The thing in the GP39s favour is that turbocharging helps when working at altitude. The problem there though is that with altitude comes grades, and grades are cruel on B-Bs, so the GP39 was already at a loss vs the SD40 and even the SD39.

I started my railway career on the Western Region in 1990. I often got told that "There's BR, and then there is the WR". The GWR was always an oddball, originally laid in 7ft 1/4inch gauge instead of 4ft 81/2 as all other lines were etc.

I absolutely have a soft spot for the Alco PAs, despite me being British. As a child I had a book of trains around the world - it was mostly pictorial, just with maybe a half page of text for each section. Anyway, in the North American Passenger Trains section there was a picture of a Delaware & Hudson PA-1 running alongside Lake Champlain, and I just thought it was an amazing looking thing.

Having grown up in (southwest) Germany, DB class E40/140 immediately comes to mind. A 4-axle electric locomotive predominantly for freight, conventional electrics, no regenerative or otherwise dynamic brake, without particular issues, built from the 1950s to the 1970s and a good number of them lasted beyond 2000, some are still used by other operators. Longevity means they're not particularly bad, but they are also kind of low-tech and not particularly powerful or fast. Just "sufficient for the average flatland freight train".

The Western Region certainly saw itself as the direct descendent of the Great Western Railway and thus better than the rest of British Rail, a "fact" they revelled in. They enjoyed winding the rest of BR up and rubbing their noses in it to the point that the lead of the Class 52 D1000 was (I kid you not) named "Western Enterprise". I mean why didn't they just unfurl a banner saying "This is us, we' are better than you"? All the class were named in a two part configuration with "Western" followed by another word (so not just regular Enterprise, but Western Enterprise). A couple of highlights that show just how much the Western Region thought of themselves being the aforementioned Enterprise but also Firebrand, Champion, Gladiator, Reliance, Renown, Dominion and Stalwart. In theory all these names were were taken from noble titles, warships and so on. In reality the Western thought they were reflecting themselves. They were actually capable of 100mph working but the ride could become quite violent as their bogies were not really up to it hence they were officially limited to 90mph. Western Stalwart however was known as a fast runner and in "unofficial" speed tests could maintain a 100mph+ average on long runs with heavy 15 car trains. Once useful asset was that like the Warship Class (42/43) they had dual engines and gearboxes. This made them more complex but also meant that they could still move when they suffered a failure. They were also designed on a modular basis so that an engine change and other repairs took a lot less time than their counterparts. Less useful was the lack of Electric Train Heating (ETH) as mentioned elsewhere in this video. They were flawed but were only considered an interim locomotive by the Western Region who had plans for an even bigger, faster variant that should have cured many of the problems associated with the 52's. It was mostly malice from BR that killed them off. They were replaced by the class 50's which while diesel electric were less numerous than the 52's so non-standard themselves. It is also notable that BR later went back to hydraulic transmission, reintroduced dual engines on the HST and made modularity standard in all new types showing the Western actually were really ahead of the curve. In many respects the Westerns represented the final hurrah for the old GWR and lineage from Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

Spoken like a true Western enthusiast... I loved them; the noise they made, and with a traction effort to make a "47" weep, they were awesome. The other advantage that you touched upon was that on the testing Devon and Cornwall stretches, they could limp to Newton Abbott or Plymouth Laira if they developed a problem. When they were superceded by the hideous class 50 "Hoovers", they frequently double-headed them - in case! Loved watching the "Warships " and "Hymeks" too...!

People seem to stereotype that the 244 was an unreliable prime mover yet the Southern, a railway that didn't purchase any new ALCOs after the first-generation, kept a sizeable fleet of 244-powered RS-3s running into the early-mid 70s after many other railroads had stopped running them altogether (L&N did similarly but they also had second-generation ALCOs and ran some into the early 80s). Although there's no denying that EMDs are built rugged, ALCOs could definitely hold their own when cared for as seen with many other minority diesels that have kept their keep after bigger railroads spun them off decades ago. Regarding the PA, I would say a bigger issue was that they used a less common 16-244 compared to the more common 12-244 along with reaching the end of most of their leases around the same time that passenger services nationwide were declining heavily thus giving less reason for railroads to keep them around (E-units did tend to stick around with some lasting into Amtrak, but they were similarly worn if not more by then) Although the GP-39 itself didn't sell that well, it did serve as a good base for the 39-2 given their altitude performance and related fuel economy as the 70s saw fuel costs rise plus gave EMD a direct horsepower comparable locomotive to the GE U23B developed around the same time

The reason why British Rail Western Region went with diesel Hydraulics is because of the Dawlish coastline (The Railway between Exeter and Newton Abbot that ran along the coast on a seawall) which often ran through heavy swells and ALOT of water. Hydraulics are useful as they don't suffer "electrical problems" when the get wet. (Unlike diesel-electrics which regularly do break down currently on this line.) The management of the Western Region wanted locos that could work even when saturated in seawater. Hence the class 35, 42, 52's. British Rail in their short sightedness simply wanted "standardisation", and clearly not reliability!
@Trainman10715
@Trainman10715 2 жыл бұрын
While that is correct, it was only ever a theory that diesel electrics would break down at the touch of seawater, br went for standardisation once it became apparent that diesel electrics were generally fine with the sea water. Look at the diesel electric HSTs for example, there're videos of them being absolutely battered by waves at Dawlish and yet still working perfectly

From what I've read, the major issues with the Q2, beyond those already discussed, were that they were extremely thirsty. Additionally, one of the major driving ideas behind duplexes in general was to increase speed potential by reducing dynamic augment. However, the speed limits on the Pennsy prevented the Q2s from really taking much advantage of this. At the speeds allowed for freight along most of the lines they worked, they didn't perform that much better than a J1.

The GP39s only problem was it was turbo charged, which really helped at altitude. The cost of maintaining the turbo was why more weren't sold. But when fuel became more expensive the GP39-2 came into being as it was more fuel efficient than a GP38-2. The PRR Q2 had the problem that they only were ever operated a medium speeds. If they had been bought by the UP and used where the Big Boy's were, they probably would have been very efficient and quite powerful as they could achieve and maintain full power more often.

I'm not sure I'd say the ALCo PA model was "average" on the Espee. Espee loved the PAs in many assignments where they found EMD Es not satisfsctory--such as the Shasta Daylight. As delivered the Shasta had EMD E7s, but harsh tunnel conditions and grades soon favored the PAs for this service. The PAs were the preferred passenger power from Oakland and railroad east to Portland and Ogden. The Espee Es were mostly relegated to LA, though some notable exceptions in the Bay such as the Queen Mary. In total, Southern Pacific Lines (SSW/T&NO/SP) had 52 PA1/PB1 and PA2/PB2. The UP didn't care much for the PA design and only rostered 8. The Santa Fe had 28. If I'd say there was an "average" design, I'd point to the ALCo FA or the unibiquitois EMD F or later GP7/GP9s. The locomotives that broke steam were excellent and became the new average.

This I can get behind, a loco I may suggest for the next episode would be the Midland Railway of Western Australia (MRWA) F class, built to replace their fleet of steam locomotives in the 1950’s and are strikingly similar to the BR Class 20. They were under the ownership of WAGR post 1964 when MRWA was merged/bought by WAGR and continued to operate until the 1980’s. They weren’t the greatest in the world nor were they the worst, so it would suit the list

Most of the diesel hydraulics were actually pretty good, not just the 52s, but the Warships and the hymeks, what the 52s lost in grunt at the top end, they gained in the way hydraulic transmission puts power on the road, meaning they would accelerate like a bat out of Hell. The fact that BR went over to Hydraulic transmission for many of their Diesel Multiple units in the 80s makes you wonder if dispensing on the Western region's big locos was as much of a good idea as they thought. The Western region, or what it has become, can still be a bit rebelious74 years after the company which is the route of that rebelious nature ceased to exist

That BR locomotive reminds me of those "we stick to..." opinions that exist in every field. To remain on topic: Germany has "always" more or less stuck to diesel-hydraulic traction (within diesel, obviously) and the Netherlands (where I live) is diesel-electric country, like the UK. (Yes, the Netherlands have had their diesel-hydraulic stock, most of the remaining ones sold to Poland.) A similar "matter of opinion" may have existed with steam engines: compound or not. (I wonder if there's a topic in these regional differences.)

The first of those engines being the Great Eastern Railway A55, built purely to prove steam locomotives could get to 30mph in 30 seconds and nothing else. It barely lasted a few years, being rebuilt as an 0-8-0 and scrapped regardless. The other was "Big Bertha", the banking engine on the lickey Incline. Built in 1919, she led an average career shoving trains up the Lickey, being withdrawn in 1956 and being replaced by a 2-10-0.

The Centurion was becoming a bit of a blunt instrument, so the "Chiefy" was an attempt to make a MBT with a few more bells and whistles on it. The problem was, at the time, there, frankly wasn't enough new bells and whistles to incorporate into the new design, so the poor "Chiefy" looked like an unnecessary and ham-fisted re-jig of the Centurion concept. Luckily, most Tankies (but not all!) loved the Chiefy, and to say that some considered it a bit of a stopgap, it's not exactly annoyingly average, more an amazing unit that didn't stand a chance, in this case because that innovation hadn't gone far enough ahead to justify the complete re-design that was the Chiefy.

The PA series of locomotives were beautiful. The GP39 really was a good locomotive as the GP39-2 was owned by Santa Fe, Delaware and Hudson, MKT, BN and the Reading who needed good locomotives that were fuel efficient and the turbos were helpful in higher elevations used by the Santa Fe.

And how much horsepower from the 12 cylinder engine in the GP39 without the turbocharger? MARC Maryland commuter rail has 6 GP39 units originally built as GP40s. Delaware & Hudson bought 4 PA units from Santa Fe, New York state paid to have em rebuilt for Montreal train service in the 1970s, by 1977 the mix of railroad owned equipment on an Amtrak train was replaced with new Rohr Turboliners and ridership on the NY-Albany-Montreal route sort of quadrupled.

That's a nice idea actually, I'd be up for seeing that. Question is, what would the tiers be and would we include the Standards or just stick with diesels and electric? And how far would we go, all the way to privatisation? That would mean a good 50 years of trains to choose from.

Though, for the case of the Pennsylvania railroad's Duplexes, the Q2 and Prototype T1 are the best ones out of the others that Pennsylvania Railroad had(Q2, Prototype T1> S1, Q1, Production T1). By the way, Incase you might not know, Japan did had some Streamlined steam locomotives(mainly streamlined Variants of the C53 and C55). C63 was never built, but, the Number plate is at a museum.

More ideas would be experimental or prototype airplanes that proved their own worth, what vehicle proposals or variants that should have been made, vehicles with the greatest platform flexibility, old vehicles that are completely impossible to upgrade any further after having received upgrades (like Panzer 4), no longer manufactured vehicles that conceptually could still become better (like the Pennsylvania T1; though there is a replica being made for that currently), vehicles that introduced specific features or were the last to have the specific features prominently, features that never made sense for war vehicles, vehicles that deserve functioning replicas, buildings that were given better purposes later in life, vehicles that lead to a significant change in any industry, and even vehicles that carried a significant piece of equipment or cargo that lead to an important event.

i dont think it's fair to put the PA on this list since it's only downfall was the lack of expertise maintenance crews held because EMD had a monopoly. by default, the ALCos are more reliable because they're 4 stroke rather than 2 stroke, and the D&H had them until the 70s when it was bought out (30 years of service is a long time for a covered wagon). the secondary downfall of the PA was the 244 engine, which was a great engine, albiet not a high horsepower engine. the 244 was rushed into production to replace the 539 and 539T, and as a result couldn't handle much power (see tale of the RSD-7 demos for details on this).
