I think his explanation makes the most sense - once you’ve thrown that much, you’re probably winning comfortably so why risk the franchise QB. Except for those couple times when 500+ passing yards was a necessity because you were playing catch-up. And he made a point to say that this was an era when you could basically hit the receiver the entire way down the field. But also in the era before anybody played a zone, or any other complex defense. I watch these old films and often times, a receiver only has to get free from 1 guy and he’s gone. Eventually defenses caught up with how to keep the passing game in check.

The fact that guys like Marino, Moon, Manning, Brady, Fouts, Brees, Rodgers, etc. haven't broken this record is astounding. You'd think in the current era where the TD pass record has been broken three times in less than ten years, 3,500 passing yards is average, three guys throw for 5,000 in the same season, and one guy has thrown for 5,000+ FIVE times, you'd imagine that someone would've hit 560 in a game a long time ago. Mr. Brocklin hit 554 in a time when passing was essentially a gimmick.

brady in the superbowl against the eagles in 2017 would have broke it. He had 505 yards and if someone would have caught the hail mary at the end of the game which was like 57 yards away from the end zone he would have broke it from that play and if they tied it. It would have went to overtime and brady very likely would have had over 600 yards passing in that game. Absolutely crazy to think about

My dad told me about this game. As I recall the story NVB had Elroy Hirsch and Tom Fears as the ends and Vitamin Smith, a pretty good receiver out of the backfield. All three great receivers. I believe they also had an all rookie O- Line. Pretty amazing accomplishment.

Because, as the video said, the Patriots were up a lot. They won that game 59-0, after Brady threw for 5 TDs in the second quarter alone, and was taken out of the game in the third quarter to avoid getting hurt.

Van Brocklin's record will ALWAYS stand, just like Johnny U's 47-straight games with a TD. The pathetic rules today make passing stats watered down and meaningless. When Van Brocklin set the 554 yards passing record, Offensive Linemen couldn't grasp or encircle the Defensive players, or else it was holding; Defenders could clothesline receivers, QBs could get piledriven without a penalty being called, and "pass interference" was basically non-existent

Am I right in saying that the New York team were in some sort of crisis, maybe financial, and had to recruit players including in the secondary, at the last minute? If so it doesn't detract from NVB's achievement but it maybe goes somewhat to explaining a stat that looks incredibly out of kilter with it's era. Warren Moon did his 537 against the KC Chiefs who had several probowlers in their secondary. And he could have broken the record easily but the Oilers (I miss the Oilers!) chose to run out the clock on their last possession.

The AFL merged into the NFL...so only NFL records count...This Record was set when there was no AFL or any other Pro League btw. It would be like the XFL merges into the NFL and then you whine how it is BS that XFL records don't count...that is how the AFL was looked at when it first started.
