5 Questions After Solo: A Star Wars Story

‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ opened this weekend. It’s directed by Ron Howard and stars Alden Ehrenreich, Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover, Woody Harrelson, Paul Bettany, Thandie Newton, and the voices of Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Jon Favreau. It is the second A Star Wars Story film and the first to specifically focus on an Original Trilogy character in the title. The film is an adventure into a dark criminal underworld, where Han Solo meets his future copilot Chewbacca and encounters Lando Calrissian years before joining the Rebellion. The Collider crew got to see the movie before it was released in theaters and the film left them with some questions about what we saw in the film and where the film ended.
Perri Nemiroff and John Rocha are here to answer these questions. They offer some possible theories for some of these characters’ motivations or ultimate landing place. They also explore some of the future storylines that we might see pop up in future Star Wars movies and where it might take the franchise as it goes forward. *Timeline* (BBY - Before the Battle of Yavin, which is A New Hope, the Death Star battle): 20 BBY - Clone Wars (Maul gets pwnt by Palpi) 19 BBY - Revenge of the Sith 13 BBY - Solo (opening sequence) 10 BBY - Solo 2 BBY - Rebels (Maul episodes) 0 BBY - A New Hope So he's had 10 years to build his rep again. 10 years in between RotS and Solo, and another 8 between Solo and his episodes on Rebels.

Seriously, you guys do all these Star Wars related shows and you still can't figure out timeline of the movie? Del Rey Timeline (which has Lucasfilm and Disney oversight) puts Solo after Tarkin (set in 14 BBY) and before A New Dawn (set in 11 BBY). There's your timeline. It's somewhere between 14 to 11 years prior to ANH.

Q'ira: I think she is the character who's role is to show us how plush and comfortable Han's life could have been had his morals not interfered with his "scoundreling". He and she have the same background, similar skillsets etc.... but differ on what is acceptable. Shot First: More than settling the Greedo debate (which it did), I feel that this scene showed us the moment Han realized that sometimes he had to let his cynicism override his morality. This is where the young hot shot boosting speeders became the Han Solo we know. Great video, love your questions.

I’d like to see Boba working for Maul and Han working for Jabba trying to get the same shipment of Spice. Han swipes his shipment from under Boba’s nose, Boba double crosses him by alerting the Imperials, Han drops the shipment as referenced in ANH and Boba steals it back. It could set up their fractious relationship nicely.

The lightsaber ignited is a tradition the franchise wants to go with. Just as with the "I got a bad/good feeling about this"; the lightsaber needs to appear somewhere somehow in each movie.

Solo takes place 10 years prior to new hope. Meaning Maul has awhile to get that old man status he has in Rebels. Which makes sense because he seemed like he was still pretty fit in solo compared to his Rebels showing.

In regards to the first question: Han winning the Falcon is not what Lando says he "pulled". Revisiting ESB it is clear that their relationship kept developing for years, and that they became friends even though Han always knew he wasn't to be trusted completely. And then at some point before ANH, Han did something that really rubbed Lando the wrong way. That back and forth they always had about who owned the Falcon is played more like those kind of arguments friends tend to have for years and never settle, and in ESB when Lando first mentions that it is his ship and Han says he won it fair and square it really sounds like an earlier and different event from what happened the last time they met.

I'm pretty sure that "what you pulled" line from Empire was just Lando pulling a fast joke on Han. Han thinks he's just casually coming to visit a friend, Lando comes in acting super serious with that line, Han then gives him a questionable look like "wait... you mean me??" and then Lando pretends he's coming in for a hit and then gives him a hug, implying he was just joking. But maybe thats just me and how I've interpreted that line since I first heard saw the film.

I was so pleasantly surprised by this movie, mostly because my expectations for Solo were so low. Pardon that pun, but I think I actually enjoyed it more than Rogue one, but not quite as much as TFA or TLJ. I'm actually really glad to have this in the Star Wars universe, and for me, Disney has hit base on all 4 of its releases. So keep them coming Mickey.

Like others have said, this movie takes place 10 years before A New Hope. Chewy is 200 in that movie, and he tells Han he is 190 in this movie. Plus they said where this movie takes place in canon already and it was between 10 and 14 years before ANH. I don’t know where you’re getting 5 years from.

I am a huge Star Wars fan. but this movie felt like a product to me. I thought the actors did a fantastic job portraying their characters, but in the end the story was very lacking to me. It also felt very "safe", which is the opposite of what I want in a Star Wars movie.

He only ignites his lightsaber so that there is one in a "Star Wars" movie. There was already no R2 nor 3PO. They just could not help themselves and let a "Star Wars" movie not having a lightsaber on top of that.

I honestly feel like the lightsaber ignition was more of a "yes, this IS darth maul" confirmation to movie goers that don't follow canon outside of the movies. To fans like us, it may seem like a shoe horned in flare, but without it the moment may not carry the weight it should have to the casual viewer.

But still unnecessary, as he has a very distinctive, unique and memorable look, being the one thing people remember from "The Phantom Menace", and they even added the "Duel Of The Fates" tune to underline that it's him. That's exactly why it's wrong. It's not "Deadpool". Maul is not supposed to acknowledge there is an audience. The scene is between him and Qi'ra over the "phone". In their reality, there is no fans, there is no audience, there is no danger for Maul at the moment, so no necessity to ignite his saber.

The way this movie ended, I could see a tv series called Tatooine. Han’s going there, Jabba’s probably there. I could see Darth Maul, Ben Kenobi and Qi’ra all there at some point. As well as a young Luke Skywalker appearance...eventually.

Maul is my favorite Star Wars character I seen all Clone wars, rebels and read all his none canon and canon comics, so I had a smile on my face of course but that's what Lucasfilm wanted, put a fan favorite character at the end of the film so fans walk out pump, just like in R1 with Vader but at least Vader had more screen time and made sense, it was setup.

regarding Qui-Ra's departure at the end, I really don't think that she is as much choosing a life with the Crimson Dawn over one with Han, as she is feeling trapped and owned by them. That tattoo isn't a symbol of her undying loyalty, it's a brand. She likely doesn't see a way out from under all that. She's not as naive as Han and doesn't see running away as a realistic option. Some have pointed out that she chose to take over Vos' position after killing him. I don't think she wants any part of that, but that she feels it's up to Maul, what lies ahead for her now. Such a shame those three years apart made in their lives. I'm sure it haunts Han from there on out.

Well the reveal of Ray Park reprising again was a nice surprise as he hasn't appeared since 1999. Of course in the Phantom Menace his voice was dubbed by Peter Serafinowcz. Now Sam Witwer taking over the voice is brilliant and seeing what he has been up to lately after the events of the Phantom Menace will be similar to Clone Wars. Maybe they could introduce Savage Opress in a future storyline.

My main question is the significance of Mandalorian culture at the end of the movie. I enjoyed the movie but I felt this story would have been better stretched out over a tv series on HBO and explored a bit more. I'm hoping that some of these characters stories aren't going away after the movie didn't do well at the box office. I think most people are interested in Qi'ra (possibly a dark side user?) and Maul, as well as the young rebel leader.

I was not really intersted in this movie and neither in a Boba Fett or Lando movie, but if they make those movie and use Jabba, Maul and have Han show up i think it could be interesting. Each movie will mainly focus on one character and how they work in the crime world, the other two can have smaller roles, but they will all be a part of the bigger story of how Maul will lose his position in Crimson Dawn and become the Maul we see in rebels.

If I was going to write a boba fett movie I would make the movie about boba fetts bounty was the very person han was snuggling..and han got away with his bounty..you can establish boba fetts relationship with vader..Hans past with the empire..vader meeting han or talking to him of him knowing of him..but also explore Jabba and han why he is his best smuggler even bring on earth maul..let it become almost like a space mob move as well as the other elements..star wars underworld movies would be sick..

I know the Crispen novels are legends and thus not canon, but I seriously doubt losing the Falcon was what Lando was referring to even though in the novel it hurts more. I think the betrayal or perceived betrayal at the end of Rebel Dawn is what Lando was referring to since everyone in Han's assault group but Han and Bria left with nothing. Both Qu'ira and Nest, in my opinion, are Bria just from their actions and characterizations.God no for a sequel.

Maul seemed pretty old and withered to me in Rebels, but in Solo he seemed pretty jacked... like more so than in Phantom Menace or Clone Wars. it was cool to get this deep-cut reference like that, but I thought Maul was misplaced in Solo. also, Qi’ra was fine in this movie, but I don’t want to see her in another film as some evil crime boss... she should’ve been the one that Han had to “shoot first.” that would’ve been a much bigger moment in defining Han’s character for the future.
