If you can’t print every few days, Install “Inkjet Plumber”. You can set it to run a test pattern every X number of hours (for Canon, keep it under 60 hours to keep the printer from running a cleaning cycle). Don’t ever shut the printer off. It only uses a few watts of power when idle. Doing this will extend the life of your print head, save you a ton of ink, and keep your heads un-clogged.

@@CraigBergonzoni Sure thing. I should mention that Inkjet Plumber is a Mac application, but there are other programs, like Qimage that has this function. Actually, Qimage is a complete printing application that does much, much more.

Very good info. I just opened my Pro 100 TODAY after I bought it in June 2016 (health and several surguries) My initial print pattern looks flawless without doing anything?? Do I need to print every 60 hours, as in 2.5 days, or can I leave the printer on and test print every Sunday nite? Will it still do a cleaning cycle if I only print every Sunday night? Thanks.

@@evadadogzein if you had to install that app and do all that to stop the printhead from clogging and being destroyed the printer would have tons of bad reviews.

Another very well made video my friend. I really do need to get more serious about using the test pattern feature. I've only done the small size test pattern prints, but seeing your large ones convinces me there's real benefit to using them and getting fine tuned output. Putting all these into binders is great idea too, which I need to do. I think basically I'm still in exploration mode with printing, but need to start focusing a bit more on consistency. Looking forward to your next videos. Great work, stay safe, be well, and keep shooting :)

Hello Craig, I just came across your channel and as a Canon PIXMA PRO owner for some years now ( I bought it when I retired and decided to return to my hobby as an amateur photographer, capturing images of the landscape of Ireland. In the 70's I used my old Darkroom in dedicated bedroom with a Durst enlarger but now use Lightroom, clever marketing by Adobe eh ! ) I am impressed with, and fully agree with your observations and recommendations. One game changer for me with this printer was the Canon Print Studio Pro -Plug In. It's test sheet allows me to select the settings that best suits my preferred image and as a bonus permits me to copywriter my printed photographs. Congratulations upon your no jargon, honest straight forward presentations, delivered with assured proven confidence. Wishing you continued success. Sincerely. Seamus Cody

Awesome video very informative and def looking forward to checking out more of your videos. I just set up my new Canon Pixma Pro-100 printer in my home office last night. I am production artist and print labels using a HP Indigo Digital Press so I very critical when it comes to printing. But I really wanted an affordable professional printer I wanted premium quality printing so that I could start selling prints of my photography but I wouldn't sell a print that I would not buy myself. Took me a couple hours to unbox and read the steps and then set it all up which was very painless installing the printhead and inks was not a problem at all. Now the software was a little pain I have 3 Macs which I know sometimes is a little more difficult but my Mac mini runs Catalina which gave me problems wouldn't install said Catalina was to new so I tried my MacBook Pro which I run High Sierra vs 10.13.6 I was able to get the driver and all software installed everything went smoothly I also have it hardwired to the printer everything installed smoothly using the Mac OS high Sierra I could also print wirelessly from my other computers iPad I think haven't tried and don't want to waste ink but the option is there ... so I wanted to see what this printer can do so I chose to use the canon paper LU-101 Photo Paper Pro Luster out of a sample pack I also ordered. I chose this stock because it was int between a glossy and a matte stock had a nice luster to it .. lol .. I just grabbed a high res photo off google of a colorful tree frog. Dragged the image right into My Image Garden which is a program it comes with and then it printed full bleed and it came out incredible amazing over satisfied first print on this printer. No alterations or anything. Its just the colors very nice saturation I excellent and the gradients so smooth I am def critical but this really got me excited and I am looking forward to see what this printer is capable of. Off to great start. thanx

@CraigBergonzoni
@CraigBergonzoni 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Bianca, so I mentioned a few types of test sheets. In the Printer Utility software you can print Nozzle Checks (which is the paper of color bars I show). This will show you if you have a clog or if you need to run a clean cycle. You can also run a Print Head Alignment which will also print a test pattern to verify the alignment is working or if you need to run it again. The other types of test prints are labeled as "Pattern Prints" inside the Canon Print Studio Pro Software - under "Color Settings" tab. You can print Pattern Prints for both black and white and color. For B&W you print one for Tone and one for Brightness/Contrast. And for color you print one for Color and one for Brightness/Contrast. Printing these will help you calibrate your settings so you know exactly what to expect when printing. Since your computer monitor and desk lighting can skew what you see on screen this helps you get the print you want. So to summarize Printer Utility for Nozzle Check & Print Alignment. Canon Print Studio Pro for "Pattern Prints" for B&W and Color. For older printers like mine you need to run Canon Print Studio Pro as a plugin to Photoshop, Lightroom or Canon Photo Professional (software). The newer Canon printers can run the latest version of the software without the need for Photoshop, etc. I hope this helps! Feel free to email or comment with more questions if you have them. I'll try to make a newer video about this stuff soon. Thank you for watching and commenting! Much appreciated!

yeah, i concur. i used to be an Epson user for years but couldn't handle all the clogs finally just gave it away I was so pissed. got a pro 10 and never had a clog. I've used Hahnemuhle, Ilford, Canson, Epson, and find that that canon pro luster is the best as far as wider latitude, smoother gradations, neutral greys. just wish it were a thicker museum paper. for clients, I have to use the Hahnemuhle for the thickness. For my personal stuff, I use the canon pro luster.

Also with mastering one paper having that printer paper driver set on either the photo editor of choice or as a preset on the print driver helps. When discussing the sample/test images is there a recommended paper size? And is it an option on photoshop or Canon's software?

Craig, thanks for an excellent video - full of good ideas. I have a question: Since printing a test sheet uses all of the ink colors, why wouldn't that be adequate to keep the ink flowing to prevent drying, instead of printing actual images on photo paper. Also, it is so easy to simply hold down a button and print on standard paper already in the printer.

There's really no consensus on this. I'm just as guilty as the next guy in terms of letting mine sit for weeks and months sometimes. What is the longevity/fade resistance of Canon Pro Premium Matte paper, printed on the Canon Pixma Pro-200? (Print displayed under glass, away from direct sunlight.) Canon's literature on Wilhelm tests only refers to Glossy Plus and Pro Platinum papers, nothing about Pro Premium Matte, which does not have a microporous coating as glossy paper does.

Hello again! For black and white, is there any matte paper you can recommend? I'm thinking of getting the pro 200. My first option gas a pixma G550 because cheap cost of printing and easy maintenance, but I've read that there are no icc profiles for that printer, so that's why I'm considering the Pro-200. Thanks for all the videos, they're so useful always!
@CraigBergonzoni
@CraigBergonzoni 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Martino, for the Pro-200 I would consider sticking with the Canon brand of Matte papers like the "Photo Paper Pro Premium Matte". The Pro-200 is a dye based printer similar to the Pro-100 which I owned for a long time. I didn't have much luck with 3rd party matte papers on it. So I generally avoided printing too much on them. I now own the EPSON P700 but I was considering the Canon Pro-300 as well. Both are pigment based printers with dedicated matte black ink channels and do much better with B&Ws on both glossy and matter papers. You can definitely get good B&Ws with the Pro-200 though if thats the direction you choose to go and of course it's great with color. Let me know what you decide to do!

thanks for the tips! when you say print "often" though what does that mean? once a week? every day?
@CraigBergonzoni
@CraigBergonzoni 3 жыл бұрын
Honestly there is no specific frequency for printing “often” that’s part of the reason I was a little vague on this. It depends on who you ask. Some people say a few times a week, others say once a week. I honestly think it partially depends on the environment your printer is in. My personal goal is a few times a month, so sometimes that works out to once a week (sometimes a little less or a little more).

Start by printing a nozzle check. If it looks good then you should be good to start printing. You might need to run a cleaning cycle or two. If by some chance you do have a clog that can't be cleared by a standard printer controlled cleaning than you can remove the print head and try to clear it out. There are a few videos with good tricks on how to do that online. But hopefully you won't have to do that. If you your nozzle check comes out looking good maybe print a small photo 4x6 or something just to run a bit more ink through to check. Let me know how it goes!

What is the best way to print from macOS Monterey on an M1 Mac to the Pro-100? The only option for Canon software is the older plug in. But for that, you need an Adobe product that works on Monterey. The CPPL stand alone, which would be the absolute best way, does not work on the Pro-100 (thanks Canon). Right now, it seems like being sure you are using the Canon IJ network driver, and not the Bonjour driver, is the only option. Which, can print from COP, Nikon NX Studio, and other programs. But I do not know how it compares with the old Canon plug in or if the CPPL worked on the Pro-100.
@CraigBergonzoni
@CraigBergonzoni 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, unfortunately the printer driver is the best option when the software can't be used. The software was nice for helping with layout of the image and such but as long as you have the appropriate ICC profile loaded for your paper (unless it's canon paper then the profiles should be installed by default) you should be good. It's unfortunate that Canon doesn't give the new software tools to owners of the Pro-100.

Hi, any idea why single or multiple sheets of 4x6 photo paper will not feed through completely. It starts but stops and a jam error code pops up. When this happens, If I shut down and start up again, jammed paper will roll out fine. Any other larger size paper works with no issue. This is happening on my Pro 9000 MKII printer.

Hey Mollie, for paper brands I've had good luck with Canon paper and Ilford. I used a sample pack from Red River and loved that too. I want to buy more of Red River paper soon. In terms of the type of paper, this is a personal choice. I really like luster or pearl finishes to my B&W photo paper. I've used Canon Pro Luster a ton and love it. I get some great results from it. Ilford's Pearl finish has been great too. I want to try larger sizes of this paper. A lot of people like matte paper for black and white. Sometimes I like a matte print but overall I just like the way luster/pearl finishes look with B&W. The Pro-200 seems like an awesome printer! And you'll definitely be able to print 4x6 prints on it. Thank you for watching and commenting! Best of luck with your printing. Let me know how it works out for you.

It might be possible to get it going again. If there is a clog or two you'll probably go through a decent amount of ink to get it cleared. Run a nozzle check and print test page to see if you can identify specific clogs. And consider doing one of these cleanings on your print head (assuming you have a clog that doesn't clear with a cleaning cycle from the Print Utility - printerfaq.com/clean-printhead-canon-pixma-printer/ Let me know how it goes. I hope it all works out.

@@ryanlynch347 Hey Ryan, there are methods to clean the print head and if that doesn't work then you can purchase a new print head online or buy one from someone on eBay. I've owned mine for almost 6 years now and I've only had one problematic clog which I was able to clear. One thing I haven't mentioned in the video is to stay with Canon brand inks. Third party inks are cheap but can cause issues. Best of luck with your printer!

Thanks for the tip video however I have a question pertaining to the Pixma pro printer. I just recently purchased it and my first prints are all blue. ?? My ink test page that was printed only shows the blues and a light gray the rest are all blank. I haven’t even been able to print an actual photo yet because all my test pictures are blue. I have tried all tips I can find and nothing works. Is there something I am missing? Specific software that is needed? I am running an iMac and downloaded the driver. Is there anything else I should have or can do? Is this a printer head issue? Like I said I have only printed 3 or 4 images on plain paper as a test and all are blue. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you again.

Craig Bergonzoni yes I bought the printer brand new. It came with a set of ink cartridges and all are completely full. I was super careful installing the printer head and followed the instructions. It took me over and hr just to get it out of the box. Also I don’t know if I mentioned it but it doesn’t seem to want to feed paper from the rear paper slot. I’m starting to think I need a special program on my computer to tell it what to do? So lost!

Yup, Pro100 user about 3 -4 years now. I am guilty. guilty, guilty. I figured if something happens I'll just get another one for the price with the rebate figured in. No rebates anymore. I have gone up to3-4 months without printing with no problems. Don't do test sheets either. Soon or later it will catch up. Lately , I have been printing a lot. Purchased 2 packs of the CansonInffinity sample packs &, 3 packs each of the Red River Photography &, Photography Expansion sample packs. I figure, Pick 3-4 different type of photos (eg. south west landscape Porrtrait, & something that would look good printed on metal) & print one of each on every type of paper in the sample packs. Then pick the 1,2, or 3 papers you might stick with. Got a question. Do you know what picking the actual paper types gloss, luster, other fine art does in the pro 100? Not talking icc profiles. Other fine art makes me use a 1-1/8" border. I chose another paper type so I could print with a smaller border & it came out just as good. Tried calling Canon but was on hold to long & hung up.

The media type lets the printer know how much ink is needed for the paper type. I think it also adjusts how fast it actually lays the ink down onto the paper. I have also noticed some flexibility with this setting, especially with glossy or semi-gloss paper. I have to image matte paper would not be so forgiving and would need the appropriate media type chosen. Have you seen the new printers Canon released this year? Pretty cool. I might have to save up for an upgrade soon. Thank you for watching and commenting!

@@petrbures9719 turned off. A You Tuber, Jose Rodrigues says Canon uses heaters in the heads & that is why they don’t clog.
