Hello, its December 31, 2019. I started the $5 dollar challenge last January. It was very hard to not spend that money, but was super disciplined. So proud to say I saved over 3 grand this year. and going to put it down on my mortgage, principal, and get it down. My goal for 2020, is pay off my mortgage! Happy New Year!!!!

Yea the no spend months would only work if I cut out ONE thing. For me, that’s shopping for clothes. With my last job I used to shop for clothes and shoes every weekend and wasn’t budgeting and my money was gone by payday. Now, with my new job position I’ve held for the past couple of months I hardly shop for clothes. I did once for a vacation/cruise in October to go to Asia but since then I haven’t shopped again. I feel like I have the essentials that I need. another good money saving challenge I wanna try is since I get paid every Friday I would save the amount of what date payday falls on. So if it’s Friday and it’s the “13th” or 25th” I would save $13 or $25.

I have 2 really great savings techniques! 1. Every time you find yourself putting something you dont need in your cart online or driving by sonic and you crave a cherry limeade and some mozz sticks, transfer that amount to savings instead of spending on junk. 2. Log into your internet banking and say your balance in checking is $563.24... go ahead and transfer the 3.24 to savings. I promise you won't miss it.

I have been doing a savings plan, where I save 100 notes of every money denomination. So 100 notes of the ones, 100 notes of the fives and so on. By the time you do hundred of each denomination you'll wind up with $18,600. I just started and all I have so far is 100 notes of the ones, and 100 notes of the Fives, 100 notes of the tens, and started with 25 of the twenties. It'll take another 3 months to complete the twenties as I only make 500 a month. Then once I accumulated 100 notes of a particular denomination, I'll put a money label around it. Can't wait to save. It's addictive.

I'm currently doing the same $1,000 in 12 weeks Challenge and it is really pushing me to be more thoughtful and figure it out more ways to make side money so currently I'm really enjoying it because I didn't think I was able to do it on my budget but it seems to be working. As far as the no spend month I still do them sometimes but not as restrictive as most people are because you are right you do end up wanting to buy all this food all this stuff when you're done because you feel like you needed things that you didn't get them while you were in your no spend month so I would never unsubscribe from you because you said that and it's your opinion that 🤑🤑🤑

I think the no spend months are great for those that aren't huge spenders. It's easier to do a no spend month when you don't spend a lot on average to begin with. I think it is much harder for those that love their starbucks and fast food everyday and have trouble staying out of the malls. But if your pretty conservative with your money, then a no spend month can work really well because you don't feel like you are depriving yourself and end up on a shopping spree the first day of the next month.
@Monique03225 жыл бұрын
@@vickieclark5931 a no spend month is for me because I am a spender. It's not something that I could do right away. I had to practice. Just like budgeting. Your budget is not perfect when you start, but at least you put in the effort.

What I have been doing is cashing out any money leftover in my grocery budget at the end of the month and throwing that cash into an envelope. It challenges me to see what all I can do to lower our grocery costs and see if I can save more than I did the month before. Sometimes it's just $10 because I try not to over budget just to have extra money at the end of the month. It's just my normal budget amount. I got over $100 in three months time.

Great ideas Kelly. I'm definitely going to try some of those - and bonus on the weather one is that it's WINTER, so the numbers don't feel as scary. I agree with you on no spend months - I've never been able to make a no spend week/fortnight/month work for me - I find I have more success if I commit to conscious/mindful spending. Keeping in mind in New Zealand we have $1 & $2 coins not notes - these two coins are gold coloured. In the past, when I've commited to emptying all non-gold coins (eg 10c, 20c, 50c) into a jar/container each day, I've been surprised how quickly it added up - I think it was little over $60 in 3 months one time I did it. Another savings tip/challenge that I hear people talk about being good that I've never been able to make work for me is the 52 week savings challenge (forwards or backwards) the gist is in week 1 you put aside $1, week 2 $2, week 3 $3 and so on, so by the last week of the year you are putting aside $52 - some do it in reverse (and start with $52 in week 1), especially if they are starting in January so they aren't trying to find the larger amounts while handling Christmas. I love the concept behind it, but it's never worked for me.

🤑 I do a modified version of No Spend month. I have a running list of things I need/want. I will list our 3-5 things from that list during my no spend month. With a twist... If I have a scrapbook event coming up and I need refill adhesive, I will only buy it if it’s 40%off or higher. Same thing with other items. That way it’s not as restricting and I still save!
@freedominabudget5 жыл бұрын
That's an awesome way to make the challenge doable for you!! Great job, Kimberly!! :)

I think no spend challenge is not something you should do normally, but for a very special reason. For example, you have an emergent need you have to meet in a limited time, then that would justify the sacrifice. Normal savings challenges should be fun and doable to be effective. I do believe no spend does have a place for extreme scenarios when there is an urgency snd no savings to meet them.

I've never heard of the $5 challenge until this video, but it does seem like a great way to save some big bucks. I save change and take it to the bank every 2-3 months and that adds up, but $5? That would pay for Christmas or a vacation by the end of the year. Not to mention it's not enough money to really miss that badly so it would not be too hard of a challenge that could add up to thousands of dollars. I may give that a try. :)

Hi Stacy, I understand what you mean too. There are some channels I like that might be more in line with your situation. The Fundamental Home - videos about feeding your family on very little, as well as some thrift store shopping. Esp check out some of the earlier videos - Amanda (the women who makes the videos) was feeding her family of 5 on $100 per month. kzbin.info/door/o0EqbzxI9YYQnuUXTiEisw 1mom2girls2boys8inall - A single mother of 4 children, Shakema, who also works full time and how she feeds her family and budgets. kzbin.info/door/4lCxhP-lKnKkeorSF1-neQ?view_as=subscriber You might also want to look at some of Kelly's Freedom in a Budget older videos, before she got married, when she was living on a single income and paying off debt. Back then her budgets were much smaller and you might relate more too them (I find myself going back and watching the older videos more). I pray you will find a way out and be able to improve your financial situation.

Some great challenges there. My husband and I do have no spend monthly challenges. It works for us. We are both 60yrs old and have no debt apart from our mortgage. We particularly like this challenge as we can donate our savings for the month to something that is near and dear to our hearts. For me it is the Arrow Bone Marrow Foundation. We live in Australia. That foundation helped myself and late husband when he was diagnosed with NHL. For my husband it is the RSPCA (animal shelter) he has a passion for helping domestic animals. Works for us but I can see how others would spend up big after a month of restraint.

How would the $5 challenge work since a lot of people use cards now?
@freedominabudget5 жыл бұрын
I honestly think that this challenge would only work with cash.
@cathgriffits21495 жыл бұрын
Maybe when you spend on a card, you put any $5 change from if you had paid cash ... ie $34 save $5, $38 save nothing. :) would take discipline to do the transfer every purchase.
@tarns175 жыл бұрын
Maybe (and I think I might try this myself), set up a seperate account - my bank allows me to have sub-accounts off of my main account - and for every purchase you make, transfer an extra $5 into that account - or, and this isn't strictly $5 but round up every purchase eg. if the purchase was $22, transfer either $3 (for $25 roundup) or $8 (for $30 roundup) into that account. It wouldnt take much to sit down at the end of a day/or week you've spent money, to take out your receipts and transfer the amount.
@Brittanylee51043 жыл бұрын
