If you're new here - welcome! I am an artist and art teacher based in New Mexico. I have a BFA in animation and art education. I taught art in the K-12 setting for eight years. Now I create pottery and art in my cozy backyard studio.

Thank you for this. I actually started out to be an art teacher when I just came out of high school many moons ago. Back then, schools around my area didn’t have art teachers and I began to wonder where I’d have to go to get a job. I eventually got a really good job with insurance in the middle of college and quit like a dummy. I even quit drawing for a long time. But something happened to me around 40. I started drawing again, and actually found I could do things that I couldn’t do before. People started paying me to draw things. Then I felt the call to finish what I started. I’m a sophomore now and am looking forward to getting that degree. Better late than never I guess. And as far as art teachers in our area, seems they want them and can’t find them now. Go figure.

Teachers are always coming and going everywhere it seems. It's become a stressful job, so there are always openings. As long as you find a good fit, it should be something you enjoy, with a little touch of stress like any job out there.

So this is actually what I plan to do. I'll get my bachelor's in Art Education, and then I plan on getting my Master degree in either Science or English this way I can work as a science teacher or English teacher if an art teaching position isn't available.

If you get certified, art teachers make just as much as any other teachers. Depends on where you live, but it's definitely enough to live off of where I'm at.

I never thought about being an art teacher then my mom suggested it and I was iffy about it but seeing your video make me think that I should do it , everyone I know keep saying I would be a great elementary art teacher, so thank u , idk just yet cause it my career but maybe :3

You don’t have to have it all figured out in your 20s just learn to love yourself and soak up lessons. I think age is just a number for real go live your life. I’m approaching 30 and I feel like my life is just beginning. My 20s were a MESS 😅

I relate to you. I've always wanted to be a makeup artist and now I'm not doing anything with it. Now I'm thinking of becoming an art teacher for the same reasons you've listed.

You can still do makeup on the side if you get back into it. One of the other teachers I work with does makeup for movie sets in the area part time as well. But teaching definitely is a stable career.

I wanna be an artist because I want art mostly cartoon arts and my parents can't afford me to go to an art school so my aunt recommended me to pick an art teacher and.... I'm not really into teaching and I don't want to be an art teacher either so I hope I'm wrong in the future.

If you're hearts not with working around a lot of people or kids, don't be a teacher. It's much less about art and much more about managing a class full of kids. I'd suggest marketing or business classes/degree if you want to be an artist. You can learn art anywhere, but you might need help on how to make money from it if that's your goal.

Did you have any problems getting a job as an art teacher? Out of college, how long did it take for you to get a job? I’ve wanted to work as an animator since I was 10 years old, and it’s just recently hit me at 17 that I’d have to move to California and it’s a highly competitive field. I love art, but I also love Michigan and my art isn’t that great compared to others. I’m aiming for high-schoolers, but recently took up a summer job working with children and wouldn’t mind elementary age. Would you recommend getting a masters degree in another subject like english or history just in case? Thank you!

I got a job offer for teaching in April before I graduated, but I honestly took the first thing I was offered. It was 4 hours from where I lived so I moved and it was only .75 contract with hopes that it would go up to full-time and it did. I could have held out for a better school, pay, or location, but I was mobile and wanted experience right away. It all depends on where you are and where you're willing to move. From there I feel like it's pretty easy to find jobs if you're willing to move around. Getting a job as an animator is much harder, filled with contract work and a lot of hustling.

Also, the more certifications you get, the more possibility you'd get hired not to do art. I would either suggest a Bachelors in art and a master's in education if you're going that route, which I wish I did. I just got two bachelors instead, but now I'm stuck at a lower pay scale since I don't have a masters. It's cheaper to get a masters in ed than it is to do an MFA. Or just go for art education and take a variety of studio class and you can easily get a teaching job if you don't want to do a masters.
