I feel you 100%. I was born in 88, and growing up then without social media being what it is today, the "Starving Artist" comments were stronger than ever. Now that we have all of these platforms, it has really helped the creative community grow and share their creations for everyone to enjoy and see! My art teacher even pulled me to the side one day to tell me the only real money in art was teaching and I was like if that's the case, no thank you! But now I'm slowly working on an art business 😊! Unfortunately, many art teachers are notorious for saying things like that because they're jealous of others that "made it" while they simply became a teacher, though teaching is an admirable profession. My high school art teacher had the same attitude and said something similar to me. However, I'm essentially an artist. Though I'm not an artist in the traditional sense, I do get paid to illustrate every day, and I make a great living doing it, far more than my art teacher was making. If you make art in your free time, you're still an artist. Keep those skills up and sell your works online. It's incredibly rewarding!

Same. Alongside being told that I 'should not even pursue art as a hobby because it is an insult to the materials I would waste'. (The guy was an asshat who is currently in jail because of some of the stuff he had done with female students.) The irony is on the real money thing. It is usually from people who claim digital art isn't real art. It seems that they are their own worst enemies when it comes to success.

I understand you 100%, I am a mechanical engineer. I studied to make my parents happy, it has been a family career, my grandfather, my father, my cousins are mechanics. But I always wanted to be a filmmaker and write. Now I'm focused on what I want to do with my life, sometimes I'm frustrated because I don't work in what I like, but step by step I'm sure I'll find my way.

I'm the opposite - I started in art and now I'm transitioning to computer science. Lately, I feel that I see a lot of engineers switching to art, which is very nice. However for me, art is just not a livable income and I need to switch to a job that can help support my parents and myself. I thinks it's great that you're going back into the arts and pursuing something that makes you happy. Glad your boyfriend is also very supportive to your career switch as well! It's not easy to find others who can support you switching to a job in the arts. I've noticed that if you're not some top tier artist with a large amount of followings or a crazy job resume, a lot of people just view you in a negative light. Seeing you say that you're happy with your switch makes me happy. I'll be following your artistic journey! C:

Amazingly that's the same case for me. I have a background in Civil engineering and transitioned to art full time about 5 years ago. What I didn't realize is that the financial strain that would come from that switch would end up making me put so much pressure on myself to create and gain a living from art, which consequently led to me being less motivated to create and depressed. Disclaimer is that doesn't happen to everyone, but with the country that I'm from, art pays next to nothing, and I legitimately tried it all, from teaching to commissions to applying for jobs in game companies. I've recently transitioned to learning web dev and other programming languages just so that i can ease that burden, be able to support myself and my family. More and more i feel the urge to create just for fun and just for myself because that pressure is off. I do wish you the best in your art journey, and to everyone looking to go into it. For me, the best thing was to keep art as a therapy and creative outlet just for me.

Do you know who Karl Gnass is? He switched to an art career after being a script writer for 25 years. He took his 6month unemployment and used it to draw 8 hours a day. If you practice with purpose as he calls it, knowing what you are trying to improve on, you can improve very quickly

You say you've been lost and adrift for over a decade since leaving your profession. What is it you do now and is it still art that you want to get into? I spent years working as a musician/teacher but then started writing stories and songs for kids. I then illustrated them (had no background in art other than a little in school) but I practised over 6 months. I got into a top university to do an MA in animation but honestly didn't think I had much chance (applied regardless) given that others applying had a background in art. I stayed uo literally all night drawing and creating digital effects etc etc. When I was offered a place, I couldn't wait to tell my family but the reaction I got was totally unexpected..you're too old to go to uni, you're not good enough, you'll never get a job in the industry, you'll accrue debt..blah blah. Sadly I ended up with burnout from working full-time with no sleep due to my sheer determination to change paths and follow my dream. My point is..many people go through what you're going through and often feel it's too late to change direction or have too many other responsibilities etc. Even though I was unable to do the course due to exhaustion, I still don't regret it since it taught me an important lesson..there's no failure in trying and you may just surprise yourself. Maybe you're already doing the one thing you love now:)

Ah, relatable, my parents were supporting my art interests until it came to choosing a career and then suddenly it wasn't an option. It took me until my 30s to actually pursue art professionally through game development. And now almost 5 years later I'm also trying to move into self-employed space, even though working in an office is a much better fit for me (and pays better) but ultimately it's not really scalable or sustainable long term.

I feel this story. I spent years trying to make an art career work. Finally I gave up and transitioned into IT. But I still have a need for art. Even if it's for a side job, I'm still struggling to find out how to make it work. It's interesting that this popped up on my feed when it did. I'm blessed to have a loving mother, mom knew everything what was going on, been enrolled Civil engineering failed, enrolled to Computer engineering quit, mom knew everything what her little boy was going through, then she quietly, secretly been showing me art stuff to help me be inspired again, I quit art when I was 4th grade my teacher threw my notebook across the class room, my bad, but now I'm studying Perspective, Anatomy, and watercolor.

I studied art in university, but I needed to make money straight after graduation to pay off debt. I started working at a software company last year (lucky hire), and already feel burn out on the horizon. For last few weeks I've been searching for a workspace to finally give myself a shot at making art as a career. If all goes according to plan, I move in to my studio next week. I anticipate some long days of 9-5 work, and 5-12 artwork, but it feels like something I owe to myself to do. Like you, I just can't see myself working that job for the rest of my life! To me it's okay to try and fail, but not acceptable to fail to even try.

I worked as an engineer for 2.5 years and I also had the realization that I can't see my future working as an engineer. Its hard to start at 0 but the good thing is that people like my artstyle! And the universe help me work it out,. Clients are always there.. im amazed by how smooth everything is going now. Like you there is a lot of pressure from my family to have a 'stable job' that would provide constant support for my parents and my siblings but through the years I realized that I am doing things to make other people happy but totally disregarding my own feelings and aspirations. Making art is what makes me wake up excited everyday, not earning a bunch of money. I don't want to be crazy rich, I just want to make enough living and do the things that I love the most. I saved everything that I could and estimated I could live enough for a year or two without working then I quit, started a youtube channel and have never regretted every moment of it❤ It's a difficult and slow process but it's definitely worth it I know and feel it in my heart!🧡🧡🧡 You go girl!! This gives me courage that maybe one day I can follow my dreams too. I wanted to go to art school but my dad shot me down and said how I would amount to nothing if I pursued it. I got a random degree (in an area I do love) but am now working at a job I absolutely hate. I want out so bad but don't know what to do. This is the kind of video that hits me close to home. See, I'm a Gen Xer who actually majored from Arts school, but ended up doing IT jobs because I've always had a hand with computers, and jobs and money came in easier that way. The instilled fear of the "starving artist" has made deep cuts in many of us, forcing us to shelve our true passions for years to play it safe in the job market. Anyways after 20+ years of IT experience I was let go from my last office job mid-2022, and since then I've been living off my savings, taking in on lots of online courses and looking how to reinvent myself as a children's illustrator and comics / character designer. I know things are tough out there (the rampant assault of AI further complicating things on top) and I'm not writing off IT completely for financial reasons, but some times in life you need to look deep inside yourself, face the person in the mirror, and ask him or her what it is what really, absolutely wants. I know what mine does. And that it is also my full responsibility to make it happen for real. Thanks for sharing.

This video hits hard because of how relatable it is! I'm currently in architecture and growing up, being an architect has always been my goal because I thought I could put art in this career but it didn't fully turn out to be that way as I just end up using more of my logical brain and barely using my creative brain. I'm currently in that phase where I really want to pursue art as a career but I'm so anxious and scared on how it'll turn out as it will not financially support me as much as my career is now. I also don't want to disappoint my family and myself as I've spent so much time and money on my degree. Honestly, it's so sad to think that pursuing what I enjoy and love might disappoint them. I worked my last job to save up so that once I took the leap I could put my full focus into and not worry too much about the finances. I know the family support part is hard to deal with too. I hate that I have to prove myself to them but after a while they finally starting coming around because they see how much more happy I am in my life. Architecture and architectural design go hand in hand, I decided to not become a licensed architect because I realized what I really wanted to do was build megalithic castles lol. Not happening. After reflection I came to know I’m way more interested in the elements and design which go into a building, like the ones you see throughout Budapest. The art I do right now is both logical and creative; I want to learn how to weld and work wood so that I can make things which would be used as pieces of a home, whether they’re installed during construction, used as replacements for the stock parts in a building, or furniture. As an architect you can easily slip into the field of architectural design because each piece of a building needs to look good and actually hold up physically. There are many architectural design studios which cannot legally call themselves consultable “architects” because no members are fully licensed to actually create the blueprints for a structurally stable building in compliance with 🔥government regulation🔥, instead people looking to build something like a home, or architects themselves, come to them with a project and they are paid for finalizing a design, aka how the building will actually look inside and out. And then when that design is finalized they come to someone like me who’ll make the parts. You could easily find yourself working with one of these studios or even starting your own after some time. Hell you don’t even have to make real buildings, you can make them in video games or for cgi renders

I can relate to your story : I began my life with the desire to be a musician/singer and felt I couldn’t do it due to my religious upbringing, and the whole starving artist motif that everyone around me had. Even though people thought I was talented I was talked out of doing anything remotely creative. I went to college and earned a degree in Journalism. This is well before the start of all the Internet and computerized everything that we have now. I think people should do what they wanna do they will never know who they are without going through that journey the earlier they do it in life the easier it is and if they start when you’re young their ideas fresh and they have not been bombarded by all the pressures of life right away, I became a reset your channel I like your art and I encourage you to keep going.

I relate to this story SO MUCH. I started out my career in criminal justice / law because art was not an option financially for me straight out of high school and everyone steered me away from it. I worked two part time jobs (coming from a strict immigrant family) in college and didn't enjoy my time AT ALL studying criminal justice. I remember when I was 4 years old I told my parents I wanted to be an actor. They were very supportive at the time, and for a while throughout childhood I did pursue it seriously (some of my fondest memories honestly). But like a lot of other people, when it came time to think about college, societal pressure led me to engineering. Now that I’m working full time, I’m trying to find ways to rekindle my love of performance through streaming, but it’s a process and I’m just at the beginning. This is universe telling me to pursue my passion as an artist. I have a Masters degree in electronics engineering, and like other research oriented scholars I was also applying for PhD programs. As I said, universe is giving me hints, I started moving away from pursuing PhD. It was like I was never meant to do it. I started drawing suddenly all after 15 years. I felt a sense of relief. The first art I made after 15 years healed a part of me, it was like magic. My heart melted, and I was in tears, it took a huge burden from my heart, I felt so light. It was like experiencing true love, my passion❤️

We have such similar stories! Electrical Engineer turned artist here 👋 I worked in the industry for about 5 years (including as an intern) before I got furloughed in early 2020. Just like you, I asked myself if my engineering career was really the direction I wanted to pursue. Considering the crippling stress and mandatory constant overtime it came with, I decided that was no way to live. I just launched my shop earlier this year and am also on the journey to become full time. Keep it up! Despite what we were told when we were younger, we CAN do this! I am so happy for you to have found a path in art at such a young age. I started the same path but at a much later age and after 20+ years in engineering (semiconductor R&D). Keep it up. You'll do even more wonderful things than you already have. I just know it :)

Following your passion and listening to your heart is the greatest act of self respect and self love there is. As a nurse for 25 years, I spent a lot of time specializing is hospice. And I can tell you that the one consistent thing I hear, is the laments and regrets people have over the things they DIDN’T do. Hats off to you! This video resonates a lot with me. I also loved painting and illustrating while growing up, put that aside to get a STEM degree, got a job as Systems Engineer, lost that job, found my passion for art again, found a new job as a Systems Engineer, and now use the income from there to fuel my passion. I don’t see myself opening an art shop soon, but I definitely love spending my free time doing art. Loved seeing this video, and amazing work!

Great video. I can relate to some of this my family didn't support my art studies as a child. It lead me to make decisions in careers in anything other than art. Even though coworkers who would see my art always asked why I didn't go to art school, or why I wasn't working where I could make money with this skill. Fast forward to now the pandemic knocked me clean out of my field, due to health issues caused by the virus. Now I'm researching starting a career in making money from my art. I'm still doing more studies to get my art, where I'm comfortable asking people to pay for it. Hopefully sometime this year I will reach that goal and start to go from what I'm doing to provide for me, and get me where my art can provide for me regularly.

Wow this story really hits home for me lol. You're like a parallel version of me haha I am the oldest of 5 kids, majored in Industrial Engineering, and also would like to create art full time. Even just by graduating I feel my mental health slowly shifting back into balance. Taking art workshop as helped too. It will take time to fully recover from abandoning my passion. Congratulations on following your passion and starting your own business. I am a mechanical engineer who has a passion for drones and aerial photography. I started my aerial drone photography and visual inspection company in 2019 pre-COVID-19 pandemic here in Toronto, Canada. I still work as a mechanical engineer and designer today, as that is what I have wanted to be since the age of 5,along with maintaining my growing drone business on the weekends. I have found the creative release has improved the balance in my life and thus made me happier, not implying that I was depressed. The sense of exploration of my surroundings is now at an all-time high.

Your story hits so close to home. I've been studying and have been working in an education field for at least the past 7 years and I don't find it in my heart to be a teacher anymore. I've made a decision to leave my job before the next school year starts because I just can't see myself being in this profession for the rest of my life. I've always loved making art and doing creative things and I'm finally stepping out to pursue it. Until my last day I'm going to be saving up money and just working on the next step in my life.

I'm happy for you! Everyone deserves to discover and pursue whatever really brings them fulfillment. I had a quite a similar self discovery, but I moved from Graphic Design to Tech. All my middle school to two years in college (a year in art school, another in design) I believed I wanted to be a graphic designer, I quite liked it too and was pretty decent at it as well. But somehow I just grew over it, simultaneously developing a great interest in STEM. I guess the pandemic presented us all with time to really reflect upon ourselves. I dropped out of college a second time, took a year off, and now I am enrolled in a technical uni studying tech. I hope you do great with your business!
