I think we'll see a clear vision of how the all blacks want to play, and players will be in their specialist positions. If razor can pick a starting 23 by the end of the year and play that team consistently in big games until 2027, the win rate will go up

It's such a shame he wasn't in charge of the current cycle. With Smith, Retallick, Whitelock, Mounga etc I am pretty sure we would have won the RWC under him. We only just failed with Foster, Razor would have dramatically improved the results over the last 4 years and would have brought home the prized trophy. Hopefully he can do it in this next cycle , but I am not as confident with this group of players and without the greats of our game in the team anymore.

As a Springbok lover & rugby pundit I was so phckn stoked when they appointed Foster in place of Robertson 4 years ago...I literally gestured "YES MAN" knowing the ABs would not have a great run and/or that they would not win the WC under Foster, turned out to be close though, and that they were postponing their domination by not appointing Razor. Well, could only postpone the inevitable for so long - watch out world rugby now - he's gonna be great. ABs just waisted 4 years, if you will, thank god, it gave us the first 4x WC wins and back2back to boot. Thank you NZR & ABs coaching selectors, committee, management, executive, and board. It was such an obvious blunder - I told everyone about it then, and it worked out to a T.😊

I’m glad you see this. So many Kiwis have some kind of love-in for Foster. The guy never achieved anything as a head coach. To me, the appointment of Foster smelled of an old boys cigar club kind of hire. We definitely missed the opportunity 4 years ago. Now Razor takes over a team that will be losing beauden, Mo’unga, Cane, Ardie, Whitelock, Retallick, Taylor, Frizzell, A.Smith etc that’s 100s of caps going. It is a new era and Razor is still the right guy to lead but wow, what a missed opportunity for him to achieve something great with that group of players

My problem is that Dmac has been in the AB's environment for a long time, and yet with all his potential, still makes huge mistakes with decision making and the mercurial nature of his play is less apparent at test level than it is at Super Rugby. When it comes off, it's spectacular, but most of the time, when he plays a test, I can usually remember the mistakes he made more, and we need a general at 10, not an occasional magic maker.

@@Slipperygecko390 That's mad. Kwagga looks like a much bigger 1.8m 97kg player, and Kirifi a much smaller 1.8m 101kg player. I would never have picked them to be so similar in heights, let alone Kwagga being lighter - though those measurements are always grain of salt ones. I suspect Kirifi's bigger problem is his tendency to give away penalties - he still hasn't quite managed to tidy that up out of his game yet. And if we're tipping a 3rd 7 behind Papali'i/Cane/Savea then i'd see Robertson going with Christie over Kirifi, and that's not even including Harmon who is probably better than both & the most versatile loose forward in NZ.

1. which lights your fire the most: "Foz", "Fozzie" or ****RAZOR****? That's a no-brainer. 2. the problem with exceptionally skilled attacking nines is that they are more exposed to injury like Dupont in the 2023 RWC. If Roigard is going to be the starting 9, it would be wise to have a superb distributer like A. Smith on the bench 3. ABs need to upgrade their quite good kicking. Two missed kicks (3, if you count the missed conversion) cost them the Cup. Kicking needs to be "Dan Carter-esque" again, or, well, as close as you can get to that level of skill and ice water in the veins. 4. Offense will get you into the knoc-out phase of the RWC, but having the best defense in the world is more likely to win you the cup. Your Planet Rugby version of this piece once again made into my Rugby feed again - you're gonna be famouser and famouser as a Rugby pundit!

@@joedennehy386 Grace can't get any bigger, he has already bulked up to his maximum. He was about 5kgs lighter a couple of years ago. If he bulks up even more he will compromise on his speed. Don't think we should compare anyone to Ardie, he is so much more explosive than most other players and has freakish strength, neither quality that Grace possesses. @@joedennehy386 I mean there are guys even in the current All Blacks squad that are bigger than Ardie. Dalton Papili and Shannon Frizell are both taller and bigger than Ardie but Ardie Savea punches well above his weight. He offers a team what others don't. His leg drive and sheer ferocity plus his work rate are unmatched. You'd have to go back to the great Richie McCaw to see someone with such a high work rate and McCaw was never a massive loose forward either. If size were the key then you'd see either Samoa, Fiji or Tonga dominate world rugby but clearly that ain't the case. Ardie is special and should've been the 1st choice for captain. It's going to be interesting to see who Razor selects--I think we will see him creating a team that works really well together and doing all the basic things with elite efficiency. Our front row is just starting to look formidable but we are losing two of the best locks in the history of the game at the same time. We will still have a great lock in Barrett, but who his partner will be is up for grabs. The loosies blooded this world cup (Frizell and Papalii) will be strong contenders to maintain their spot next to the legendary Savea. But who is keeping Savea's spot warm and coming off the bench when he gets back is up for grabs. I haven't seen much of Grace, but will be keeping an eye out for him now. Roigard: agree 100%. The kid is special. If not DMac at 10, who are the up and comers? I wonder if Ruben Love could be awesome at 10... Jordie and Ioane are building a nice combo in the centres and Telea and Narawa are awesome wingers. Hopefully we will finally see Will Jordan at fullback! Lock is area of concern. We need find two world class locks. Barrett and Lord are two best locks. Lord played really well against Argentina We need another two.The most important team for player development is the All Black XV. Mark Telea,Cam Riogard,Tamati Williams played in this team. If our players are not getting high level games at Super Pacific level. We need bring back the North Island vs South Island game. This should be three game series.

Grace has been injured more than once, and has spent a lot of time on the sidelines. If not for that, I believe he would have featured more heavily. My issue with Dalton is, where with Sam Cane you see him making a significant but less visible impact (dominant tackles, first to rucks, arrival time to rucks etc), Dalton I feel, rarely makes that same level of impact. He's never impressed me. I can't recall any time where he was the difference in a test match. Sam Cane has his detractors, but his stats speak for themselves, and there have been plenty of matches Sam Cane has been a major contributor to a win.

I hope we get 5 in form players instead of 5 experienced players that might step up every so often. We haven't had a number 8 since Keiran Reid, Ardie wasn't good enough to get into the team as anything but a blindside at the time and jumped out of position into 8 cock blocking the position ever since. Papalii has had plenty of oportunities(and failed miserably regularly unless it was a completely dominant AB game), he shouldn't get anything unless he actually puts on some super rugby form. I'm super hopeful but actual expectations aren't high. Cane, Savea, Frizel, had some great games but didnt have form before selection and played a bunch of poor games. If others got oportunities would they have stepped up when it mattered, will never know. Media loves Telea, but every game bar the final he's multiple turnovers, if not points for the opposition and terrible defense to go with it. Hopefully Narewa recovers from injury.

Great content, from an Argentinian!! Mark, can you PLEASE PLEASE explain to the rest of the world how the rules around the New Zealand team work? What does it mean and what are the eligibility implications for NZ players when: go on a "sabatical"? Go to Japan or Europe for short term? Go to Japan or Europe for long term? Does NZ have the eligibility rule that players MUST play in NZ to be selected for the NZ team? If so, for how long before a test match or a Rugby World Cup? Does NZ have a lot of great players they are missing out on or cannot use because of this rule?? Why Mo'Unga is going abroad and rejecting the All Blacks if he's still young for the next World Cup? Can you please do a REVIEW of what will happen with each player of the NZ team after the 2023 world cup? What are their plans and probable future replacements?? Thanks Mark!!
@lazer_kiw1
@lazer_kiw1 6 ай бұрын
I'm not 100% on this, Mark probably knows better but I think it goes something like this: - Players have to be contracted to one of the NPC sides in the preceding season - Uncapped players or players returning from sabbatical on a new contract must play for their NPC side before being selected - BUT some exceptions can be made for certain players considered valuable enough where they are given the option to play overseas short-term as part of their NZR contract. This is not the case for Whitelock, Smith, Mo'unga etc. but it is for Ardie, Sam Cane and potentially Beauden as well. - However it is likely that Mo'unga and maybe Fainga'anuku will return to NZ and play domestically before the next RWC
@jga9951
@jga9951 6 ай бұрын
@@lazer_kiw1 THANK YOU!!! I assume that by NPC you actually mean a Super Rugby Team? And also assume they need / want to go overaseas just because they earn much more.. what a shame! If a player goes "long term" and doesnt come back to NZ a year prior to the RWC, they arent eligible? Thats what happened with Laumapi, right?
@lazer_kiw1
@lazer_kiw1 6 ай бұрын
@jga9951 No I'm pretty sure eligibility depends on the NPC (the provincial competition that takes place during the international season) as it is a strictly domestic comp while players from outside NZ can play in super rugby. And yes, players go overseas because that's where the $$$ is. Also true with Laumape.
@swivel6497
@swivel6497 6 ай бұрын
yeah, you have to be signed by NZR, so Ardie and Cane are signed up by NZR for next year, but have also been given leave of a sabbatical (where players often chose to skip Super Rugby, either rest or overseas contract). Razor wants to talk to NZR about expanding this, opening it up even more and allowing multi year sabbaticals in say Japan. Think immediately Frizell, Barrett, Mounga especially is who he's interested in for this. Typically, if you haven't earned the required status yet, leaving with the idea of returning is frowned upon and you had to earn your right to selection by playing either SR or the next level down NPC (eg Taranaki). Even Sonny Bill-Williams had to do this once or twice. Mounga has gone for three years, BBBR went for 2 years last time, NZR won't accept anything less than a full year (even incl previous years NPC, which ends same time as Nov tours). There have only been a few successful single year returnees though. Mounga is backing himself to be one of those successful few. It's a big ask/risk. Yes, NZ has a lot of players that just can't fit into one team, and Super Rugby money alone is not enough to equal the northern leagues. These are the same fundamental rules that every nation applys. even arengtina. Aus and SA are not as strong so cant use this to get the best at home. NZ largely manages to keep the best, there will also be those like Bundee Aki, and those like Mounga who are at the end of the career but still no1. It's so competitive no one really signs on for a full 4 years. Most of the team will be 2 or 3 years, but are all likely to continue to 2027 if they are still getting selected. Only Dane Coles from the ABs has retired, otherise like Rettalick Whitelock Aaron Smith Nepo big Lester might retire overseas. That's all from the RWC squad, a pretty good cycle for retention into next year. Other prospects have been lost Brad Weber, Jack Goodhue, PGS. Congratulations on another run to the Semi finals/playoff game

@@swivel6497 thanks good summary. Although I think Beauden is set to renew his NZR contract which will allow him to return next year, and Dane Coles isn't done yet: He's doing a stint in Japan before retiring.
