I love how you say why your books might not be for everyone because if someone saw a book that looked interesting to them, they might pick it up and read it and then once they start reading it, they’re like “Oh, it has politics.” Or “Oh, it has inappropriate content.” and then they might lose interest. I also like how you said that Daindreth’s Assassin and the other books in your series had sexual things in it because one time I read a book and it had sexual things in it and I was like, “oh…I do not feel comfortable reading that out loud!” (I prefer reading out loud) and I just ignored and didn’t read it out loud. My mum bought me Daindreth’s Assassin. I’m only on Chapter 2 but now I know that it has heavy kissing in it so when I get to that part in the book I can just skip it. So this video was very helpful for me. Thank you (:

Thank you for being real about this. A lot of times when someone does a video about "why my book might not be you favorite" its sarcastic. like "you dont like powerful woman" or "you dont like good books". That is to say, whether i read the books or not, I feel more comfortable supporting you as a creator for your level of honesty.

The only reason I am not buying and reading this book is because the heating up makes me uncomfortable. It’s so tempting still but I don’t want to wander into something that churns my stomach. Maybe I will find out which parts have that prior and skip them. Not sure yet, but you are really selling this book. It sounds really good.

Maybe a stupid suggestion, but do you have a trusted friend who can put coloured paper over the text of those bits? Coloured so the text won't show through as easily.

To late, already ordered it, no take backs. =) I'm fine with everything you mentioned as long as there's character growth. Politics is fine as longs as there's some enjoyable twists and turns. Anyone can write hack and slash. Takes skill and forethought to pull off political intrigue. Looking forward to it.

Yeah im the same way. I like books that arent full-on romance, but have romance as a side plot. Like, the main characters have to go on a quest together and get to know each other along the way. I dont anything more than lissing and maybe an implied sex scene? Like when both characters are drunk and stumble into a bedroom and then it cuts to the morning after.

Faramir was a good guy and sometimes that what you need. If the main character dies questionable things (even with good intent), they need a moral compass. Although boromir was the more interesting character. 😉 It's totally ok if the villain isn't totally clear cut but to be fair, if all characters are just different shades of gray and the ambiguity is overdone, it's not interesting anymore. Having a good guy become the villian because of good elreasins or misplaced good intent is interesting if done well. Such characters can also have redemption at the end.

Ah, the reverse sell. Neat. Of course, it has been said that the purpose of advertising isn't just to se11 the book, but more importantly, to sell the book to the people who are going to enjoy it. Minor confession, I did wonder - not looking at the subtitles whether Book 4 was going to have a full on back-door sex scene . . . (I'll get me coat.)

I am writing a book in which my main lead is a Queen( like, an actual Queen) and she does some very questionable, borderline insane things to protect her kingdom. And oh, the male lead loves her. Like, it's almost reverence if I dare say. So uhh Pray for me cuz I am nursing this huge writers block

Hmm, I don’t know what the situation is with your publisher, but I can’t do open door spice. Would you ever consider publishing a version (same price or slightly more) with the spice redacted? I know there was a girl for a while who would purchase, white out, and resell this way but I seem to have lost track of her. I’d hate to miss out on the whole series for just a couple pages, but unfortunately I’d have to. It’s a religious thing.

I feel the same way. I could avoid those pages or white them out myself, but 1. avoiding temptation is sometimes necessary, and 2. I don't like to add to the demand for that type of content by buying it.

If you are really willing to read the book, couldn't you just skip those pages? Or glue them or leave a mark so you'd see it and not read that part? Or do you have specific customs to follow, like not owning books that have icky stuff in it?

I'd say it's not for me, except I'm writing this fanfic based on a canceled TV show (based on DC comics, sheesh), it's basically novel length now, and it kind of checks all the boxes you just mentioned, though probably not the same exact way. I mean, my heroine is The Joker's foster daughter, who was actually Two-Face's daughter, and she's got a really wicked sense of humor, but her squeeze is a real straight arrow type (adopted son of Bruce Wayne), though he did behead an immortal assassin this one time. She keeps calling him a doofus, and he is, and that's what she loves about him. He doesn't want to change her either. Thing is you need that contrast for an interesting romantic relationship. Maybe people who are very similar have good relationships, but they would have less to teach each other, and that makes for a much less interesting story. I got to the spice pretty early on (they'd already done it on the show), but I just don't feel the need to go full NC-17, to use fanfic parlance. I guess there are some fairly unambiguous bad people, but they tend not to take up much space, because again--not interesting. No layers. Anyone wants to read it, Google "Not Offended, Duela" And I think I will check out your first book. I'll buy that. You understand, I have to give my stuff away for free, because copyright. ;)

Finished! Loved it. Will read the Thadred/Sair spinoff when it gets to Kindle (I have no space left for physical books, apartment, partner who also reads but cant get into ebooks, fortunately I work for a library, that's worked out for her). Weirdly, Amira greatly resembles the morally grey redheaded heroine I borrowed from a shortlived TV series, who was in turn borrowed from the comics. Main difference is that my girl would probably look at Amira and say "Why so serious?" She's also into golden retriever guys, though. It's a nice contrast. Maybe hers is more of a German Shepherd. Or a really good-natured horse. I hope we haven't seen the last of Amira and Daindredth. But I can't say more than that without spoilers. So that's all I have to say. Except if anyone really loved the Daindredth books--Google "Not Offended, Duela." No charge. Because copyright is a thing.

@TheLastSane1
@TheLastSane1 2 ай бұрын
Archduke is Daindreth's version of Assassin up to Chapter 5ish (I would have to go back and see) basically just their first encounter and the fall out of it and how they end up continuing onto the story together. Bastard's Honor is a spin off about a secondary character who the fans love. Involving a character from Outlaw as well.

Its kind of spoilery, but only for like the first 2-3 chapters of book 1. Don't read past if you're not ok with that little spoiler. Amira was sent as an assassin to kill the cinnamon roll, things happened and she ends up working for the cinnamon roll, though mostly out of a sense of "Touch him and I will end you" he doesn't really employ her as an assassin so to speak.

I feel "100% evil/good" might be a bad way to put it. Especially since good/ evil could be seen as not the sum total of views. Take someone widly regarded as pure evil- like Stalin. He had tons of people murdered, set up his own dictatorship, and shipped Soviet soldiers who survived the Nazis off to siberia for being insufficiently loyal. Read piece of work. Thing is, he did oppose Hitler. Does that make him a good/morally grey person? I'd argue no, since, from what I've heard he did it out of power lust. Sure the Soviet peoples weren't slaughtered, but it wasn't out of concern for them, but the simple idea that Stalin could expand his power by being slightly less awful then the alternative. His actions were slightly less awful then Hitler, so he is not "100% evil" but so close it makes little difference.
