I also had an overwhelming sense of "not being enough" when I started as a business analyst also, being around already by subject matter experts that knew so much more than I did. But what helped me overcome it was my decision to learn as fast as possible. Spending extra time outside of the work hours to catch up. When you know just as much as the SMEs, they will acknowledge you and your struggle and accept you as a fellow SME. Never stop learning, the goal can be to always be jist as a good as the best SME, or even better

@@teekanne15 Here is where you have to make a decision. if you never make an effort to get up to speed, you will continue to struggle to meet the minimum requirements to keep your job. Work life balance is important but making excuses to avoid doing actual work is another topic. You will need to figure out whether you need to find a new employer but making up reasons for never trying is not healthy for a career

@@teekanne15 Precisely, I find it almost impossible to give up my self for a faceless, nameless coroporation that exploits everyone alive in every legal (and illegal) way possible. I am pro-capitalist, I just cannot fucking stand modern corporations and the cult-like attitude they inspire.

@@happyhero1093 I'm an introvert and having to engage with people is very draining and mentally exhausting. Plus when you sit in meetings you realize what a waste of time most can be, like an email would've been sufficient. There are just so many reasons for not wanting to sit in meetings, but main one is definitely my anxiety of being around people. As far sharing somethings: being a BA is not very difficult, all it takes is listening to people talk and get their requirements out. So long as you can understand them and write that is layman's terms for others, you've done your job. There are all these terms and tools out there making it sound all that complicated, but trust me it is NOT.

Actually pretty solid advice. You need to talk to EVERYONE and multiple times because people change their minds like that. Rookie mistake is to think that step 1, i.e. identifying the needs, is easy or already determined for you by the customer/owner/boss. Not so haha you have to play psychologist and pick apart people's minds to find out what they really want and what work they're willing to do for it. You have to be the adult in the room making sure that the toddler really wants this candy rather than that candy and if it needs to pee or not.

I had severe imposter syndrome at my first corporate career when I was 26 in 2015. Now at 34 in 2023, imposter syndrome is still in the back of my mind, but you just have to fight through it. Practicing extensively for the interview and practicing asking the PROPER questions with friends definitely helps eliminate imposter syndrome. At the interviews and during the first month on the job, having extra self confidence and just know that most people are winging it, helped.

Hiya! fab video! I can really relate to many of these! From my own experience, i would add that for point 4 (the end user knowing what they want), iIve found that in many organisations, the customer may know what they want at a very high level, but what the actual end product looks like, or indeed if they even need it at all, is a different question (or assumption!) altogether :) PS. love the tree diagram, great analogy!!

Awesome video as most of the people do not talk about the challenges and issues face by Business Analyst in day to day . . . the common issue with me is to deal with the different prople mindset , like to deal with the Technical people is different then the Managers or Customer ( end user) and when you have common issues with the reports or documents or conflicts between people from different departments then BA is the one who listening to both ends . . this job is more like people dealing rather technical . . Second to build relationship with people and another skillset which is difficult because sometimes people comes from different background and learnings, so as an immigrant it is very hard to get along with different people because you have to excel in the company, and also it happens a lot when you dont like or agree someone's point of view, and the last thing is anything goes wrong in the process you are the first person to blame to because BA is totally Undefine Domain. I would the person who politically strong can survive in this kind of Role. BA is not for everyone

Hey Ginni! I've definitely been in your shoes before so I just want to say that it's not YOU - this happens to all of us. I personally think I got rejected to 75 different intern applications (rejections or never heard back) and then got 5 interview and only got 1 offer when I was in college looking for paid internship opportunity. I kept track of all the companies and the positions I applied for in an excel until I landed my paid internship position lol I think the important thing is you have to take inventory of what kind of skill sets and experience you have and try to build up. Maybe you won't get responses for your dream jobs right away, but you might need to start with volunteering and then internships in the same industry to get your foot in the door. I know a lot of people who started off their careers with smaller companies to build their resume. Here is a video that talks about some of the steps you should consider when applying for your next job! Hope this helps :) kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZnrIq4WEZ5uVprs

I'm glad I can help with building your confidence. Your comments made me think of a recent HBR podcast that I listened to: hbr.org/ideacast/2019/12/the-tipping-point-between-failure-and-success The bottom line is that research discovered people who experience early failures often become more accomplished than counterparts who achieve early successes. Also, you need to get someone else's opinion on your resume and make some changes as well. Also, try to leverage information coffees or networking groups to meet new people so you can expand your network! I got more rejections from landing my first co op job as a student than the ones I heard back from - so don't be afraid of failures or rejections. Keep applying and thinking of different ways you can improve your chance of hearing back from the recruiters :) hope this helps!

Hi there, I am a recent graduate. I came across your amazing video as I am preparing for a BA interview in a finance company. I have a background in data analytics thus don't really have too much knowledge in finance. As you mentioned in your other video, BA needs to understand both business and technical sides of the company. I have been doing a lot of research lately about things like how does the company work, who are its customers, how does it make money etc. However, the more research I do, the more I realize I don't know. And since English is not my first language, it is even harder for me since I need to understand the concept first, then translating them into English. I am freaking out a little and even thought about cancelling the interview. Do you have any suggestions? Again, thanks for posting this video and sharing your experiences!
@RichMillennialMindset
@RichMillennialMindset 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Sara! You don't have to understand the business even before you get hired! You will learn how the business works and more about the company within the first year after you get hired. It sounds like you're putting too much pressure on yourself. So do not put too much pressure on yourself and stop doing too much research! It can definitely backfire. What I do for interview prep is the following: 1. Pull out your job description for this company 2. Do research on the company on their website as much as you can - do sufficient research so that you have a good understanding but you don't have to know everything. You can also use Glassdoor to see what the company culture looks like. 3. Pull out your resume - highlight any skill sets that are mentioned in the job description 4. Think about your past experience and what you can bring to the table by matching up your skill sets on your resume against the job description you've applied for. If it says analytical skill sets - think about how you demonstrated this in your previous company 5. Create a list of interview practice questions - you can search online if you can't think of any. It always begins with 'Tell me about yourself'. 6. Brainstorm answers for each practice interview question 7. Practice it with your siblings or family or you can record yourself - I know that recording your own voice can be nerve wrecking but English is my second language as well and it really helped me to correct my pronunciation and to pause in between so that I wasn't just rambling on. 8. (optional if you have time) If you know who is going to interview you, you can do quick LinkedIn search to see what they're like - to see what kind of past experience or which industry they worked in so that you can see if you have similarities that they can relate to (maybe both you and your interviewer have similar hobbies such as hiking, volunteering at organizations, etc. so that you can incorporate this into your 'tell me about yourself' or if you notice that you've both worked in the same industry before, and if the interviewer asks you why you want to transition into Finance industry, you can say that you like to fast paced work environment where there are opportunities for growth and learning etc. compared to oil and gas industry which you've worked previously, etc.) 9. Don't forget to smile and be confident! The fact that you're being interviewed means that you are already enough and have skill sets to do the job. They would've never scheduled an interview if they didn't think so. Believe in yourself! You're enough. I really hope that you won't cancel the interview! Even if you don't get this job, it will be a great learning opportunity for growth. I got rejected for far too many jobs in the past I can't even keep track of how many, but each time I learned something new and it seemed less scary after doing so many interviews!

I think you have explained very well here. i am currently in your position. i am afraid of asking questions sometimes those r the valid ones i prefer to send them mail after meeting or texting them in person. Being BA i know this is not good. Can you help me to understand how to start a requirement gathering process. i mean how to initiate the process - easy steps

Sure the customer don't know how to translate the idea .. that's why they bring us .. and they're expecting that you telling them this is wrong and this is the way how to think 🤔 before you think about your weakness you have to think about the customer who brings you to help finding the solution 🙂 so we are fine to be strong business consultant.. 👍

You don’t. Little bit of SQL and tableau I understand but knowing python I think what you’re describing is more of a data analyst. This is why the job title don’t mean shit cause you will need to read the job description.

1. Yes you can become BA after studying finance - I'd suggest studying business administration would be beneficial. 2. Are you asking if BAs can work abroad? Can you please clarify? 3. You will need to apply for BA positions or find transitional roles that can help you land jobs as BA.

You’re saying great and important things for people but just because you happened to be a business analyst when going through these does not justify the title. These are general things to understand, learn and overcome for any office job or almost any job where social interaction is needed. So I’d say title is misleading.
