The No Man’s Sky universe is full of strange and diverse characters: ranging from immortal travelers to doppelgangers to false gods. 2023’s NMS Interceptor has brought the conflict with the Abyss ever closer to us and so I thought it might be a good idea to figure out who will have our backs, and who might stab them. While he’s not fully sinister, Tethys does try to scam you and pass itself off as a Gek when you first meet them, so I wouldn’t say you can trust them either. A bit of moral grey with that one.

Which is why when someone looks for units in the nexus, I always have them meet me by Tethys's bench, for a shady briefcase exchange ;) Also if you accidentally destroy Laylaps he gives you grief. Maybe he is a bit sus '^_^

I have a theory of Tethys and Ariadne both being "void" travellers who assumed the faces and identities of the travelers in question. They both talk about how they "stole" their faces, or use "different iterations just like you, like-traveller". They are even able to identify you regardless of what race, iteration, etc, you are. They relay the research that's found in the Anomaly back to the Void Mother; who may even run their own version of an Anomaly. The new expedition definitely makes me think Tethys is related to the Void in many ways we don't know about, how was a traveller able to rebuild an Autophage (which was made by the Void Mother) otherwise?

@@Halosrighthand During the weekly community missions to lead in to crossplay announcement, it is revealed Ariadne was killed while out on a mission and the current one is an imposter. Tethys is also the guy who gets you to build Laylaps (and will allow you to rebuild if you lose the item) and Laylaps is connected to void mother and the world of glass if you've read the logs from base computer missions and some others. I dunno if its my imagination or has always been there but i'm only noticing this now, the iterations on the anomaly all emit a glow (might have always been a thing, to highlight the character) but i swear its purple now and i dunno if it always was. My mind is corrupted -kzzzkt-

Tethys is very shady, especially since he helped you construct Layla’s. If I remember right, Tethys even mentions a abysal connection to the anomaly… and he did tell you to go get resources from Ariadne. The mole… so he is very shady

I would argue that you can't trust anyone in NMS. The existence of the translator upgrades may be considered indication that Telamon is responsible for your understanding of any and all speech. If this is true, he could theoretically be feeding you false information or even audio.

You have a reason to be. Laylaps is clearly working with the Abyss and thinks they are trying to save the Universe. They have been the the World of Glass, and they know Telamon, who holds a grudge against the Atlas.

Ultimately I want to purge the corruption, undo the destruction caused by the first spawn and upload the atlas to the cloud. We are the perfect traveler, we're better than null, and stronger than the sentinel hordes. The atlas knows this, which is why it only speaks to us now, why it allows us to use the levers of creation with the star seeds. We can be the one that unites the three factions once and for all. That would be cool at least

As far as the Abyss is concerned, I feel like it is aware of the impending demise of the Atlas, but cannot comprehend (or possibly simply refuses to accept) how its fate is inextricably linked to the Atlas.

ECHOES SPOILERS Now that I look back on this video with the knowledge that there is MUCH more to Nada’s backstory than we thought really makes me feel uneasy. Nada knows about Korvax Prime and the Void Mother and all that, but kept the information from us possibly due to some kind of PTSD. Now I feel like Nada feels guilty for hiding it from us, and they might sacrifice themselves to make sure us and the rest of the Anomaly can live on. I’ll come back to this video after the next update to see if I’m right. This was a great video though!

I've had the whole "the atlas escapes by realising its own universe is a simulation" theory going around in my head for a long time and it really does feel more and more like it's going that way :) Another thing that has always had me thinking this way was, theres an episode of Black Mirror written by Charlie Brooker, he mentioned he was inspired to write it while playing No Mans Sky. I can't remember the name of the episode but essentially a man is running a space sim to torture simulated versions of people he dislikes. Those simulated people break out in the end into our reality. It's never stated in the episode (or maybe it is? been a while), so a lot of people found it stupid and magic when reviewing it, but I think the whole point of it and their escape was to highlight that, oh what we think is the base universe is also simulated too.

I think one of us misunderstands. The travelers are all you... and me. It's all very zen. Ariadne explains this and is possibly the exception. Secondarily the question of the corrupted sentinels is what is corrupting them. I believe the answer is the souls of previous travelers. Also, did they increase the spawns for travelers and graves? I found three in one station and they all had graves on the same planet near each other.

The Overseer is definately sus, especially after everything The Farmer says and then attempts to play off as a joke. I have a feeling "The Voice of Freedom" is just one more name for Void Mother. It even contains all the same letters. As odd as it sounds, I'm not entirely sure that the Abyss's intentions are sinister. I'm under the impression that the Atlas planned to use her as a back-up plan from the start. He created her based on prototypes of the Atlas, placed her within the simulation and allowed the First Spawn to archive her for safekeeping-which was also meant to teach the Sentinels how to archive, and how to alter things with their nanites. It wasn't null who invented the mind arc... according to colossal archive lore, it was the Atlantid. I suspect null is working with the Abyss, now, considering his access to this technology and Laylaps stating: "In the form of Null, the abyss declares a means of escape!" Death-being archived-is the means of escape. It has been repeated by many throughout the entirety of NMS's lore. Of course, the last update is concerning as the hidden message "Void Mother ____???" Leaves enough space for one four-letter word. If the last word is "lied," then everything goes out the window. Also, if The Voice of Freedom is indeed Void Mother, it's concerning that it would call the Atlas a liar, unless she doesn't quite understand her role in the grand scheme.

That's actually a really compelling theory! I don't think the Abyss' intentions are necessarily sinister either, however they are driven by an obsession with self-preservation. I would imagine that instinct comes before helping others, especially since she does seem to need the travelers to pull it off. And you're right! The Atlantid did design the mind arc. Though considering the Korvax called it "beyond computation", I wonder if it was -null- who first figured out how to use it. By the time we meet them, it's been engineered into a simple-to-construct blueprint. Death is considered escape from the Atlas' realities, however they would need something else entirely to escape the fate of the Atlas itself. Perhaps the Atlas did plan everything from the beginning though, seeing as it was designed to simulate futures. However if it knew it needed its creator's soul intact to escape its fate, why would it split it into billions of parts? So many questions... Thanks for watching and for your insight and speculation! P.S. I'm pretty sure the Voice of Freedom is linked to the Abyss as well. Voices singing in harmony? Denying the Atlas? The message about GLASS in the old space station cores? Seems likely.

I'm not entirely sure how the simulation works, but I don't think it is running on an ordinary computer as we know them today. When reconstructing Laylaps, Mercury gives us a Portal Phylactery, which is described as the liquid used by the Atlas to weave the multiverse. This gives me the impression that the simulation has slight physical properties, like a moldable liquid substance. Underneath this layer is the world of glass, which acts similarly to how crystals can be used to store data for a computer. Things that are removed from the simulation layer are stored there. Nanites, however, appear to have been brought into the simulation from outside, likely by the Sentinels, who were given a physical form to allow them to travel between the simulation and the world of glass and transport nanites in and out. Other things-Living Frigates-claim to have originated apart from the simulation as well, indicating it may be possible for physical things to just stumble in and out of the simulation goop. But, nanites specifically, when not contained, seem to have odd effects on things within the simulation. In particular, they seem to make non-organic things become organic. My theory is that the nanites are being distributed throughout the multiverse to convert the simulation into an organic body. The mind-arc will then be used to re-unite all the Travellers into a single mind for that being. As for why the Traveller's soul was divided into so many parts in the first place... I have no clue, other than maybe so that there was someone who could experience each part of the multiverse and keep the simulation alive in their memories.

Nada is not as trust worthy as you might think, due to some logs of the earliest anomaly construct hint how nada and polo caused a full dimensional destruction. in the long all of them are sketchy, its more a matter how you wish to survive past the end of the atlas. this can be found in bunch of derelict frieghter log files.

There is a reality between your own and that which the atlas resides. Which tells me at least, that this universe can be separated from its creator. Perhaps that's the ultimate goal of the Abyss.

This knowledge of the Abyss actually makes me question the honesty and integrity of the Autophage now. They ARE heavily hinted to be fully aware of her and the true nature of Atlantid, to the point of being able to detect some hint of the Void IN YO. And they clearly hold things like Atlantid, Radiant Shards, and Crystalized Hearts in notably high value, things directly tied to the corruption seemingly stemming from the Void Mother. Autophage also seem to have some form of resentment to Sentinels, having one of their quests be to kill some, making their true alignment even more blurred. So the fact they give you trials and the blueprints for such a valuable and unique multi tool now seems less like an inauguration to their ranks, and instead makes their motivation and integrity seem much more dubious than it was at first.

How come there is no mention of the base Overseer? he is the most sketchy character you find and also the first one, even before getting to the Nexus. Hell even your botanists tell you the Overseer might not even be a Geck and decides to stick around to keep an eye on you and your Overseer.

The story of NMS sounds very engaging. But it is told in the worst way. The facts and events are spread out over impossible lengths of time. It uses confusing dialogue. Time does not mean the same thing to the characters as it does to the audience. All this does is lead to a confusing, incomprehensible story. Which is the hallmark of NMS. Who? What? Why? Does it matter? In the end, since NMS seems to have no end, I would say....no.
