During COVID, I was able to start a small side hustle in video editing, and now it's my full-time job! You give great advice on how to draft emails to potential clients. Reediting someone's pre-existing content (twitch streams in my case) into a one-minute video is what landed me my first client. To everyone trying to get their first editing client, that is my number one piece of advice for beginners (other than just simply editing a lot).
@electricalbatross57977 ай бұрын
How does one even go about finding clients for video editing though? I edit video every week for work, so it'd be nice to do it a bit on the side for coffee money but I wouldn't even know where to start looking for people to email.
@AverySwanson7 ай бұрын
@@electricalbatross5797 I'm happy to answer this! In my case, I just reached out to creators that I was already a fan of and offered my services to them. Just look at the About panel on their channel to find their email. Most probably won't reply, but that's ok because you only need one to get started. As I mentioned, the one serious offer that I got resulted from the only email I had personally edited a video for rather than sending examples of my work, so I would HIGHLY recommend doing that, even if it might mean you're working 'for free'. I don't want to get pinged for spam, so I won't send the link, but there is a website that I haven't used but have heard is great for finding job listings. It's called Vouch, and it's easy to find with a quick Google search. As I understand it, there are many job listings for short-form content there. If you're actively editing for your day job, you're already in a great position to get started on KZbin. Pay close attention to the content you consume, and do your best to cultivate a deeper understanding of what in those KZbin videos creates high retention. There is no magic pill moment; the knowledge just comes with time. The way I developed my understanding was mostly while editing for clients. The bottom line is, just ask creators! Be on Twitter as well; there are often job postings there. Move from opportunity to opportunity and don't get too attached to one or the other; more will always be down the road. Personalize your offers with examples of their content edited by you (Twitch Vods are a great source of footage), and you will be well ahead of the competition. I wish you the best of luck!

1. "Edit some of my longer videos into short format" - so the very first advice in this video is "do spec work". Good sign. 2. Advice to basically pester online creators is repeated twice or three times even. Sure way to end up in the spam folder. 3. "You can learn social media management as you do it" - somewhat true, but also nobody who can afford to pay $1000 for SMM is going to hire an inexperienced newbie, and whoever will hire them most likely won't pay even $500. That's also applicable for pretty much any work, no matter side hustle or full time. 4. People share notes for free all the time. Shared Google docs, discord servers with rotating designated note-takers, etc. One will have higher chance of raining meatballs than finding a group of broke-ass college studend willing or even able to pay for it.

I was so happy when I was finally able to start hiring editors. I just had to teach them the type of storytelling I was looking for and they would do the work. I’d just check in every so often and give critique (I call this my “a$$hole edit”). It made my life so much easier.

I'm not even sure I'm going to be alive much longer. I've been dealing with cancer for two years now and unable to work a regular full-time job due to health that is like a daily roller coaster. I moved to Asia over 10 years ago and have been in Japan over 4 years now, currently studying Japanese in Hiroshima -- but my insurance support runs out soon and I don't have a good replacement yet. $1000 would get me by each month but it seems that, even with the big move to remote work, I can't even find a way to get a few hundred dollars, much less over a thousand. I've created several KZbin channels but only one brings me a few dollars per month from patrons while the rest have just wasted my time. All I really want to do is make films but time, money, and health interfere. I saw your pinned homepage video about not giving up and yes, my spirit feels the same, but my body is tired and really wants to give up, as a difficult life has left it devoid of motivation, which of course worsens my health and willpower. The continual drop in health makes me wonder if it's a waste of my time to try anything anymore.

@@ruriohama these are all service jobs which means that they are completely scalable. I just started dog walking a couple of months ago and with my first repeat client, walking 2 dogs for one hour twice a week, I was making 400 bucks a month(charging relatively on the low side of the market in my area. Got 2 more repeat clients for a 30 min walk for 1 dog and now I make near a grand. That is from three consistent clients, not even counting the one time clients. $1000+ working 30 min - 1.5 hrs a day is a good side gig which could later turn into a full job/business.

@@Ayeeejayyy9 I 100% agree, they can be scalable. But even if they weren't - they don't need to be. They're *side* hustles. Sometimes people are so stuck in the grindset that they seemingly forget the "side" part.

You are an impressive creator. I like your approach and communication style. In addition the concepts you are putting out there are right on the money. I wish I had had a fraction of your knowledge and drive 30 years ago 😂

Fantastic insights on accessible side hustles! 👍 Diving into video editing or social media management not only sharpens crucial digital skills but also builds valuable networks with creators, which can open doors to further opportunities.

Your advice is valuable. I'm actually doing some freelancing work almost full time, after being managing some business and educational work. Is not an easy path but worth it. Thanks🙂

Hi Ruri, Your content is great and well thought out. I have a question I an not sure if you have covered already, apologies if you have. Do you recommend shooting landscape view videos on YT for longer videos or is it perfectly fine to shoot portrait as well? Thanks :)
