I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for an organ donor. I wouldn’t have survived past 2009. I had lost all,of my intestines, both small and large. A person can live without a colon, but small bowels are vital for hydration and nutrition. Without small intestines, I couldn’t even absorb water and needed IV infusions of TPN 24 hours a day. Even with the TPN, the doctor said I wouldn’t survive more than 18 months, but an infection was the greatest risk. I nearly died twice from sepsis, a systemic infection where every cell on the body is infected. I probably wouldn’t survive a third. I had a full intestinal transplant in 2010. There were complications after that I shouldn’t have survive, but somehow I did. I have only had the last 14 years thanks to that transplant and the person who had donated his organs.

A few years ago, I watched a documentary on the Fifth Estate on when death is pronounced, and how different the parameters are from country to country, and even by state/province. It's much trickier than you would think. I was a medical professional, although not in a profession directly involved in patient care. I was surprised. People being pronounced dead and then not really being dead isn't common, but it's not unheard of. For Julia's case, this seems to be a function of her home country. In N America, power windows automatically go down if any pressure is sensed. This safety feature was implemented decades ago, after numerous cases of children killed in the same way.
