Your piece is quite interesting, but it mistakenly states that French is spoken in South American countries, which is not true. About 295K people in French Guiana speak French and also creole. Other than that, you may find people who speak French as a second language, but that's all.

Excellent list, but I disagree with French. It takes an enormous effort (not the grammar, but speaking and understanding, spoken French is a whole different language than the written one). It's all very compact, a little sound is already a word. I studied it for many years and never learned it. And the reward is small: basically France, in French-speaking Africa many speak English, in Belgium, too, and Switzerland, as well. Italian brings less rewards, Italy only, but it's easy to learn. I never really studied it, but when in Italy I was able to hold long conversations in Italian or "Portiliano" with lots of people (Italians never stop talking). Italian is really straight-forward. Russian, I find fascinating, it opens the box for a whole bunch of languages. The grammar requires some effort but is truly fascinating, and the pronunciation is easy and pleasant. I studied it only during few months but a lot of it stayed, and I sort of liked the Russians, funny bunch. My teacher was like: "You are very lazy. You must be hungry. Now, eat this sandwich I made for you". Portuguese, I agree with you, and you can use it in the most unexpected places. I went to Luxembourg for a job interview, and couldn't speak to the taxi driver, who didn't speak English nor German, but I sensed a Portuguese accent, and we had a nice conversation. The same at the hotel reception, the restaurant, and the airport check-in. And Chinese, the effort to learn it is too high: Tonalities, each word a symbol. In Asia, I would rather learn Japanese or Korean, if I were to learn a language over there.
Hey. Apart from America and Spain, Spanish is also spoken here in Africa. Equatorial Guinea 🇬🇶 which is my county, has Spanish as the official language.

I take the same approach. Started learning Spanish because it was required in middle school. Continued because had many friends who spoke it. Chose Burmese, Haitian Creole and Karenni (a tribal language) because of the people in my community. I would like to pick Korean back up for the same reasons and also add Chinese because and Arabic in the future. I wish I had an excuse to learn Portuguese and Russian. They sound so beautiful to me.

My plan for language learning, optimized in terms of population and territory covered: 1. English 1.132 billion total speakers 23% land area 2. Mandarin Chinese 1.117 billion total speakers 6% land area 3. Spanish 534 million total speakers 8% land area 4. French 280 million total speakers 9% land area 5. Standard Arabic 274 million total speakers 10% land area 6. Russian 258 million total speakers 11% land area With these six languages, a person can communicate with over 50% of the world’s population in 67% of the world’s land area. These six languages also happen to be the six official languages of the United Nations. I included Russian and Arabic because, although they don't reach as many people as higher population languages like Hindi or Bengali, they cover 21% of the world's land area, while Hindi and Bengali cover only about 3%. I considered Japanese, but it's only 13th in terms of population, and not even 1% in terms of of land area.

I don't really know the differences since I only learned the Brazilian Portiguese and I never learned the one spoken in African countries, I think it only differs by pronunciation and some vocabulary. Just as the Portuguese in Portugal (which I understand but didn't study either).

The Portuguese spoken in Africa is the same Portuguese spoken in Portugal with slight accent differences. In fact all slang in Portugal tends to come from Angola. Brazilian Portuguese is very specific to Brazil but every lusophone will understand you.

I want to learn as many latin based languages as I can, including Japanese. I'm puerto rican so spanish is a priority, but I do find portuguese and french difficult compared to italian due to the pronounciation of things. I grew up hearing spanish all my life so how things are pronounced in portuguese and french I just find to be a little difficult. But I've always found language learning exciting :)
@geoffk7773 жыл бұрын
Japanese is definitely not Latin-based. It's not even based on Chinese, although they got some vocabulary and written characters from there. Grammatically, it's similar to Korean, but it's really in a universe of its own. I definitely don't want to discourage you from studying it. But don't expect to carry over your knowledge of other languages to Japanese, the way that French carries over to Italian.

Same here. Althoght Spanish is not as easy as people say. They have 2 verbs for "be", more complicated Grammar. Also the way that you talk to old people, the polite speech - in French you just use "vous". But in Spanish they have 3 different forms for that. I don't think it's that simple as people say.
