Minecraft is an open world sandbox game with god like editing abilities, people keep calling it a sandbox exclusively or an open world exclusively, and also people don’t entirely get the difference between open world and sandbox Actual meanings: Sandbox: you can edit or change the world Open world: you have a lot of land to cover Misconceptions: Sandbox: open world Open world: you can edit the environment This one drives me insane, some people don’t know the difference between open world and sandbox and thus think they are the same thing. Ark survival evolved is a half sandbox with a small open world Subnautica is the same but with a larger open world but less item diversity The sims is a half sandbox Horizon zero is open world

imagine the processing power wasted to keep it loaded at all times as compared to the same visuals, but rerendering partially. it is obviously more effective or they wouldnt do it and older games did it this way like ocarina of time. your fog of war was a solution, but people like myself hated it overall; wanted to see as far as possible. even minecraft on a medium machine (at least referring to when i had done this a few years back) with optifine render distance maxed would bog down a ton, like to 10% original perfomance. that's why they do it this way a lot now. the data is still all there like referring to enemies and such, but just not the visuals.

The second point is that on average linear games are shorter and more cohesive and since my mom would buy me around 3 games a year, buying a linear game during the summer meant finishing it in 2-3 days and going back to not having anything to play. Open world's just prolonged the experience for me.

I spent far too much time doing this on Assassin's Creed Odyssey, because you could get some AMAZING shots, especially on some of the smaller, lesser explored islands in the Aegean like Kos & Samos. I just love exploring in games which is a massive reason I gravitate (very heavily) towards open world games. Well, that and the fact that I hate invisible walls.
@TheSpongyMallard5 жыл бұрын
I really wish the "bigger = better" was no longer thing for publishers. Ubisoft is king of this. The maps just get bigger and bigger, but they never really get better. They actually get worse IMO. Odyssey and Origins have some good and well thought out quest, but the majority are filler "side" content to make the world feel lived in, but they actually don't. I believe Ghost Recon: Wildlands the the nest example of open world and a really big one at that, being bad for that type of game. I feel like Bethesda so far has done the best open worlds because they aren't really that big and the activities are good enough to make it feel lived in. It also helps that you will constantly be going back to other locations, but in a believable way. Ubisoft and Assassin's Creed have from the start done open worlds badly. Once you are done with a particular area, you have zero reason to return to it, thus making it an open world game, kinda pointless.

Personally, I love games that try to be realistic in their sizes and distances. Example... even if I like Skyrim, I hate the fact the "cities" are little more than tiny villages and the villages are not even that, are hamlets, or whatever else we decide to call them. Really... look at the numbers of inhabitants at Skyrim cities: Riverwood: 17. Falkreath: 20. Morthal: 23. Winterhold: 29 Dawnstar: 33. Windhelm: 56 Riften: 58. Solitude: 62. Markarth: 65. Whiterun: 74. Which is why I love Daggerfall so much. Then people complain Daggerfall feels empty and generic, and they complain that it's because it's procedurally generated. People who say that base their opinions on old tech, without realizing that you can procedurally generate big areas based on PREVIOUSLY established macro details, as well as you can adjust both the macro details AND adjust micro details later, include other stuff, etc. I think it's actually quite ridiculous to have the density of interesting stuff next to each other as we see in most rpgs. It's not realistic. And you CAN create a system that is both open world and keeps you interested. Instead of travelling everywhere in real time, you could either do it in real time and be bored (like in the real world or Daggerfall) or a fast travel system based on maps and/or distance from keypoints. so you travel from place to place in fast travel using roads, but when passing close by a structure or landmark, it becomes first person again. So you can explore the area. Or not.

except at the end of the day, that's not how one would describe an open world game, an open world game at it's core is a game in which you can travel without loading screens (or few loading screens on older games), GTA V, open world, Farcry 5, open world, Fallout 4, open world, an Open World game is just a game, with an open world, Open World RPG, is a game where you have an open world and a major story that the player can influence (Skyrim, Fallout 4, Farcry 5), Open World Story Teller is a game that's an open world with a story in which the player can not influence (Horizon Zero Dawn) and Open World Sandbox, is a game set in an open world, which allows the player to create and destroy the world to their whims (Minecraft, Terraria) the term Open World is just how the world is set and built, no different to how one would describe an action game/movie

The main open world myth that drives me nuts is one of the ones you mentioned: "Bigger is better". I recall there was quite a fad for a while where so many games were bragging about how huge their open worlds were. A huge open world isn't always a good open world though. Big, empty open worlds just make things dull; you can only enjoy the pretty graphics for so long before you start seeing the size as an obstacle to fun rather than contributing to fun.

Origins and Odyssey have significantly larger worlds than the previous games, but all the activities are also spread out - and that's a good thing, since if it was as densely packed as say, AC2, it would just turn into a huge grind where you'd either have to spend several hours clearing each little area (out of the 30-40 that the game offers), or just give up on trying to complete it altogether and just focus on main story.

I think it was intentionally left empty because it only highlights the fact that the place is a "forbidden land" and therefore aren't any other living creatures except for lizards and turtles. If I'm right that's really good thinking from the developers side!

Open world myth - You need to do every quest to beat the game. Or some variation of this. Skyrim was a perfect example. I've met a lot of people who didn't want to play it because it would have taken to much time to do everything or felt cheated because they couldn't do everything in other games like Fallout 3 where you make choices (like blowing up megaton) that prevented you from also making that other choice. A lot of design thought goes into the fact that not everyone is going to choose the same direction, not everyone is going to experience the same quests. If can make the "story" of the game drastically different as if it was completely different game. I don't think this little view point gets enough light shed on it because of those misconceptions.

On your first point, I totally agree. The barren and mostly empty wastes of The Capital and The Mojave helped to drive home the sadness, desperation, and frankly pure freedom of the Wasteland left in Fallout's world. Finding anything, even something trying to kill you, was an adventure. Fallout 4's Commonwealth was honestly so cluttered I felt claustrophobic and had trouble getting into it.

I feel number 4 on the loading is important as depend on what the game contains and what your computer has can ultimately affect game performance. For example, I was playing Grand Theft Auto Online and every single time I go from one end of the map to the other end I would experience 100 parts of lag lasting for 2 seconds or have 5 parts lasting 10 minutes.

The linear / non linear example applies to Metro and Fallout. Both are my favourite series but they are very different in how they are played. Metro Exodus succeded in making a very atmospheric sandbox level but still following a linear campaign, and I'm glad they didn't make it fully open world because it would've ruined the feeling of having to move on in order to reach the objective

Better a linear world with a compelling story and narrative than a open world sparsely populated; with too many repeating quests or Computer generated quests. That's my opinion 🤟
@7dayspking5 жыл бұрын
Linear and open world are not antonyms. Dragon age origins is quite non linear, even with it's sandbox elements the actual story of RDR2 is extremely linear and given more attention than you'll find in many linear games without an open world. You also clearly don't understand how objectives or quests are designed.

To use another Zelda example: Most Zelda games are semi - open world games as well. In Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask you can see almost all destinations in the distance. However, they are only crude LODs (like cardboard cutouts) with the purpose to visually guide you. And you can only access them by moving from zone to zone.

I like the Yakuza word, it's expanding word based on story line in that game, imagine playing a game that you start as a boy, then the next sequel you play as teenagers and so on until you play as middle ages, start from a city and then go to neighbor city, and keep adding new city in the next game while still keep the previous city but add all the changes during all those years,... somehow you feel nostalgic when you visit the first city when you already middle ages

For the most part, the bigger the open world the more you can explore & do stuff ( be it quests or goofing off) in. I say for the most part because theres one example that comes to mind of a game with a huge open world that isnt good at all because of how its rigid gameplay mechanics interfere. This particular game? No Man’s Sky or as the more apt & satirized name calls it: One Man’s Lie. Before you comment something like: “ The add ons made it better.” Or something like that, let me remind you that the gameplay mechanics is mainly wandering around looking for things to mine very slowly & in massive quantities so as to repair damaged equipment or parts on your ship & refuel both of them as well before being able to free roam around for a very small amount of time before having to do so again. Speaking of examples, a great example of an open world game that blocks off areas till a certain point in time is Arkham Knight. You have to wait till youre tracking the vehicle that the Knight takes Barbara in to get to the point in which you head to a location to get the bridge to Miagani lowered. Then you wait till the point where you bring in the Battank to tank out the Cobra squadron guarding the missile launcher on Founders to get that bridge lowered. But in spite of this, theres still a lot to do in the regions & thus it doesnt get too boring. While I agree that there are some good linear games ( some of my favorites being the LiS franchise), Id say that open world games provide more replay-ability value as after the story is done, you can ( for the most part [ an exception being Arkham Knight given the Knightfall protocol]), continue playing the game without having to delete & replace a save file to do so. Finally, you forgot to mention what games that use some of your points or others could be, due to doing so, be considered the best open world games. For me the best ones are ( & this is of 10/2018 & its subject to be updated) ( also for the most part in random order): the Crew, the Crew 2, Middle Earth Shadow of War, AC IV: Black Flag, GTA V 2. Watch Dogs 2 1. Just Cause 3 And yes, before you ask, I am anticipating that Id need to update this list when Just Cause 4 releases.

Yeah, but i would say NMS is more Sandbox than open world, and if you judge only by launch then its certainly bad. Having played it both at launch and the most recent iteration, i almost didn't know the newest version was the same game. Which creates an entirely different discussion on whether bad games can be redeemed with actual hard work being put into them that i won't get into here.

I think what makes an open world and open world is not how it loads, but rather the sense that it gives you that it doesn't load. There are all sorts of Tricks developers can do to achieve this feeling, and as far as I know none of them actually have the entire world load all at once. Even Grand Theft Auto V loads areas separately. there's been a number of times I've been moving across the landscape so fast that the game had to stop and buffer a bit as it tried to finish loading the next area I was heading to

Hold up, with regards to #1, don't get open world confused with nonlinearity. I've played (semi) linear open world games and true nonlinear ones, and I've played all types of linearity in old-school "closed world" games. I may be co-opting terminology here, but when I do it, it is to demarcate. So trust me. But yes, I agree: I consider Arkham Asylum to be the best Batman experience over its sequels and prequels, precisely because it is so tightly-woven, focused and altogether novel. The OW nature of the other games permitted me to dick around too much like it was a GTA game, which took the pressure away from finishing the game in its entirety.
@Ddarke115 жыл бұрын
Sparse is a much better and correct term than empty, particularly for RDR. Something that is very much needed to convey that sense of authenticity of that particular environment yet still had amazing world building populated with little things that gave it life. Obviously it's going to be a stark difference from something like the more urban areas of the GTA series.
