This honestly really helped ... I’m Irish and about to start college. My mind was in between studying architecture and art education. I was very afraid of making the wrong decision because my art course is far from home and if I dropped out I would have to wait another year to start a new course . This helped settle my mind and gave me the information that I didn’t have . Thank you for taking the time to make these videos.

First, don't worry. It takes years to get good at teaching art. If you love what you are doing you will be able in time to perfect your lessons. During your time studying go to museums, talk to visual art teachers you may know, and take a tone of pictures of different art projects you would be interested in teaching. Most importantly, continue doing your own artwork. That includes artwork projects that you may want to teach.

I used to teach design processes in a professional college earlier, but always wanted a place of my own. Love this, I have watched it twice this week! very in depth and you don’t just skim the surface on it. I graduated my bachelors degree in fashion, art and collaborative business 5 years ago and have been working freelance ever since. Freelance was great but Covid has really naffed things up something bloody chronic. I am jumping to a degree in Science and Zoology next year as Zoology and conservation are two of my biggest passions that I would like to teach in future however I was torn between staying focused on my art ventures or going for my degree. Thankfully I have been offered a teaching position at the art centre here in New Zealand, teaching digital art, wildlife, watercolour, fashion illustration etc, and they have offered to keep me on part time as well when I go into study next year. It’s such a wonderful exciting opportunity however I have been absolutely nervous and a bit lost as teaching art is something I have never contemplated. I adore art, it’s something I have loved since kindergarten and developed over my 30 years on this planet. I am confident with my own art but for some reason, the prospect of teaching it to children, teens and adults, has me incredibly anxious and nervous, I was going to turn the job down this afternoon but your video gave me a strong sense of calm and encouragement. Thank you so kindly for sharing your wealth of information with us.

HI there, It really depends on the program you choose to take. You really need to do your own research to some degree to see what program fits with your goals. You should be drawing, painting or any other art form you are use to now and not worry if the art art education programs offer it. Some do and some don't.

I'm currently in New York and teaching art piqued my curiosity. I have a Associate In Visual Arts & Bachelors In Computer Graphics. And, A well rounded art portfolio. I heard that a "Teaching Certificate" is required as well. Is a teaching certificate a requirement for teaching? and where have you gone about getting it?
@artcanchangetheworld53475 жыл бұрын
Hi there, thank you for checking for watching the video! Well, that depends if your plan to teach for the Board of Education. In New York they want you to be certified in the area you are teaching. You need a degree in Art education to be certified and teach in the NYC Board of Education. However, charter schools are different in that they will hire you as a teacher without a degree as long as you are pursuing one.

Hi, do you know of any around the GPA requirement for Bachelors degrees? I want to go into art teaching. I got my BFA in Fine Art in a major that was not my strongest subject, so I had below a 3.0, though most of the poor grades were due to harsh grading in a competitive art environment and not academically based. I was wondering if there are any ways to get a teaching certification with a Bachelors that does not require you to have had a certain GPA. Also, I'm considering maybe attempting to get the Masters in Teaching degree online through a program that does not offer a teaching license, as the online programs tend to be less restrictive when it comes to minimum undergrad GPAs. Then, once I have a higher GPA via my masters degree, go back and try to get the teaching certification at that point. Does that make sense as a potential avenue? Any help would be great, thank you.
@artcanchangetheworld53473 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Thank you for viewing the video! GPAs as far as I know you need to be above 2.8 and as far as credits will depend on what degree and the policy of the college or university you attend. Whatever program you choose please try to explore and experiment with different art mediums and subjects that you will and that your future students would be interested in.

But I know how to draw at least to my ability. Which is exceptional. I guess so I'm just looking for some extra guidance concerning. Teaching the fundamentals in the principles. And whatever else there is, that is supposed to be taught about art.

Hi, I just found your channel tonight and really enjoyed your video. I live in NM and I dropped out of high school mid way through my junior year and got my GED a year or so later. I haven’t been back to school since, mostly because I didn’t know what I wanted to go to school for and I’ve been with the same job ever since dropping out of high school. I have always done art on my own in my free time and just recently it dawned on me that maybe I could become an art teacher. I know that you probably don’t know the guidelines in the state of New Mexico, but me only having a GED and not an official high school diploma, could this prevent me from finding a good job in education? I know that even after going to university and graduating it shouldn’t matter, but would a school be worried about a high school dropout teaching students and helping them achieve the goal of graduating?
@artcanchangetheworld53474 жыл бұрын
Thank you for visiting my channel. A GED is equivalent to a High School Diploma. You should be able to get into any Visual Art Education program that is near you. As far as your background and being a former dropout so was I. So as far I am concerned it doesn't matter what matters is having passion for what you are teaching. Continue doing your own art because that will only make you better as an artist and educator. That will also give you a firmer foundation if you do pursue a career as a Visual Arts Teacher.

Hi there, thank you for watching the video! I would suggest networking and connecting with art teachers who are in the field already. That can give you a great perspective on what many art teachers are doing in the classroom. I also recommend do some research. A great place to start is the NAEA -Nationa Art Education Association at www.arteducators.org/ There are wonderful resources you can pull from there. Facebook also has pages dedicated to Art teachers and if you can plug into one of them you can actually speak with seasoned Visual Art teachers that will help you see what you can do. I encourage you to continue studying fine art and then looking for a good art education program that will enhance what you already know. I hope that helps!

I have been invited to teach art at a community college. I have had six years of college. No teaching education. I’m being hired based on ability. I’ve won art awards, published art in Literary journals such as Stonecoast, won contests into prestigious gallery shows and multiple art walks and galleries. I have taken only one drawing class and one painting class. That is the extent of my art education. I network with teachers, make friends with my teachers. That helped. I got fantastic grades. That helped. I was in college for writing. Not art. I took art as an elective and discovered I’m really good at it. Everything has just sort of taken off from there. You can get a masters to teach or you can become master level and build a reputation as a successful artist and become invited to teach. A degree helps but it’s not a guarantee and it’s not always necessary.
@artcanchangetheworld53475 жыл бұрын
Remember every state does have requirements. In New York, you must at least have a bachelors and continue with a masters in the subject you will teach. In the Visual Arts, you need to be licensed to teach it unless you have a special arrangement with a principal you will need a degree in art education, preferably a Masters. State and City run schools usually require a degree in art education while Charter schools use very different criteria for their teachers they ire. This doesn't mean that Charter schools won't require that you continue your education and get a Masters. I have friends that worked for Charter schools but were required to continue their education in the field a pursue degrees in art education.

I'm transitioning from being a college professor to being a secondary school teacher. (Many are surprised but the academic job market, pay and job security are terrible. Secondary school teaching offers geographic flexibility, better job security, and, in some states, even better pay!) Here's the funny thing: I am an art historian with a PhD and undergraduate majors in English literature, music history/theory and art history. This means, weirdly, that I meet the provisional teaching certifications for English (okay), art and possibly music - despite being, really, a highly trained cultural historian. They wouldn't certify me to teach secondary school history! I'm not really a practicing artist. Sure, I can teach AP art history with ease. But I would be more comfortable teaching World History than how to paint/sculpt/etc. It seems I have found a flaw in the certification standards. Granted, I am an unusual candidate. (I'll be going for English teaching certification for now.) Any thoughts from Art teachers out there on whether or not i should actually seek to certify in art as well?
@artcanchangetheworld53472 жыл бұрын
You have an amazing background but if you are considering seriously to be a Visual Arts teacher you should be doing art as well. Your experience in Art is really valuable non the less and that could work maybe in a High School level. Middle School students are challenging and you have to keep them engaged at all times. Though teaching some art history is good they would get bored pretty fast and need and want to create art in class. So you need to consider if Middle school is the best option with your training and experience. Art history is valuable and might be more excepted in a high school setting in the higher grades like 11th and 12th grade. However that will also depend on the school and what their curriculum is like. I hope that helps.
