Modifying Vise Grips to do a specific task is simple and easy. They lend themselves to being used in many ways other than their intended use. Modify a pair of your old ones and buy a new pair to replace them. There are at least two of these shown that you should have in your shop.

Thank you for sharing!! I love the picking idea for the large vice grips. I'm going to have to make a set of them. Also I will keep the idea of the forming vice grips in the back of my head for future use I'm sure it will come in handy in the near future!

Hi Phil. I am starting on a video on how to make the chisel holding Vise Grips. I got the most comments on those. It should be up at the end of the week. Get some 1/4 X 3/4 bar stock and follow along. When you make the pick style pliers be sure to get rid of the slop in the bottom jaw. The accuracy of the strike depends on this. A few raps with a hammer on the flange will do the trick. I'm glad you found some use full info in this video. Jere

Great ideas, thanks Jere! I have several modded vise grips. I buy old ones out of garage sales just for modding. My fav is small one I cut off the jaws and welded 6” long 1/4” key stock to mount chain guard backing plates in making conveyors. Not strong but one of those jobs where you need 3 hands where there’s no clearance for a standard clamp.

That is so smart to do. Very practical. Once I modified a vise grip with 2 offset plates to bevel a flange but I like the chisel holder. I'm tired of hitting my hand. I bruse to much now!

Nice modifications, thanks for sharing,…I have drilled/tapped the adjuster bolt for the thread of my slide hammer, vise grip grabs and the slide hammer bests/pulls

The large straight jaw inline with the adjuster vice grip )--- vs standard jaws offset 45° are the same thread of at least one slide hammer rod. Then you get straight pulls.

Quite a gripping topic! I modified some 3 3/4 ish [ ] knockoff vice grip welding pliers, and man those junk imports cam over locks failed to actually lock after not much use. Never had any of my real vice grips lock down then immediately pop open like that... They tend to clamp like a pitbull.

Hi Wolf. If you file or grind the place where the pivot arm hits the stop it will allow the center pivot point to go past the two outer pivot points and stay locked. I use one of my old Vise Grips for the mod and go right out and buy a new one. That way I keep new clamps rotating through my collection. Thanks for watching. Jere

@@jerekirkpatrick2092 that is a great idea, and was in plain sight like a rattlesnake.. Once you grind and weld, what is a little more grinder modification going to hurt. I found an old vise grip on the ground today that will be a punch holder soon.

I need to put/ punch a slotted holes in a fender flange where it bolts to the body. It fastens to a hidden caged nut on 30’s GM car. Trying not to drill and file slot by hand Any ideas. I only have hand tools

Kurt. You can get a hand nibbler (from McMaster Carr) and make your slotted holes. You can also clamp a piece of bar stock behind the panel (where you have drilled 2 holes the length of the slot) and use a chisel to cut out the offending portion. A few swipes with a file and your done. I hope this helps. Jere
