I tried surfing on the Baltic Sea coast in the north of Poland, where Beginner 1, Beginner 2 and Intermediate levels are offered. Waves are insufficient to offer the Advanced level classes. I wonder if, as a German, you have any experience with the Baltic Sea. I took 3 private lessons and was able to stand up on the third lesson. I was able to catch waves and ride them in the kneeling position at the end fo the first lesson. In Poland, the very first thing I was taught, on only the second lesson, was how to check the wave forecast, and surfing priority isn't usually covered until the end of the intermediate level. When I inquired locally about the levels at a surf school in Poland, I was given this information that, in order to pass a level: 1. Each level class must be repeated a minimum of 3 times, either as a weeklong course or as weekly sessions over a season, preferably at 3 different surf schools. A class equivalent is a minimum of 10 hours instruction + 5 hours supervised surf sessions, or 15 hours instruction. 2. It is expected to spend 1 day (minimum 3 hours) practising individually for every hour of lesson time. 3. The maximum permissible rate of progression is one level per year. 4. Furthermore, counting as one of the 3 classes mentioned in point (1), it is required to undertake a surf camp abroad of minimum 1 week duration in an ocean setting. Does this sound about right to you? Why do so many places withhold this sort of information? I appreciated the honesty of the information I received. Much to the contrary, I have also done windsurfing lessons, where there is a very structured program and a set checklist of skills that must be successfully demonstrated in order to pass a given level, and the information and class objectives are usually given outright.
