I understand the qualities of vinyl. I have a very good vinyl rig and I might play it 5 percent of the time. Digital has come so far and sounds so good vinyl is just not worth the hassle any more.

Biggest factor is the quality and style of music you listen to. If it’s a lot of electro-pop that I hear Jay play, honestly streaming is going to be fine. With very few exceptions, pop music from last 40 years is so poorly recorded and mixed, it may sound better from a streaming source. That’s not to say ALL recorded music of last 40 years is poorly recorded, there’s some absolutely brilliant recordings in that timeframe, just most are not pop genre. If pop is your jam, be you and enjoy your streaming👍. We only play digital, and still no streaming but rather sourced from a NAS, when entertaining large parties of 15+ persons. That accounts for less than 5% of listening on main living room system. I have no digital equipment in my library system. I play probably 60% from my r2r, an Ampex ATR 102 and Manley head preamp in our main system. In my library I have a Nagra IV-S. I have turntables for both systems, they consume balance of my source material. I have at last count over 4000 records and 1200+ tapes. The only digital sampling I do to listen for new music is in my car. Vast majority of my music is blues, jazz and opera, with small % of symphony and 60-70’s rock. That music genre is extraordinarily poor comparing digital/streaming to my analog sources. Getting out of my chair every 45 minutes to swap tapes, 20-25 minutes to flip records, is good for my health and my soul. The audible fatigue of listening to digital presentation would have me leaving room or turning off system after 30 minutes. My tape and vinyl recordings keeps me engaged with music and wanting to hear more. Different strokes for different folks but me being converted to streaming fan is unlikely to ever occur.

Glad your keeping your turntable 😁 in this day where digital seems to be the way to go, not for me turntable is the way to go, we hear in analogue and to me regardless of how much a dac etc costs something something gets lost in the conversion and sounds well just not wright, it's getting there but not yet, I listen to my streamer and I listen to a song and another song pops in my head so I search for that song so not really listening listening properly but with turntable you sit back relax and listening 😁

You hit the nail on the head. Vinyl engages me with the artist. So many songs I would otherwise not hear. I am much older than you and I broke from vinyl in the 80’s when CDs came on the scene. It started me to skip songs and not listen to all the music. Now I’m back on the vinyl path. It’s the most engaging music experience for me. I recent added an Acoustic Signature Hurricane table. If someone ask me in the 70’s if I would put 20k into a turntable setup I would have laughed. Never say never. It was worth every penny.

Beautiful video jay, very personal and sincere. I started my adventure in the hi-end world by listening to your content and in three years I went from a simple hi-fi system to a system that costs like a house. Sometimes I feel like selling everything, the risk is not having fun. luckily friends often come to visit me and I go to them, and we listen to music. They are splendid moments and thanks to these this passion remains alive and grows. I 've understood that the important thing is to have fun, that's the aim of this wonderful hobby. To date I have only streamed. PS next week I get the first turntable!

Great commentary Jay! I did the whole digital thing, importing music from CD into computer, nada, nada, nada. And, while my gear pales in comparison, I quickly became a very lazy listener and over time abandoned sweet spot. Took that computer out and went back to just transport and DAC and will never go back. I always listen to entire album regardless of format. I'm from an earlier era and never liked the skipping about for tracks..

Thanks for the shout out Jay! 🙏🏻 It is always my pleasure to come hang with you and I look forward to going over the Kronos’ setup. It is wise to do a “wellness check” at least twice a year, and more ideally once a quarter, because it is not rare for a turntable to go out of alignment - even if slightly - with normal use. Also we must consider that as a new cartridge breaks-in there will be a need to reassess VTA (vertical tracking angle) to extract maximum performance. But what’s most rewarding for me each time I visit is the opportunity to introduce you to some cool new artists or music. So let’s talk later and book my visit! P.S. So happy and proud 🥹 f you for not giving up on your analog journey quite yet because our next stop is….Open Reel!!!!

I would think the economy and the mad rush to push music quicker has changed how it is made meaning just do your part and email the track to the next person .There are still some great newer artist out there today who may follow the old ways. When I used to listen albums with family we sat together and sometimes there may have been a story behind its creation like a specific studio because of the sound it added or some unique instrument. Jay you having the ability too experience Old and New music on both mediums is a testament to your systems flexibility. I like many here will live vicariously through you.

i feel like that's what happens when we have dedicated listening rooms. sitting down and listening to music is the best, but the way i discover music is when i listen while doing other things, like work, hobbies, exercise, etc. i can put on the radio (via streaming) or play a track or two from qobuz, then let it choose for me (a la pandora). and to be able to hear that through an amazing system is the best, but if the system is partitioned off from the rest of your house, there are a lot of missed opportunities. don't forget cooking with music, scenic views (if you have them), etc

Digital is often seen as plug-and-play while vinyl is a hassle that always needs tweaks and tinkering to sound good. Well, it seems the opposite is true and that's also my own experience. You should keep the turntable for that reason. And for when you find a new favorite song where the best version is on vinyl. By the way. I just came from Greg's channel where he played Putting Out Fire. It's a small (audiophile) world!

Jay, use an antistatic carbon brush before playing a record. Takes only a few seconds. And if you feel confident with it, use a stylus brush. Very delicate job. And always have bare arms near the tone arms. Shirt or sweater sleeves can catch under the arm and it's goodbye stylus and arm.

I've been through most of the audio phases.....8-tracks, cassettes, albums, CD's and now streaming.....YEAH! I'm old!..LOL But in my humble opinion, I find digital format to be superior in sound to albums. BUT! Buying an album years ago was a total experience. We couldn't wait to get the new album home and unwrap it, open it, smell it! And getting a new album with posters, lyrics, pictures, etc. Now with streaming, it's just the music.

Hi Jay! Here's a recommendation for your turntable listening time. If you can acquire a copy of Carmen-Fantasie by Anne-Sophie Mutter and the Wiener Philharmoniker conducted by James Levine, you will hear one of the most exquisite performances of Zigeunerweisen composed by Pablo De Sarasate that you will ever hear. This recording of this piece even outshines Itzak Perlman's recordings. And that's saying something. Her delicate touch of her bow on those violin strings will thrill you. If you can't locate the vinyl, it was also pressed on single layer SACD. I think you're going to be most impressed. And remember, I told you so!!

Hey Jay, if you want your digital experience to be more like your vinyl experience just pick up a cd transport. Place the cd in the transport....leave the remote on the rack and sit down. You can amass a large collection of CD's for dirt cheap...especially when compared to the price of new vinyl. I use my streamer for music discovery only because when I use my streamer I have the same issue as you....I rarely finish a song and I am all over the place. Initially seemed fun but now I hate it.

Thank you - very interesting. I agree with you on modern music. But I find music discovery in Tidal to be a huge benefit in streaming. Like I would never have found Brandi Carlile on CD - because I would never have come across the artist or actively bought the CD. I can easily find and enjoy lots of similar music to her on streaming. There is a lot of quality original music being made - but it is not popular. The lack of reimbursement for artists from streaming is a huge problem - it is around 0.15p per track. Original artists are broke because the CD revenue is gone, streaming popularity is not that high, so their income is now very low.

Nothing wrong with vinyl, I don't miss having to repeatedly get up and find the groove then reset the volume level to replay a song at all! Does make you delve deeper into an album though and catch on to other songs, since I eventually tire from getting up constantly!

Vinyl, for a newbie, is a marathon..... Not a sprint...... Don't be discouraged...... Since you are a newbie with vinyl, your biggest key right now is to find a good "vinyl rig technician" who can explain not only the vinyl setup, but also the physics involved behind the workings of vinyl playback. You will likely have to invest in some setup tools for vinyl, most notably a good spindle-pivot cartridge alignment protractor such as the Feickert or Wally Tractor. (Wally Tools also markets a comprehensive array vinyl setup devices. A good "one stop" option for vinyl rig setup devices.) If you are short on time, this technician should provide periodic maintenance to sustain the exacting alignments for good vinyl playback. (Vinyl will outperform digital by a good margin, but only if all the alignments are dialed in.... Otherwise the performance of the vinyl rig could degrade significantly, possibly falling below digital.) A good vinyl technician is like a good auto mechanic.... Especially if you lack the time and/or familiarity to keep your vinyl rig ideally set up, on your own, over an extended period of time. High-end vinyl playback is not for everyone..... If one is unfamiliar with the painstaking alignments in rig setup (which can take a lot of time), and is not able to access a technician well-versed on vinyl setup, maybe vinyl is not for him/her.

Interesting observations Jay. I don't stream or use computer based audio. I am CD/Sacd and vinyl based (now mostly CD/Sacd). Everyone thinks I'm nuts, and I get but "What about all the music that is available"? There are two answers 1) streaming makes you neurotic - you spend so much time skipping song to song that you really never listen to music 2) there really isn't any new music that I think is any good for various reasons. I grew up in the hey day of music the 60's. The question is how do you find "new" stuff? I pick a genre that interests me for example, classical. I do some research on the type of classical music I like. As I have matured my musical tastes, there is some great classical music. Another area is jazz. I am now drawn to late 50's and the early 60's jazz. There is another niche that I enjoy which is a combination of folk, roots with a touch of bluegrass or country. It's very specific. Artists such as Gretchen Peters, Sara Jarosz, Patty Griffin, Bonnie Raitt, Jason Isbell, Buddy Miller and even the latest Willie Nelson. They all have one thing in common is that they know how to write songs, perform and record. I usually use any streaming for sampling of artists that may interest me. Continued success on your audio quest.

Of course there were exceptional musicians in the past ... but let's not completely dismiss the new generation. How many completely forgotten musicians from the past for 1 David Bowie that we still play today? Same thing today ... only time will tell, which one will last for several generations. I've been listening to Lana Del Rey latest album ("Did You Know That There's a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd"), and it's really really good! The type of thing that will last a long time. Wise choice in not going down the vinyl rabbit hole. Sound quality on vinyl is even more dependent on the quality of the recording, turntable, tone arm, cartridge, phono stage than even streaming digital is on the recording and gear. Often a great DAC and amp can overcome so so digital recordings, not so with vinyl. I consider vinyl fanatics half way measure guys. The true ultra high end of analog playback is reel to reel master recording tape played via a great reel to reel machine. A great reel to reel can easily go for over $50k and a master tape copy for at least $200, some well over $1k. This why when you go attend some audio shows some of the best playback demos use master recordings on a reel to reel. So again, wise choice Jay on not trying to please the vinyl guys.

At 30 ips you’ll only get about 15 minutes on a standard 10-1/2” reel. That would mean more getting up and down.

One record that belongs in every connection is the greatest album by the greatest soul-funk artist of the 20th century, the Grammy award winning "Songs In The Key Of Life" by Stevie Wonder. Btw CD players IMO are a good compromise between digital and vinyl - you can only listen to one album at a time, but you can then program the best tracks from that album and then play those tracks on a continuous repeat loop, that is bliss to me.

Being an KZbinr equipment reviewer, I understand that you spend more time listening to the "sound" of the various components than the actual music itself. And I understand that listening to a full record on a turntable, like in the old days, can take you to another state of mind in your music appreciation (although a full side of a Metallica album may not do it for me anymore) . However, if you did the flip, i.e. forced yourself to listen to the entire digital record without touching your tablet (i.e. Joan Amartrading) and be critical of the weaknesses of turntables, you would soon realize just how limiting vinyl can be, even if it's just for the frustrating cracks and pops. If I owned an audio store, I would surely sell turntables because it's a never ending source of evermore expensive improvements (table, suspension, tone arm, cartridge, cleaning, records (first or second press) phono preamp, etc, etc, etc. :-)

So what you actually say in a condensed form. The digital is so good and is a constant and is for "business". And vinyl is for enjoyment and not as good tool for evaluating for example speakers, pre/power amps and so on. It do not possess that quality of being consistent time after time. As for example there were a CD player that were on repeat in the basement at Swedish Radio. Many years ago that played music that the occasion when there were a TV outage or before they started the broadcast for the day. That illustrated that the same output is produced at the millionth repetition as the first one.. .. until it broke (nothing is forever).😅

Great music is still being made you just have to find it. The music industry however isn’t creating big name artists like it did in the 90s, 80s and 70s. Not sure why but I imagine it has a lot to do with piracy and streaming.

@enigmatwist6548
@enigmatwist6548 Жыл бұрын
@@lsaideOK Yeah there’s still big names in music to be sure. However there isn’t as many of them and the kind of music they produce isn’t a diverse as it used to be. Plus a while back if a big name artist put out a hit tune everyone heard it but now they just don’t seem to have the same kind of visibility they once did. The revenues from big name artists made for the labels reflects this as they’ve fallen from 15% to 5% over the last decade. I also think algorithms used in streaming services are replacing the record labels role as gatekeepers to upcoming talent and this affects what we hear on the radio. It’s not necessarily a bad thing it just means the way we discover new music is changing.
@lsaideOK
@lsaideOK Жыл бұрын
@@enigmatwist6548 The way I discovered new music has changed completely. From reading Christgau's reviews in the Village Voice to following a Spotify artist radio algorithm. But there are also local bands here in Tulsa that I follow and sometimes when an artist I'm unfamiliar with plays here, I wind up following them as well. Amanda Shires for example. And there are huge acts that dominate our consciousness. According to a recent poll, 53% of Americans consider themselves Taylor Swift fans. About 7%, consider themselves Swifties. All The top 10 slots in the billboard charts were songs from Midnights when that album was released. Which has sold well over a million copies on vinyl. You have never heard Anti-hero? I don't really know what you mean by music today not being diverse. Although I mentioned Taylor Swift, I have drifted far from popular music throughout my life. From the DB's in the '70s to Karen Jonas today I take pride in finding the relatively unknown. Go back and listen to Marquee Moon by Television once in a while. Then come back and listen to Big Thief. If you like hard rock, give the Pretty Reckless a try.

With all due respect that turntable looks like something from the Twilight Zone...bought my Dual 701 new in the 70's and it still does a good job...but, at age 74, I now "do" digital...my record collection looks good, though, resting in the shelves.

DSD is supposed to be as good or better than vinyl. So it might be the best of both worlds. There are a few drawbacks though: 1) No streaming services stream in DSD (afaik), so you have to buy and download the albums you want. 2) There are very limited albums available in DSD. 3) And to get the sonic benefits of DSD, you have to have a DAC that plays DSD "natively" - meaning it doesn't convert DSD into PCM.

I feel like your missing the larger point of collecting vinyl. For me and most other folks I know who are really into it, we're really knowledgeable about the music and seek out the stores, estate sales, garage sales, record fairs, etc to find interesting old records and to expand our knowledge of musical culture. A lot of the appeal is with really old, records but not necessarily valuable ones. There's a sense of magic that a clean copy of a 50 year old record can be played on a good modern system and sound so good. That being said though, I don't really see it as being so much about the sound, because digital can honestly do as well and even better when you consider the fact that vinyl records can be so easily damaged and many of them are sub par even brand new because of the vaugarites of the manufacturing process (records are a crapshoot with so many poor pressings). So many newer records were either initially recorded or remastered digitally anyway, so if you really care about the difference between analog and digital sound you won't likely be getting the real analog with modern records anyway. Records and the stuff to play them with are expensive, inconvenient, inconsistent, fussy and frustrating. I don't see much point to the endeavour unless your someone with a voracious appetite for music and you have the time and desire to run around collecting old records. For anyone else, if they ask if vinyl is worth it, I would say that they are much better off sticking to digital and saving some money in the process - money that they can invest in better digital gear which will give them much more sonic benefits in return than chasing after some kind of "analog" sound, which most folks, other than hearing the scratches and pops on an LP, can't pick out of a lineup anyway...

You'd be better off upgrading the turntable, even if it meant someone doing it for you, rather than adding lead lined network switch boxes that will add jitter when converting to optical and back again just so you can enter their proprietary ecosystem. But it's your money.
