Otto Graham played in a league (not the NFL) with only 6-7 other teams for the first 4 years of his career. When he got to the NFL he actually threw more interceptions than TDs. He also played in a largely segregated era on a stacked team so no, Otto Graham is not on the same tier as Montana, Brady, Marino and Manning. The first 4 years in the AAFC they played lousy teams like the Miami Seahawks and the Los Angeles Dons. They only had a one game playoff. Period. He had Hall of Famer Marion Motley - the greatest fullback who ever lived - who AVERAGED 6 YARDS PER CARRY over his career (7 in the playoffs) and was the league's leading rusher. he also had Lou Groza (HOF) AND A NUMBER OF OTHER ALL-PROS ON OFFENSE. Oh yeah, and the #1 defense in the league for 10 STRAIGHT SEASONS!!!!!

“You’re only as good as good as your time and your peers and he dominated his era.” Such a true statement. The greatest players of all time are the people who dominated their eras the most as you can only be as good as the time you were born limits you with whatever knowledge, technology, training techniques, records, etc. that were present at the time. No other quarterback dominated their era like Otto Graham. People are always arguing who is the best quarterback of the current era whether its Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees but there is no argument over who was the best quarterback in Otto’s era as he was so much better than his competition which is why I think he’s the greatest.

Exacatically. I saw him mentioned on a list of the best QBs of all time, and upon seeing his stats for the era was thinking: "wow, I gotta check out some film of this guy". Upon seeing said film I'm even more impressed, as he looks so much better than his competition of the era it's ridiculous. Completely modern. A true football pioneer!

The GOAT. 10 years, 10 Championship Games, 7 Champtionship wins. Also still hold the record for average yards gained per pass attempt at 9.0 yards. The guy actually threw the ball downfield in an era that wasn't catered to QBs and WRs. Otto would have had to spike the ball 200 times for an active QB to surpass his yards per attempt record.
@nobodyaskedbut
@nobodyaskedbut 6 жыл бұрын
Graham is the GOAT and it's not close. He played 10 seasons and went to 10 straight title games and won SEVEN of them. He led his league in passer rating 5 times, yds passing 5x, Y/A 5x, TDP 3x, Int% 4x and comp.% 4x. Until last year he held the all-time record for rush TDs by a pro QB with 44. His all-time career record of Y/A is an incredible 9.0 (most coaches will tell you that's the most telling stat). He and his incomparable coach Paul Brown created the modern offense which is still used today as opposed to copying them which is what all others have done for the last 60 yrs. He played at the top level as a passer, ball-carrier, playmaker, leader and winner. One would be hard pressed to name another QB with that description.

One (like me) can make a great case for JB being the greatest American athlete of all-time. When you take it all in consideration it's pretty much a toss-up for greatest in football between Otto & JB but I would give the edge to JB. There is a good case for one franchise, THE BROWNS, owning the greatest player, QB, RB and coach in pro football history.

It is difficult to say which quarterbacks are the greatest. The game has changed so much. The skillset required to win has changed. All you can say is that when he played, he got the Brown to the championship game every year. How else do you define greatness? After Otto retired, the Browns got Jim Brown (hands down the GOAT running back) and, yet, the same team could not win a championship. They only won in 1964 after Otto left.

Keep in mind that during this era the defenders could do virtually anything to the receivers before the ball was in the air and the D could do everything and anything to the QB and teams like the Lions took full advantage of that against Graham. In addition, the ball was closer to a rugby ball than the one used today which, of course, made it more difficult to throw and catch.

How about just 5 straight and win at least 2 of them. That is Graham's worst winning 5 year stretch of his career. Oh, and be the best play maker and passer, too. Then there's the fact that he wouldn't have a chance to win the title if his team finished with the 4TH best W-L record in his conference which is what did happen in this past season.

This is frankly kinda dumb. Otto Graham absolutely did not play in Superbowls,it was a like 8 team league and there only a couple playoff games back then,frankly a much more fair comparison is just winning the championship game (the one that gets you into the Superbowl)and even that is probably more impressive as it just has a lot less asterisks. Otto Graham & Jim Brown are the only players in pro football history to accomplish all of the following during their careers: (1) Play in every scheduled game while leading their teams to a winning record in every season of their career AND (2) Averaged the equivalent (rush TD = 1 TD / TDP or TDR = 1/2 TD) of one TD per scheduled career game AND (3) Finished with career averages of over 8.0 pass Y/A at QB or over 5.0 rush Y/A at RB. These feats put them both head & shoulders above all other players in the history of pro football. In case you're wondering, Tom Brady did not match any of the 3 achievements and not even in his 1st ten seasons.

Not 10 "NFL" Championships. His...and the Browns'...first FOUR Championship wins were in the AAFC, a rival league to the NFL. That is the main reason he doesn't get as much credit for his accomplishments today as he otherwise would have. The AAFC existed for just four years and the Cleveland Browns with Otto as their QB won the AAFC Championship game in all four of those seasons. That level of domination is what got them accepted into the NFL in 1950. Most NFL teams thought of the Browns as a joke because they were coming from the "lesser" AAFC into the NFL. Well, the Browns with Otto as their QB WON the NFL Championship their first year in the NFL...1950. But they then made it to, and LOST, the next three NFL Championship games in 1951, 1952 and 1953 before finally winning the Championship again in 1954 and 1955, which was Otto's last year in the NFL. If Otto and the Browns had won even just ONE more of those Championship games from '51-'53, I think he'd be more highly respected.

What people today don't understand is that more teams and players is not better. In fact it's worse. More means watered down. Before expansion players like Graham performed in what would be called today an elite, all-star or champions league. There were far fewer poor players and teams. Almost all opponents were top echelon because there was fewer openings (and the rosters were smaller).
@stevem7606

Someone finally gets it. Additionally when the AAFC merged with the NFL a "special draft" was held which allowed existing NFL teams to pick over the AAFC teams and get each teams best players to combine with their best. If you look at the All Pro games there was a near equal smattering of ex AAFC players and NFL players. If you played back then you were playing all-star football.

A stat and a story illustrate Graham's greatness. The stat is his career record of 105-17-4. The story is the tale of Cleveland's first NFL game. NFL commissioner Bert Bell, a former Eagles executive, sent Cleveland to Philadelphia with the expectation that the reigning NFL champs would welcome Cleveland to the league with a good thrashing. Cleveland won 35-10.

Great player for his day... but come on there was like 16 black players in his LEAGUE... slow footed Defensive backs who were built to tackle (because most teams ran 80%). His team was hand built as players were recruited for the 1st season (no draft till year 2 and even then TWO rounds) the Browns had Paul Brown so it was easy choice where the good players would go. Anyway Great athlete on a stacked team Dominated ? say it ain't so. He couldn't sniff the field today.

As a NFL History NERD, I appreciate them acknowledging Otto Graham, but he doesn't belong in the Top 10 QB convo. You had to have played part of your career in the SB Era

Remember the era. Almost everyone threw more interceptions than TDs. The year the Browns entered the NFL, the average for a team was about 17 TDs and 26 INTs in a 12-game season.

Pedro Martinez first of all playing on a good team doesn't take away his accomplishments. Same thing with aikman, smith and Irvin and the Great Wall of Dallas. Is hard to argue who made who better. The thing with Otto graham is he played against good nfl teams and performed like a hall of famer. He actually beat three superior nfl teams in seven of his championships. Browns got jim brown after Otto graham retired and how many championship did the browns won???????? Graham revolutionized the quarterback position and his status from that era is defintally can be regarded one of the best of all time.

Yes, it was segregated, but there's also his career completion % that's STILL in the top 30, though few QBs even completed half their passes then, let alone looking like modern QBs, which he alone did then. The other best QBs of his era tend to look like average FCS college QBs of today. The only way one can compare players of different eras is how good they were compared to others of their era. And Graham was more dominant than any.

Didn't Montana, Marino and Manning play in eras with linemen who could use their hands to pass block and receivers who couldn't be hit past five yards? And the NFL thought the AAFC was a joke league too until the Browns entered the NFL by clobbering the defending champion Eagles in their first game and then winning the championship. Graham won over 80% of his games. Also, the Browns suffered their only losing season between 1946-1973 the year after Otto Graham retired in 1956 which shows how important he was to that team. Paul Brown never won another championship without him despite acquiring Jim Brown in 1957.

Patriots bandwagon. Otto was way better. Tom Brady has 5 championships, Otto has 7. Tom Brady’s yard per attempt average is nowhere near Graham’s. Graham’s yards per attempt was 9. And how many times was Otto Graham crying to the refs because he got touch.
