Great video! I am a 11 year ostomate and also a Stealth belt customer. The Stealth belt changed my life for travel, vacationing and swimming making it convenient and less obvious that you have had the surgery. I myself was happy to be alive and able to carry on with normal life. I recently developed a parastoma hernia and now going to deal with that.

Hi, I'm looking for information on prolapse stomas, I'm going back to see the surgical team in October but need help now, your information on hernia prevention was great, i was an emergency operation so no preop, just a sign this and tomorrow we operate. 😮

Hi im getting a total colectomy in 2 weeks. Improvise adapt overcome right? I have my ostomy location appointment in 2 days. Is there anything i need to ask at my ostomy location appointment? In my experience if I dont ask, nurses tend to do just the bare minimum. My surgeon wants me to drink nestle impact recovery drink x3 a day 5 days prior to surgery. I understand the benefits of it as ive drank it before my first surgery but it has 19g sugar per drink. I cant find any sugar free versions. Do you know of any alternatives or do I need to just suck it up and drink the poison? Should I be drinking Juven pre/post opp also? Thanks Chris, an active 38 yr old male

There are sugar free shakes from a brand called OWYN (stands for only what you need) that are a bit more tolerable for some people. For further advice you'll have to consult with your medical team, but check out ostomy.org for nutritional advice you can bring up at your next appointment.

@STEALTHBELT im in hospital now recovering at ohsu. They want me to drink ensure surgery immunonutrition drink but it has 18g of sugar. That doesnt seem like you should be putting (artificial sugar)poison into your body after surgery?

​@@sicwititdimeful studies related to artificial sweeteners are inconclusive. Some studies show correlated negative effects, but this is typically going to involve ingesting artificial sweeteners at high quantities for long periods of time. I would trust the judgement of your clinicians for the time being - and also note that sugar itself isn't 'bad' to have occasionally or circumstantially. For instance, if you are doing cardio or exercise, taking in sugar will be a benefit for you. In the video when I say to avoid sugary drinks, it was really to say "avoid an excess of sugary drinks". Also, on a more general note, nutritional studies of any kind should always be viewed with some skepticism. In order to make a scientific study more reliable, you have to control for and reduce confounding variables as much as possible. Dietary studies in particular are incredibly complex and have a lot of factors that can skew results, making it very difficult to repeat and validate results. This also means that there are a lot of studies in the nutritional science space that are in direct conflict with one another. Because of this, you should always look to licensed professionals to help you understand the nutritional and dietary needs.
