It's incredible that the world's largest rodent is biggee that the world's smallest cetaceans. The capibara easly outweighs both the Vaquita and the Franciscana.

I'm from Denver, Colorado, in the USA and can attest to the size of North American Beavers having seen several in our city creeks that fill the Platte River, a sign of successful urban re-wilding.

Another great video! Did you happen upon any info about capybara gestation time or litter size? I'm just wondering if prolific reproduction is part of what helps them thrive in areas with challenging climate and predators.
@alicetremea1798
@alicetremea1798 3 ай бұрын
they have 2-6 babies depending on size, and 150-day gestation. It's hard to know that though, because they raise the litters in a collective manner and you'll se a couple of mums on a stroll with 15 babies at a time (source: South American)
@alicetremea1798
@alicetremea1798 3 ай бұрын
also: not that many predators outside of the Amazon and Pantanal. They reign supreme on Southernmost America (besides being hunted for food sometimes, but they are very fast and put up a fight)

Capybaras are the king of rodents in the Holocene, but in the Miocene and Pliocene(?) they were at best counts with Josephoartigasia monesi (related to the pacarana, it seems) being king and Phoberomys pattersoni its first underling...

can't the accumulation of aquatic vegetation and river sediments also create damed pond habitats similar to those made by beavers? How come their habits made them so invasive in Tierra del Fuego?

I think they need to be in water most of the time to actually feel at home and if they are anything like guinea pigs behaviour wise they will poop wherever so maybe high maintenance and you can't just have one I believe.

*and Australia There might be rodents in Australia now, but they're not native from there.
@b.a.erlebacher1139
@b.a.erlebacher1139 3 ай бұрын
There actually are native rodents in Australia. They descend from small aquatic SE Asian species that rafted over millions of years ago and diversified into terrestrial species as well. Placentals have advantages over marsupials in aquatic habitats, so there was a niche for them to fill. I was surprised to learn about these animals myself. One of them is the rakali.
