Manual transmissions didn't become popular in the United States until after the release of the first Fast and the Furious movie. Back in the day it was more of a class thing than performance, convenience, or efficiency. Before 2001 manual transmissions were seen as the "Poor man's option" here in the US. This isn't the first threat of a manual transmission extinction either. There are some articles and videos about the auto industry moving away from manual transmissions during a similar situation happening all the way back in the early 2000's. IIRC, one of the articles/videos is from a British publication and it's titled something like "How America Killed the Manual Transmission".

Now I can finally say "I own both a manual and an automatic car. I like them both." Granted said cars are polar opposites (1990 Miata and '66 Thunderbird, T-birds were only available with 3-speed autos), but their transmissions both suit their personalities perfectly. One thing I'll say about the three-speed "slushbox" that so many car guys vilify for being slow and inefficient, is that having fewer speeds lets the engine rev longer so you really get to hear the fun V8 noises, and then when it finally shifts it's like the whole car just relaxes as the RPM suddenly lowers. It's strangely calming. I feel like a lot of car guys get stuck in a niche and focus on a very particular vehicle type, and don't realize it can be really fun to experience and appreciate polar opposite ends of the automotive spectrum. I love my small darty manual sports car and my big heavy automatic lux-o-barge. They're fun in completely different ways and the contrast between the two highlights what makes both of them special.

I agree. You can like some of everything! My 2020 WRX and 1979 Jeep Wagoneer, 6 speed manual vs 3 speed automatic, are like two different planets. Similar experience here. My first car was a '70 Firebird, a base 350 V8 with a 3 speed Hydromatic. It was already old when I bought it, but the transmission was smooth and shifted quickly, very well matched to the engine. It had so much torque that it never needed more gears (though an overdrive would have been nice) and was as fast or faster than most performance cars in 1990. Had to have it rebuilt and it was never as good. My 01 Miata has a six speed stick. Can be driven easy or frantic. The Miata is more of a precision instrument whereas the Firebird was more of a general bruiser. Both are/were gobs of fun.

Italian here @BladedAngel I drive a manual and the company where I work produces a shitload of automatics. I personally don't see the issue: you want better gas mileage? Go with an automatic or learn how your manual behaves (it's still a bit worse but you can get close). You want an extra safety measure by using engine brake when you need it? Drive a manual. I don't understand Americans and their elitism for this kind of stuff... it should be common knowledge.

as someone who rides as well i think the main reason bikers dont brag about riding manual is because there isnt really much option otherwise. there are few offerings for motorcycles that have an automatic transmission and the weight and complexity they add usually outdoes any good they bring (except for perhaps those with disabilities) and so manual is essentialy the only choice for a motorcycle. and no im not including scooters because i personally class them as a slightly different mode of transport, in the same way i wouldnt talk about vans when talking about cars, even if that analogy doesnt perfectly translate i hope you see what i mean. pretty sure if there were more auto bikes you would still get a demographic of elitists sayiing that manual is better, which for motorcycles is almost objectively the case due to weight savings and simplicity

I think it’s a “character” thing when it comes to vehicles. Especially when I comes to things that are louder and/or harder to operate. I’ve seen some folk decry electric dirt bikes making motocross less interesting as well as people crapping on four stroke engines and being nostalgic for the smell, sound, and difficulty of two stroke engines even one guy saying after seeing a guy struggle on a 2 stroke bike: “if you cannot ride a two stroke, you cannot handle life.”

What about manual windows mechanism - would you prefer this as well? The MT/AT doesn't make change what you drive, but how you operate the car. Unlike EV vs ICE changes entire concept and character of the vehicle.
@LAndrewsChannel
@LAndrewsChannel 7 ай бұрын
@@AK.__ Not a valid comparision. Power windows are an accessory, like radio or AC, it doesn't affect how you drive the car, unlike MT/AT that changes how you directly interact with the powertrain. Also, compared to an AT ICE car, what major "concept" does the EV change? The fact that it makes less/different sound and has linear power delivery? It is still a car in the end and you interact the same way with it.
@AK.__
@AK.__ 7 ай бұрын
@@LAndrewsChannel Power windows aren't accessory any more. Yes, it was in the past. I never driven EV, but I've heard from people that they less use brake / accelerator, cause the car somehow "picks up by itself" needed speed. Plus technology differences - small motors instead of engine and some regenerating mechanisms. But again, just my opinion. AT and MT aren't much different, and in conditions of nowadays constant traffic, i prefer AT. (together with fact, that MT on the cars that I prefer will cost extra $$$)
@LAndrewsChannel
@LAndrewsChannel 7 ай бұрын
@@AK.__ Power windows are 100% an accessory, they are not a core part of the car. The fact that they tend to be included in all new cars is irrelevant. Please refrain from making statements like "EVs change the entire concept" if most of your knowledge about them comes from hearsay, especially if you haven't even driven one. I have one and it literally drives like any AT car: you press accelerate to go faster and brake to slow down/stop/keep the car stopped. Lifting the pedal off the acceleration (and not braking) slow you down similar to engine braking (configurable behavior). You have the *option* to drive using a single pedal in some cars, but that doesn't mean it can't drive like a convetional AT ICE car. "small motors instead of engine" might be true for AWD EVs, but not for most single axle drive EVs, as they use a single motor. Also, the size of the motors is irrelevant, only their power output matters.

I mean, there’s a reason paddle-shifters are used in motorsports. Truthfully speaking, for racing aside from drag, having control over the car’s gears still has its place, and it’s certainly for more than just maintaining competitiveness in these sports. Your car can only judge its shifts on limited information, it can only make decisions based on what’s happening in the moment directly on the car, it doesn’t see track ahead or know what the driver intends to do with it. In other words, pros still need that kind of control over the car to maximize its on-track effectiveness.

Definitely can confirm over the many cars ive owned so far in my short 8 years of driving that the manual vs automatic debate is just ridiculous. I used to swear by manuals myself as my first car was stick but then I got an automatic charger and having the two side by side I got manual when I wanted and Auto when I wanted. I enjoyed both. Now fast forward today where my love for MINI has had 2 years to mature I found I loved a good auto with paddle shifters just as much as I liked a good manual transmission. I traded in my R60 for an F60 and lost the paddle shifters and honestly slap shifting just isn't the same as those nice paddles. But I also have an R53 JCW with a manual and I love both my MINIs the same. I did find it comical the last one being about Xenon headlights because I wanted to make sure my R53 had the Xenons because that meant they had the projector headlights which honestly just look better to me than the standard reflective halogen headlight assembly. Very much a fan of projector headlights as I swapped the stock headlights on my charger for Spyder projectors and my Celica GTS also has projectors as well as both my MINIs.

Honestly most peoples cars would be fine with a set of Enkei RPF1's. Which are basically a more advanced version of a cast wheel. Idk exactly how Enkei's M.A.T. pricess works but for roughly $250-$300 a wheel theyre suprisingly lightweight, and surprisingly strong. They are a great wheel for track cars that arent super highend. And if you manage to break one they arent a grand to replace. Got a buddy who races in gridlife with them in the Street-Mod class woth over 550hp and has had no issues yet.

As a German, I had to decide when I got my driver's license whether I ever wanted to drive a manual car or not. Here you have to complete the driving lessons and, at the time, the final test with a manual transmission in order to be allowed to drive manual cars later on. When I bought my first car for €2000 when I was 18 (Ford Fiesta 2006), only the manual version was available at that price, the automatic alternative was much more expensive. In my opinion, the price is the main advantage these days. Having driven both types of car a lot, I opted for the manual version for my last purchase (Audi A4 Cabrio 3.0), as I see driving pleasure as the top priority in a sporty but relatively slow convertible. In the end, both transmissions have their advantages and disadvantages. As a commuter vehicle, I prefer automatic these days, while for "fun cars" I prefer manual.

The problem with Auto over Stick is that at this point, we know it is slower. Hard to compete with a well built 8-10 speed auto. But it is such a more entertaining ride. I will never have the fastest car and with HP number now, I don’t want them. Auto is so much faster straight line nowadays, but man are they boring. I miss my stick shift dearly and am looking at what my options are now.

I worked in automotive parts for years in both independent shops and dealerships. The inexpensive xenon bulbs are the same thing as halogens, but using mostly xenon gas as the inert filler that prevents the filament from burning out 2 seconds after you turn the lights on. The xenon gas causes the filament to glow at much whiter than the yellowish color halogens put out. Some people find this helps visibility, but it's subjective, as the actual lumen count is usually nearly identical to the halogen bulbs. I think the real reason it caught on is because HID (High Intensity Discharge) lamps use xenon gas in their capsules, making people think they were getting the high output light like expensive cars. Real HID bulbs put out more light than halogen or LED bulbs, but are very cost prohibitive to retrofit into cars with an actual quality product. If you want better light for your car, get a $100 LED kit (not the cheap kits on amazon or ebay) and enjoy the brighter roads. Remember to AIM the headlights after installing (Don't be like the Jeep Wrangler owners, I swear they have a rule that they're not allowed to aim headlights properly or something)

Xenon and HID headlights are an absurd expense, I used to work at an O’Reillys and HID headlights were about $130 PER BULB that more expensive than a pair of LED bulbs while the LEDs are going to be brighter, more reliable, and easier to find replacements for.

main reason why halogen lamps are still around? as you've mentioned, xenons aren't actually that beneficial to the one driving the car, but one thing they ARE very good at is blinding oncoming traffic. same is true for LEDs, only that those come with the additional problem of not generating enough heat to keep your headlights defrosted, meaning you'd need to install heating into the headlights, which defeats the entire purpose of LEDs being more efficient.

pro tip, save money and waist and increase enjoyment: if you run through boots in a year and see them as a wear item, stop replacing them constantly. buy a really good, comfortable and durable pair, and then instead of replacing them, take them to a cobbler and have them repaired/ sole replaced. so few people these days have ever had a shoe repaired because they’re seen as a replacement item

I drive an 01 Miata with a manual transmission, so speed was never the main objective for me. I just genuinely prefer the tactile sensation of shifting the car myself, especially since my daily driver is a traditional sports car. That most of my American countrymen can't actually drive it is a fun bonus. I've had young people drive up in fast cars and give me flak, and it's fun to watch them lose their minds when I look over and say something like "ah, wimp shift, eh?" Cue yelling and cussing, insulted manhood galore. Ain't a feelin' like it in the world.

For HID bulbs it does make a difference, while measured light output can be the same, our eyes are more sensitive to the bluer light produced so perceived brightness is higher. It’s why if you have 2 identical LED bulbs shining on something the cooler color one will look brighter

Only really insecure people (so, most of them these days, sadly..) give others crap for their personal choices, no matter what they have or like. I got a varied vehicle "collection" and I dont care if you got the slowest, lowest spec econobox of a car ever made, if you like and take an interest in it, you are cool. I am 100% serious. My mom has a manual Kia Soul. It’s the definition of an economy box. It had to be one of the cheapest new cars available back in 2017. That trim didn’t even come stock with a wireless key or alarm lol. Doesn’t have more than 120 hp. But it’s small, light and has a 6-speed. It’s genuinely a fun little car to drive, I love it. And it gets like 40mpg driving conservatively. I’ve not driven an automatic Soul but I wouldn’t imagine it’s half as fun. Oh and with Kia’s immobilizer issues in those years, an auto would have definitely been stolen by now.

I'd consider myself a bit of a manual elitist. I think a manual transmission is better for anyone who cares about driving and think that every sports car should have one available. That being said the reason we're angry and might lash out at automatic enthusiasts (which i don't necessarily agree with unless someone's being smug about the "death of the manual") is that we see manuals slowly disappearing from the world of sports cars. The problem isn't that automatics are available, but that an option to have a manual isn't there anymore... They can't be found in racing anymore (they remain only in very small/local categories) and it's becoming harder and harder to find a cool sports car with a manual on the used market. We're in a situation where automatics are being basically forced on us.

9:12 Even if xenons are not brighter then halogen/incandescent headlights, people see better at night under cooler (bluer) light, so they likely feel that way. Note though that this is not a limitation for LEDs, since they can be made in whichever light temperature you prefer (or even make them adjustable).

i view a Manual as engagement. But not as engagement that should be forced down everyones throat. A Manual is splendid, love myself a car with a good manual. But to those who dont care about manuals, i will not judge them. As long as they dont get themselves a CVT-Nissan. I'd love to have a manual swap in my car, but due to the size it's practically impossible unless i work 10 years at a oldtimer mechanic AND then have the guts to do that on my own.

I drive manual because I like it. Slower? yup. Less torque? yup. Do I care? no. I do it because it's fun. I had an old daily beater with a 5 speed, would still be in it, but it got totaled in a wreck(thankfully I wasn't at fault). When it came to buying a new one it was either a CVT(oh hell no) or a stick. The choice for me was obvious, esp since the spark rental I was stuck with had a CVT, and I hated that little turd's road manners(or lack thereof). TLDR: I drive stick because I have fun doing so.

Japan has a separate driver’s license for manual transmission drivers like the UK, but sadly, manual transmission is very unpopular there, just like the US. Japan still has a solid community of manual transmission car enthusiasts, but once outside of the car guy bubble, everyone else just buys an automatic. Less than 5% (maybe even lower, I can’t recall) of cars in Japan sold are manual.

I used to have a car with bi xenon headlights, and they were utterly amazing. Especially they look just better. Now i drive a car with Halogen, and boy did they stink in comparison. I now have LED bulbs but in my country you can not legaly change the bulb type because your headlights have only been approved for one bulb type. Only 2 years ago did Phillips and Osram manage to bring out legal ones that still need to be approved for your car. So in most cases you are stuck with Halogen which makes Xenon a great selling point
