In the run up to it release, we had the digital posters of the film that also played the trailer under it. It had the scene of the German commanded with face all ripped up. I had to tell the manager that it should be removed as could upset the younger children who visited the cinema. It did, but only after about a 2 weeks. Luckily we didn't get any complaints about it.

I think some of these failed because mainstream audiences just avoided the "american beautiful mid-30s playing teens making stupid choices in horror movie" premise in the late 2000s - early 2010s, so these actually became niche for horror buffs. Good list. We saw all of these in the theater except Overlord. Ironically, it might be my favorite movie on this particular list. Between Overlord and The Ruins. I LOVED The Ruins upon first watch. I'm a gore hound but this was definitely a little more aggressive than I thought it would be. I liked Dead Silence but it just wasn't quite what I expected. Lots of good atmosphere. Touristas wasn't quite as good as I had hoped but I'd give it a thumbs up. It feels more realistic than the Hostel movies though I must admit, I'd have to say I enjoyed the first two Hostel movies more than Touristas. My Soul To Take... I dunno. I love Craven so I hate to hate on any of his movies. I think the general idea was pretty decent and it looked pretty good, but the most of the acting is just pretty sub par and the pacing wasn't and I figured it out pretty early. There were some moments with decent emotion. I hated reading some of the reviews when it was released. It is definitely better than the reviews. Craven had an enviable career but... I wish My Soul To Take was better. Having said that, I'd still recommend giving it a watch. I'd just put it in a distant last place on this list.

I remember hearing about most of these around their releases, except for My Soul To Take. I think The Cobwebs Channel recently covered Dead Silence, but I might be confusing the reviewer, can't remember exactly. I remember when Blade Runner 2049 released and did the same as the first, earning just less than its cost. While that may sound disappointing, I read at the time that the repeat performance could very well secure the film as better than a blockbuster because it would become a cult classic. I think the same can be said of any mainstream film that doesn't become a smash hit, because a film doesn't need to be a monetary success to be enjoyable, and people watch films to be entertained.

I remember reading an interview with Wes Craven done after My Soul to Take had come out. He said they didn't have a trailer for it till a week before release. That probably didn't help. I saw Overlord on the day it came out and thoroughly enjoyed it. Didn't get much publicity beforehand though. I don't recall a trailer appearing till about two months before the release. And that was the first I'd heard of it. With 3d; I chose to see Avatar in 2d. I saw Alice in Wonderland in 3d because it was the only option on the day I went to it. I loved the experience. Then in due course I saw clash of the Titans. Which I think was a conversion. And that put me off. It doesn't help that I'm short sighted and colour blind so I don't think the whole thing really worked with my eyesight. I put the glasses on over my normal glasses. I know someone else who wears glasses and they tried them after taking their glasses off. And didn't like the experience either. I recall watching the first Captain America in 2011 in 2d and seeing some bits that had clearly been set up to be effective in 3d. Had to see Dredd in 3d as it didn't get a 2d release. Which is probably one reason it didn't do well enough for a sequel. I saw Gravity for the second time in 2014 in an extreme experience. Which was big screen stereo sound 3rd. The sound was amazing but even so, never bothered with 3d since. Of all I did see in 3d, I never saw one where the 3d enhanced the story. So it just seemed pointless to me.

It clearly showed that James Wan was anything but a one-trick pony filmmaker.

Hey, Cecil. I've seen all five films on the list, and the only one I didn't care for was Turistas. I should give it a rewatch and see if my opinion has changed after almost two decades. The Ruins is hands-down the best on the list, and if anyone hasn't read the book, they should. It's equally as good. This is before they blew up in the MCU and The Purge franchise, and The Waking Dead and Black Panther, respectively.

The thing with Overlord: at one time it was theorized to be another film in the slowly growing Cloverfield Franchise. And when the trailers seemed to deny that idea, it further spun into a sort of “Nazi Zombies” film unrelated to the World At War Zombies property (yes, not the WWII Knock Off version). Back then it wasn’t appreciated for trying something somewhat different with the genre and I believe stuff like that deserves a chance again.

I think what also hurt Turistas was that it was a bit similar to Hostel with the difference being that the characters were not killed by wealthy elites for the fun of it, but so their organs could be sold on the black market.

I love all these movies especially The Ruins and Overlord, Wyatt Russell is doing his Sci-Fi/Horror/Action roots proud
