I spent my earliest years in some of these parks. Thanks for letting me see them again.

I used to go to Penn Park back in the 50's and early 60's before we moved. I remember when they had ducks in the pond, and abundant water rushing down the streams. I learned to weave lanyards there by the crafts shed. We used to have picnics there on the bbqs, and roast hot dogs. I've been back recently, and it's still as beautiful, like stepping back in time and I'm in 1960 again. Although no ducks in the pond now, still a moment captured in time. Think I'll go back again soon. Thanks for posting this. Love Whittier.

Penn's neat. No Central Park, but then what could match NY's famous Central Park (not even LA's MacArthur's..BTW WHittier has its Central..but not the same. Penn is unique)

1960 was when I was born.

Sometime during the mid 60s, someone put a lot of soap in the duck pond/stream. All the ducks drowned and they were not encouraged to return after that. A lot of angry unhappy people from that sad episode. Word at the time was that it was a "college prank", nobody was ever charged that I recall. I grew up there from the early 50s , went to school at Sierra HS and worked my senior year at Monte Vista. Both LONG gone....

Central Park is my favorite, in the old Historic District. I visit every time I'm in town. It makes me happy.

I used to love going there on the 4th of July. That merry go round with no floor was scary as hell but so much fun!

I love Palm Park, sometimes I would come by and ride my bike on the greenway trail all the way to Laurel Elementary, then back home. I remember vaguely playing in the swingsets at the playground in Palm Park, good times!

A number of comments about 'Michigan Park'..... When I was in high school (Sierra), my parents bought the old ranch house at the corner of Michigan and Second St. The land for Michigan Park was set aside but essentially unimproved when I left Whittier in 1968. It was plenty large enough parcel to have a nice park, but I have never returned to see what it ever became....... hmmm In my day, Penn Park was the nicest park in town, loved that place, plus it was pretty close to where we lived.

Did the park have a teaching building for crafts back then? My mom took ballet and then painting classes about the time you left. We still have her paintings.

For a relatively Small Park 'Penn Park' is uniquely beautiful & tranquil- Esp. W/ it's Water Ponds which go back to the 1950's & 60's when I grew up in Whittier- not a better place for a Birthday Party or celebration of any kind- incl. Weddings... of which there have been Many...

My favorite park in Whittier is probably Mayberry park
@sunshine91223 жыл бұрын
You must live in South Whittier like me.
@veganconservative110926 күн бұрын
Was Mayberry the one the schools would take you to that had St. Augustine grass (or it was tough, anyway) and so very, very, very many stinkbugs? I can remember a large park with other young students around and the boys kept stomping on the darn bugs. Was not my favorite day. 😆 Much preferred the tiny park (Anaconda?) with the metal spaceship and slide. If you had more will power you'd skip the slide for later and climb further up to play with the 'steering wheel'. God, I loved that ship. It was about the only thing the park had (that I noticed) but it was so worth it as a space-happy kid.

I have old family movies of us kids playing in a kiddie wading pool/fountain. We think this was at Penn Park in the early 1960's. Does anyone know if there was a kids fountain like this and does it still exist or not?
