My apartment-resident girlfriend loves these things, but I put my foot down and said they were a bridge too far. A cat is enough. But your lovely accent and the way you talk, though very different to her, makes me think you may be similar kinds of people, so I fear I may be on a slippery slope.

Good advice. I give a peanut or a raison as a treat. If your chin gets the runs give it an inch square piece of really burnt toast to help settle the problem.

Thank you for these helpful videos. I am from South Africa. I got my little chinchilla a few months ago and food is not very easily sourced for him. I mean the plain pellet variety. I have only been able to buy the Tiny Friends one that you said is not good. I do try to leave the pellets in and make him aware that he needs to eat those as well. It's been working well thus far. Is that okay? This is my first chinchilla and I don't want to do anything that would harm him. Thanks.
@AllysAnimalAntics4 жыл бұрын
Hi if it's the only food you can get is better than nothing 🙂 I don't know if you have Beaphar care + for chinchillas out there, but thats a really good chinchilla food . But I wouldn't worry too much, he will be fine with what you are giving him as long as you give him high quality hay as well.
@KovaniaChetty4 жыл бұрын
@@AllysAnimalAntics thank you so much for the assurance. I will try to see where I can get this food. I've been giving him good hay but now with Lockdown things are getting harder to source.

Your advise is so helpful, I am currently setting up to adopt a female in January. How long should I let her settle before trying to bond her to another female and is it easier to bond her (3years old) to a younger female?
@AllysAnimalAntics Жыл бұрын
A couple of weeks normally, it's sometimes easier with a younger chinchilla but it's honestly more to do with what their personalities are like . I successfully bond older chinchillas all the time 🙂

Im thinking about getting a chinchilla, I actually have an apple tree in my backyard, could I cut off branches and cut off the bark for it to chew? Also, does the fabric at the bottom (thats what I plan on using) have to be fleece? I've been binge-watching your videos, they are very helpful and your chinchillas are so cute!
@AllysAnimalAntics4 жыл бұрын
Hi yes apple wood is fine you just have to make sure you wash it and prepare it first. I usually wash the branches and then bake them in the oven for an hour or so to dry them out, it also kills anything nasty that could be on the wood 🙂 Non pill fleece is the safest option to use, other materials are not really safe . You just have to make sure the fleece is non/anti pill.

I was gifted these Timothy hay sticks; made in China (which I try to avoid-especially since I own a dog and you can’t give dogs china made treats) the ingredients listed for these sticks are 99% hay and 1% oats, I feel like this is a lie because I read before some of these are made with honey but that is not listed. The sticks are green and bright. Again, these were a gift so she didn’t know if these are OK or not. What do you recommend?
@AllysAnimalAntics2 жыл бұрын
I would avoid them to be on the safe side. I know that molasses is sometimes used as a binding ingredient (it's even used in chinchilla pellets) it's okay in very small amounts, like in pellets. But with chinchilla pellets they tend to give you the full list of ingredients and the quantities of each so you can make an informed decision. I would be skeptical of any product that doesn't disclose what is in them as there is no way it's just hay and oats something would be needed to bind the hay and oats together.
@amarie90922 жыл бұрын
@@AllysAnimalAntics thank you so much ally! That’s what I figured because these sticks are waaaay to bright to just be hay and oats.

Hi Ally!! I love your videos ❤️ I wish I owned a chinchilla but I live in a very small studio apartment and there is no way I can fit a proper cage 😭 still, I wonder.. I saw someone giving their chinchillas chew sticks, is that safe??
@AllysAnimalAntics4 жыл бұрын
Hi thanks for your comment 🙂 It depends, if it's natural made from wood such as willow, apple or hazel etc then that's fine but most commercial pet shop chew sticks designed for rodents normally aren't safe. But really it depends on what it's made of from if that makes sense.

Hi Ally... Great video and very informative. We have 2 rescue Chinchillas and my question is about raisins. Are they good as treats? I give mine 2 in the morning and 2 at night. How often do you give them a dust bath? I give mine a supervised dust bath every other day for 15 minutes at a time.
@AllysAnimalAntics4 жыл бұрын
Hi, thank you 🙂 Dried fruit like raisins are not really safe for chinchillas, unfortunately they contain way too much sugar. I would avoid giving your chinchillas dried or fresh fruit, vegetables, also no nuts and seeds as they have too much fat in them. There are some healthier alternatives you can give to your chinchillas such as plain rolled oats (a small pinch is fine), plain shredded wheat, rosehips, bee pollen, chinchilla safe dried flowers such as dandelions. The only dried fruit that is potentially okay is dried goji berries as these contain less sugar but even these you have to give very sparingly only one or two at a time. Treats shouldn't really be given every day, I give my chinchillas treats twice a week . There are some things you can give your chinchillas everyday though that they will absolutely love and that's things like willow sticks, hazel sticks or apple wood. They love to strip the bark off of them. Every other day for dust baths is absolutely fine. I actually give my chinchillas dust baths every other day and for around 15 mins, some of my angoras have slightly longer in the dust 30 mins. Hope this helps 😀
@mbschan4 жыл бұрын
@@AllysAnimalAntics Thank you for your reply. I do give them rolled oats and apple wood sticks...their favorite treat are raisins, but they'll only get them twice a week from now on.

Dust baths should never be given inside the cage. Only during playtime with constant monitoring. It made me angry to hear that girl left her chin alone in it's bath unmonitored. My husband and I monitor our little guy constantly during playtime.
