea: the only orifice is the maw, the eyes are cameras ans the suiter has a H.U.D. to see outside because the suit also has cooling fans the eyes copy the suiter's eye movements using eyetracker, the mouth is directly linked to the suiter's mouth ans replicates the heat of a human body keeping a constant 37°C for realism, the ears are actual hearing devices.

What about Nylon thread? I’ve heard it’s really hard to rip and tear. Is it used for fur suit thread lining? Also, I have another question/possible video request/suggestion. Some fur suits have limited flexibility and mobility and others are so flexible and durable that the fursuiter can run, dance, do flips, cartwheels, even extreme sports stuff like skydiving and skiing, and a bunch of other highly active activities and their fursuits don’t rip or damage too often. How do they make the suits more flexible durable and mobile?

Very well done video Stormi! I'm sure this will be both helpful to both commissioners and new suit makers alike as this was very informative and well put together! Also, that little planvas text, and the blue is not red text were nice touches too. Also, I really liked the editing, and at that one part where the screen shook along with your head. I also think that doing actual fursuit making as a follow up to this with Treble is a great idea! Keep up the great work as always, and I hope you have a great day Stormi! :)

Two main things you missed are hot glue and duct tape. Hot glue is needed not only to glue together your head base but also to glue down the fur (hot glue won't melt the foam or fur don't worry). Duct tape is used to pattern parts of the suit. I've heard of people using fleece to pattern their stuff but that's kinda expensive and a little bit of a waste of good materials to me.

1. fur (duh) 2. Mesh or buckram (eyes) + thin foam 3. Memory foam or resin (for head base) 4. Balaclava (to prevent sweat in head) 5. Foam padding or poly fill (for stuffing) 6. Threading (upholstery thread) 7. Zippers or velcro (to get in and out of your suit or for detachable stuff like hair, tongue, ect) 8. Peet material (for bottom of feet) 9. Fleece or vinyl (for paw pads) 10. Fleece or resin (for claws) 11. Wire (for ears, tail, horns, wings, ect) 12. This wasnt mentioned in the video but also magnets (for detachable stuff (make sure they are very strong ones))

First time fursuit maker here, but, have you heard of things like Thermomorph and Worbla being used? I know those are used in the cosplay world, and I was thinking of making claws and teeth out of Thermomorph. It's really strong stuff, but it softens into a clear goo when it gets put in hot water, then resolidifies again when cooled into a white, hard-ish plastic that strongly resists shattering. The downside is it can be somewhat difficult to shape how you want it.
