I'm syrian and my cousin when he was in the army he got an order to send supplies to the tadmor prison. Upon entering the reception area there is a writing on the wall "he who is inside is forgotten, and he who gets out is reborn" when Assad's secret police ever took someone they usually say to their families to forget about them "he who is inside is forgotten" and if you ever get out you will never be the same "he who gets out is reborn". The guards told him while laughing that Prisoners usually never see the sunlight. People their are tortured in ways we can’t even to imagine in our worst nightmares, and those tortures aren’t made as to make them confess or something like that, the guards torture them until the prisoners die.

In some countries jails are just like holiday resorts. I never will agree to this. Also they get sentenced to 6 years for very serious crimes, but then get out in half that time on parole, and more time is shaved off again for good behaviour. That is absolute CRAP. The law is showing criminals they can do as they please and that victims impacts are trivialised. Come on! I would never forgive someone who has swindled ppl out of all their money or murdered. After all he put someone underground. Why should he be sympathised with? Human rights my ASS! Evil ppl NEVER change. When these fiends get out, they are not reformed, but regroup.

Be warned though, the book was originally written in Arabic and although I think there's an English translation of it I don't think it's easy to get. It's a depressing book to read and although it claims to be real a account of the victim's experience in this prison, and the mistreatment of inmates in this prison. Would recommend to read if you don't get depressed or disturbed easily.

And the irony of it all is, that harsh punishment is a rather ineffective way to better people....If you put criminals in such enviroments, you won't turn most of them into law abiding citizens, but into mentally sick, traumatized and extremely frustrated criminals.

I was in 3 different state prisons in Pennsylvania from October 2018 til March 2022 so I experienced covid start to end In prison..it was pretty bad, most times we got a .5oz pack of peanut butter and bread, an apple, and a small soup pack of saltine crackers for lunch, locked in for weeks without a call home or a shower, when we did shower it was limited between 400 inmates on the block so we got like 3-5 minutes. I mean I did break the law and put myself there so I can't really say it wasn't my own fault I experienced this among many other things, but it was definitely on the borderline of cruel at times.

This is so sad and scary af. The ones meant to protect society from atrocities are the very ones performing them. There is only one differences between violent criminals and the ones claiming to "contain/correct" them... government sanction. They do this blindly even to individuals of non-violent crimes and the completely innocent. It's absolutely heinous and the reason why the people don't trust them and oppose them.

I figure that only those who have never been directly affected by criminals can actually take pity on them and their living conditions... (edit) I'm very surprised none of Brazil's prisons are on this list...

If you can’t do the time, don’t do that crime. A human should never be treated like this but at the end of the day it ain’t no once’s fault but theirs.

Innocent people imprisoned and outright abuse is horrible, however for the people that do deserve to be there, prison is meant as a punishment.
