If I could make a suggestion. My trailer has a 2" square tube at the front of the deck. It is 18" off the deck. I carry two spare tires that ride on axle stubs and spindles. By carrying them this way it also gives two sets of bearing ready to be swapped to the trailer axle. It works well. I have had a bearing go out and had to change bears on the road. The bearings on the spare tire racks are pre-lubed and ready to install. Before this I had carried spare bearing and a tube of grease in the tool box. 50 years of towing various trailers this is by far the best way to carry backup bearing. Just thought you would like the suggestion. Great video.

Great idea on small trailers! Hopefully many read your comment. I am building one with a 3500lb axle and electric brakes. Since the brake drum is the hub, this suggestion is not as ideal with brakes, but on these small trailers- a wonderful idea!
@acklan34 жыл бұрын
👍 I understand. My trailer is a two axle car hauler with a tilt deck. You are correct that a spare electric brake setup is difficult but you can still run a non-brake hub. You would not have brakes on the affected axle but it would get you off the side of the rode. Like I said just a suggestion. great video. Because of this video I will be welding a 5k jack behind the axles on each side of the trailer. I think that would be a $200 well spent.

Weather proof (Thomson sealer) top and bottom of wood deck and do it as often as necessary. These two things are the MOST important ones you'll ever do to extend trailer life. 3. Install telescopic stands in the back of trailer, work great for loading/unloading heavier loads + when storing, you can lift the trailer off the ground.

Got one other tip for ya, instead of using those 2 x6 boards on the floor of your trailer. Go buy some 3/4” or 1” waterproof plywood and you can get the plywood covered with plastic laminate on both side of the plywood too. If you use 3/4” thick plywood, I doubled it up on my floor of my trailer making it a 1 1/2” thick. Since my trailer was a 5 x12 trailer I put a 12” seam on the plywood floor on the left side with the first piece of 3/4” plywood then put the seam on the right side for the second layer of 3/4” plywood. It will never crack, warp, twist, and will outlast any of those 2x6 or 2x8 etc for decades! Put this on the floor of my trailer over 10 years ago and still looks like new for the most part other then some scratches on the laminate where I’ve used a shovel to get out dirt, gravel and bark dust. Which with the laminate on the floor it makes sliding a shovel across the floor slick as can be having nothing to hang up on like splintered wood on those 2x6 boards and no spaces between boards also means no materials like dirt can fall thru the cracks since it’s a solid floor with the plywood and I guarantee the plywood will hold way more weight then those 2x6 will too! Even if the waterproof plywood cost more? The fact that it outlast the 2x6 by literally decades and you won’t need to have to spend the time and expense of replacing the 2x6 boards. Over time you’ll find even paying more for the plywood still will be cheaper over time to use as a trailer floor. Just amazes me that more people haven’t figured out that plywood and even CDX plywood better then those 2x6 boards for so many different reasons. Having plywood got those several layers all glued together and each layer has the grain running the opposite way that makes more strength as well as more stable material than any solid board ever will be! Back when I was a poor boy and couldn’t afford waterproof materials like I used now. I just used regular fir plywood on my trailer floor and put a sealer on it. That floor lasted over 15 years before I ever had to replace it and the trailer sat out in the weather year round too! You will never be disappointed if when you need to replace those 2x6 boards and you change to a good plywood floor you’ll never go back to using solid wood boards again I promise you!

I have the Lowe's 6x10-ft Utility Trailer with Wire Mesh all the way around and the Ramp Gate. I noticed that your mesh is welded from the top when down which I wish I had. I was carrying something up the ramp when the mesh gave way under me. If it were on top like yours, it probably would not have broken. Now I have to wield angle iron around the outside over the mesh because I don’t trust wielding the mesh. Also I found that I don’t really have much to tie off to and have broken the mesh on the sides as well so I want to wield tabs around the sides to attach hooks to. My trailer already had the jack in front, but I bent it after forgetting to jack it all the way up. I thought about buying a fold up jack to replace it, but was worried about drilling into the A-frame because it had all the wiring run through it. I also lost my license plate because it had a plastic mount. I sometimes load it without being connected to the truck and the rear goes down to hit the ground and I’m thinking of welding a jack or something on the back to prevent that from happening. I’m tired of looking for large rocks and such to put under it because my jack stands are too tall. I don’t have a spare tire and I really like how you have yours set up so that you can easily lift the trailer.

Apparently you live away from prying eyes and thieves as your trailer would be quite a target. I love the idea of moving the jack to the rear. Unfortunately most trailers come with a jack with a wheel which is quite necessary to have most of the time although most of them are crappy at best. I'm not sure how well the wheel type would work in the rear. They probably have a lower load rating than your type. You might want to consider hitting the underside with some rust inhibitor. I use LPS #3.
@PaulsProTips2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I like the town I live in- but theft could happen anywhere. A trailer dolley helps move this when loaded. The nice thing about the jack mount is you could carry one with a wheel and one with a foot. The spare could ride in the tool box, or hand on one of the other mounts. One thing I really appreciate with this economy trailer is how lightweight it is. When empty, I can easily move it around my place by hand.

@@PaulsProTips I did the modifications to my boat trailer. I used a 5k lb drop jack instead of the smaller one because the gears should hold up much longer. The biggest improvement for a trailer, especially for a marine application, come down to wiring. I don't know about you but my light used to fail almost every time I went to use it and 99% of the time it was because of grounding. The trailer rust overtime and you lose your connection so the lights quit working. What I did was run a 3 wire to every light such as this, www.amazon.com/dp/B01MTDE0VO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_PFAYA8MXNKYXP4HEJ4YB?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1. My trailer tongue was made with 2 pieces of 3" channel stitch welded. 🤔 thats not how i used to build them. Anyhow, I cut that off & replaced it with 3" x 3" x 3/16" square tubing. Extended it 2' and put my full size truck tool box on it. It can carry a 120v wire welder, chainsaw, 100' cord, cordless tools & hand tools + other miscellaneous items. Nice mods on yours.

Little more tongue weight is usually good. Sounds like a nice mod. What size/ weight and number if axles do you have?

One tip....mount your license plate on the gate itself up high....you will never have an issue again

That is a good tip. Some trailers I remove the gate, and this one I fold it down flat at times, but your suggestion will work great on some!

great video love the upgrades, iv got one more for you that a trailer dealer suggested to do Take some Thompsons water seal to the planks it not only keeps them from soaking in water and making your trailer heavier but it keeps them in good shape. even if you have old planks it cant hurt

@@Chugwater_Cowboy I appreciate your reply. I had seen a video of a guy using a 5 part hydraulic oil to 1 part diesel oil on a trailer deck. Said you could kneel on it after 24 hrs and not stain your pants. I certainly have enough wast oil, diesel oil etc to try this. I'm gonna post an update on a new trailer build. If you see a new video, I would appreciate your input on the decking (or anything else). Thank you!

Try crossing the chains if the tongue comes loose it will rest on the chains instead of digging into the ground. Allows you to safely stop.
@PaulsProTips3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and the comment! You're totally right and hopefully this comment helps others. If you look closely @ 3:08 mark, you may see the chains crossed- but I failed to call it out while doing it. I've seen plenty of trailers running down the road without the chains crossed. Thanks for the comment!

Another mod or two and you are golden.. Need to put expanded metal on the sides of the trailer, so, you can put things in the trailer that might roll or bounce out (gas cans, etc..), and a bunch of hooks or loops around the outside rail for places to tie things off in the trailer.. Always the first mods I make to a new trailer.. I also always redesign my tailgate, so I can remove it quickly, in the event I need to haul something longer than the trailer, or load a piece of equipment with some ramps that I build (for a larger trailer of course).. And,, you never know when you need to "Pull or winch" something on the trailer, so, a piece of flat plate and 2-1/2" x 1/4" square tubing so you can put a trailer hitch and a winch or come a long and have something to pull in front of the trailer.. You can make mods all day on these things and make them really live up to the name "Utility Trailer".. Cheers. Thought you might want some more ideas for tinkering.. Ha..Ha..
@PaulsProTips5 жыл бұрын
Some great ideas there. I am picking up another trailer for free, which is suffering from some differed maintenance. Gonna do some "live action" video and really appreciate your comments. The square tube for the winch is certainly smart!

@@PaulsProTips It's a mod I have done on several trailers.. I have a portable 12V winch I bought from Harbor Freight years ago that hooks onto a trailer ball, so, I just pull it out and drop the trailer hitch in, slip the winch over the ball and hook up the Extension cord I have to run to the Truck battery.. D/C requires much larger wires to handle the same voltage A/C does, so, easier to hook up a vehicle close to the trailer for the 12v supply, but, I have a pair of jumper cables that I have quick connects on, so, I can just use my welding cable extensions to connect from the battery, past the truck to the trailer winch.. An expense you don't want to have to make just to use it for those few times you need a winch.. But, can always use the Trailer hot on the truck for the Trailer Brakes in a pinch and just use it a little slower, not to heat up the winch or wires running to it.. I installed a 10ga wire with a 30 amp circuit fuse from the battery to the center pin on the trailer connector and use it now to plug the winch directly into it. I also beefed up the ground wire from the truck to the frame with a 10ga wire, so they are matched.. Just some FYI's before you run into them.. BTW.. You can also use another vehicle/4 wheeler, etc,, and use a rope over the ball and pull it to the side if you are not pulling something real heavy onto the trailer, or don't have a winch.. I loaded a car on my trailer not too long ago for someone and used a tractor to pull it up, just because it was quicker than using the winch as far as pull speed.. Cheers.

@@PaulsProTips You might want to check out some of my videos on trailers, etc.. You can't beat my mix for protecting the wooden decks.. I make my own safety hooks too.. I like the longer shanks.. And, I did a rework on my dump trailer with the sides and spare tire that I really liked. I need to do one on the mods I did to my little utility trailer 5'x8'.. Always missing time to do videos.. Cheers..

Nice modifications. Makes the trailer that much more useable. Also, the late model rear bumper swap on the pick up looks sharp.
@PaulsProTips5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! The mods have been very rewarding and I appreciate the encouraging comments. The old truck has an 8.1 in it with over 350k. The bumper update was necessary due to a rusty bumper (under the plastic covers). You have a sharp eye sir!

Love the tailgate assist. I purchased a used trailer and swapped out the boards due to half being broken with 2x6 ones. Nice and thick. You did not mention trailer hooks. I’m not sure I saw any on yours? I added a total of 4, may add two more in very front. Purchased the large ones from Harbor Freight at $4 a piece and 3/8 screws/locks/ bolts from Home Depot. Those hooks were a must have for me. Very easy and fast to drill through the metal frame. Thanks for the video. I will be looking for the tailgate assist now.

Safety chains are supposed to be attached on trailer tongue so they can be crossed for mounting on vehicle so that if trailer uncouples it will cradle the trailer tongue. Spare tire mounting should be on side nearest the ditch not the roadway driving side.
@PaulsProTips Жыл бұрын
Agreed on the fact that the preferred side for mounting a spare tire is the side the ditch is on. I carry two spares now on this. One on each side. Great point on the chains. I may take for granted that people understand that the chains are to be crossed to create a basket to catch the trailer tounge, should anyone be unfortunate enough to have it come disconnected. If I recall, around 3:08 you may see the chains were previously crossed and though I move the chain from. The trailer to the hitch, without showing they are crossed, they actually are already crossed. I really appreciate the comment and hope some will learn from reading your good advice!

Put a piece of plywood behind the license plate. I had mine getting bent as it would brush up against things backing the trailer by hand into a tight space. The plywood kept it in a lot better shape.
