It's sad that crested geckos are threatened in the wild, but at least they're thriving quite well in the pet trade. They're extremely easy to breed and make amazing pets.

Fun fact. The red-tailed black shark is actually extinct in the wild. The specimens we commonly see in pet stores are all collected from farms. This is the same case with many rare livebearer(fish that make babies, not eggs) species.
@Annie_Annie__3 жыл бұрын
It was thought to be extinct but some *very* localized populations have been found in Thailand in the past few years. It’s amazing because aquarium trade redtails are too far removed from their wild ancestors to be released in to the wild to increase their numbers. So it’s possible these tiny wild populations could be used in breeding programs and reintroduced to rivers where they are now extinct.
@avidhossanmansur98303 жыл бұрын

@kasperkjrsgaard14473 жыл бұрын
The fish you mentions are very easy to breed and it’s highly doubtful that they’re catched in the wild for the fish trade. 99% of the species disappearing are due to loss of habitats and pollution.

I agree I recently bought 12 white cloud mountain minnows and they were incredibly cheap like £1 each so doubt there that rare
@daltonparker77922 жыл бұрын
The easy answer to that is that they would be caught in the wild on the other side of the planet… and just because you can buy them for cheap, doesn’t mean they aren’t endangered. And thirdly, don’t try to justify human destruction by saying that it isn’t the pet trade that is responsible.

I hate it when KZbin recommends videos of owls that are obviously being kept as pets. It breaks my heart. Owls make horrible pets and shouldn’t be kept in houses or apartments. Especially not because it makes “cute” KZbin videos. I try to avoid those as much as possible but the algorithm doesn’t seem to get the message.

I can talk about crested with details, knowing one of the first guys to have bred them from the original stock. When rediscovered they became interesting for some labs in germany. Over, time 2 bunch of 200 were collected. From that group, 80 ended up being sold to 4 persons, included my dear diceased frend Hervé Saint-dizier. They never imagine, except from Repashy at that time, they would be so successful in breeding them, and that they would have ended up being many nowadays. Unfortunately, they have lost a lot of their wild behavior, they are way more defensive usually. Being eaten by larger species of rachodactylus. Some babies of the original group are sometimes sold, at high price, they have become rare and very few people have them and kept them not inbred. With time the species shows more health issues, coming from a small group of more or less related individual. This made the illegally collected ones (since no official collecting is authorized), very pricy. To the point japanese and chinese people have being caught poaching them. With a japanese man starting a fire by accident, burning a portion of their habitat in 2017 if I remember well.
@marcelloplessi92993 жыл бұрын
True, if we still have them around nowadays as one of the most popular pet lizards is thanks to the all the breeding efforts that have been made. Breeding basically avoided their extinction. I think the same goes for axolotls.

Fun fact. I knew an old couple before they died from age. They were friends with my grandma and my deceased grandpa. This old couple had this parrot for over 60 years old. It knew how to speak Portuguese fluently and even could have full on complex conversation in Portuguese. If a toddler Can speak to you So can an African grey. It also loved watching soccer especially when Barcelona or Portugal was playing. It would start cursing the other team when they won or scored against Portugal and would even do more so when Portugal scored after this. It was hilarious. The parrot died five years ago and the couple 3 years ago.

There is also a positive side on the pet trade, like the fact that captive breed crested geckos and axolotls outnumber the wild ones in nature Wich helps keep the species alive, the problem is when people don't get captive bred pets, but wild ones Wich harms the species and animal, as they may be incredibly stressed and may have parasites

Wildlife Pet trade is bad and dark no doubt but for many animals being a pet means survival of the species as deforestation and other factors are are depleting their natural ranges.And many scientists, animal experts including the great David Attenborough believe that it could save many species from extinction of done legally with certain rules and regulation.

Why not introduce these critically endangered animals in areas where they could thrive but still be controlled by other native animals? The grey macaw could easily get an established population in the South American rain forest, the axolotl could have a recovering population in the clear rivers of Greece, the cherry barb could easily be repopulate in Cambodia or Laos, the crested geckos could literally be moved to any pacific island with trees, and the cloud minnow can be established in many freshwaters in the United States

When it comes to exotic pets the only people that should get them from the wild are people trying to breed them and regular costumers should only be able to purchase captive bred animals. To qualify as a breeder the person should show success with similar species first.
