First time I stayed in Japan I only knew like 2nd grade level Japanese at the time and was able to hang out and/or hook up with several Japanese girls. I did not meet anyone who was transferred there for work. Most had a moderate level of proficiency and learned quickly. However, the teachers with a Japanese wife or girlfriend spoke very little Japanese. They had their female companion do all the translating, etc. for them. As a result, they also had about one semester's worth of Japanese language skills after living there for years. My, "purpose," is to suggest you stop helping him so much with Japanese so he can learn faster.😆
