I totally agree. Besides my MacBook Pro, I use an iPad and iPhone 11 for music production. DAW’s and plug-ins are about 1/5 of the price compared to the desktop counterparts. There are many wellknown brands making software for iOS. Some recommendations: GarageBand (its free, so you can start right away), Cubasis 2 (it has IAP from Waves), Auria Pro (it’s like Pro Tools), Blocs Wave, BeatMaker 3 (really awesome!!!), KORG Gadget 2, FL Studio Mobile, Akai iMPC Pro 2 and Nanostudio 2.

and you can't forget the AUv3s, these are also substantially cheaper than their PC/MAC counterparts! and they mostly are the same *although there's a few exceptions here and there*

Enrique Raphaël Page Pérez I know. By plug-ins I’m meaning the AUv3 standard for iOS. Also a lot of well known and reputable manufacturers on iOS. Thanks for your kind reply.

Although it has been possible to produce music on iPads - from inception to mastering - for years, the development of the Audiounit and Audiounit MIDI protocols for the iOS platfom has seen many more desktop-based software developers (like Eventide and Toneboosters and Klevgrand) fully embrace the iOS creative ecosystem. I first started producing music on an iPad after s series of Macbook Pro crashes. My entire KZbin original content is currently comprised of music that I composed, mixed, and mastered on my iPad Mini 3 (which I still use). Just about every month there seems to be another big advancement in iOS music-making. Most recently it’s been multi-output functionality for AU plugins - allowing AU effects with sidechain inputs to actually now take advantage of that feature. And as far as the touchscreen interface is concerned, there are just some things (like automation) that require a lot less effort on an iPad. Compare, for example, creating pitched snare rolls in the Intua Beatmaker 3 app vs. just about any desktop DAW. The iPad does a he job more easily every time. I can’t wait to upgrade to at least an iPad Mini 5 to fully explore (and exploit) the power of iOS 13 on an iPad!

It’s the future When Apple releases logic and final cut on it
@XanarchistBlogspot

That will help but Cubasis and Beatmaker are already pretty solid. You can master without normalization for example in Cubasis unlike Ipados Garageband.
@IAMLXGEND
@IAMLXGEND 4 жыл бұрын
Doesn’t matter if they’re already solid. If Logic came to the iPad it would crush all of the above specifically because it’s already a widely used app amongst apple users. They’ll just switch over. Better optimization. Better workflow. Better compatibility between mobile and desktop machines. That’s the whole reason people look forward to it. So they don’t have to use a separate software outside of the one they already use on Mac.

In my opinion not really, iOS doesn't need them. There's new tools coming out that will phase out the ones that were successful on computers. An example of this is Lumafusion the video editor on iOS. it is a quite substantially relevant product that for MOST editors can easily perform all of their usual Premiere/Final Cut/After Effects and all of these programs' work, but mobile. One huge advantage though is that doing so with your fingers is far easier than with a mouse and commands. Especially if you add the fact that you can STILL use commands. Then, the playback is FAR Smoother on Lumafusion than it has ever been on anything PC/Mac based except for perhaps Davinci Resolve which is by far the best editor available to PCs/Macs. IMO, what iOS and iPadOS need, is for people to take more time to realize they don't need these old tools to be ported to these new devices. They need to learn what the available competition is on iOS, since there's probably someone already doing most of it in a far cheaper product that might even be more enjoyable to use. It's just my opinion, but I've been doing music on my iPad since I was 15, and am now 29... I've used my ipad for gaming, as a second monitor, midi controller.... etc. I'm also a 3D Modeler and therefore know a bit about video editing and 3D modeling obviously. While 3D modeling on iOS isn't a thing yet, sculpting digital characters is, and it is SUBSTANTIALLY better than even the best tool on PC (ZBrush) in how well it performs, it needs time to grow into a more complete product but it already is a more enjoyable experience than sculpting on the DEFACTO sculpting software for video games and movies. As for photoshop and illustrator... yeah, well Affinity already did that on iOS and iPadOS and they did it so well that obviously they made a substantially BETTER product than Adobe's photoshop and illustrator softwares. These are also actually software you buy and not software you rent, and they cost 3 times less than a single month of the Adobe Creative Cloud Suite. I ditched Adobe because their software is SO outdated and bad, and actually gets worse every year (why? who knows, my hypothesis is that it's a company of mostly inepts and also with some dudes charging way too high on a monopoly that has been going on for FAR too long). Another example, especially for music production, is miRack. While the VCV Rack vs miRack controversy is big and NOT to be ignored, one cannot ignore the fact that miRack runs SUBSTANTIALLY better than VCV Rack (although miRack is also available for Mac and runs far better there too, so it's not just the device that is good but also the guy who ported it). The port that was done to iOS was so good and utilized iOS features SO WELL, that it effectively did a better job in terms of performance than it's PC Meta counterpart. While VCV Rack is completely in its right to not support miRack because they apparently did act quite shady about the port... which is sad, really... in parallel one cannot ignore that the engineering behind miRack is obviously pretty good and far better than the one on VCV Rack. Besides, can anybody tell me VCV Rack is more useful on a PC or MAC than on your iPad or iPhone? miRack has multi in-out support on both the standalone and AUv3s. It can also send midi and receive it, and process audio/midi so it essentially is FAR better integrated into a music production workflow that is modular by nature *such as miRack and VCV Rack*, than VCV Rack is (as far as I know at least). Since it also runs better on my iPhone than it does on my 3D MODELER/ GAME DESIGNER computer (which is arguably 5 years old at this point).... it is safe to say things are looking QUITE GOOD for the future of not just music production on iOS but simply mobile computing in general. iOS has done a substantially better job at getting the "pro" market though, but this probably will change as more people adopt mobile technologies and companies diversify even more into these ecosystems. Over time, these new apps and companies will take over the old ones. Bye adobe, bye Autodesk, bye all of these dumb companies that want you to pay incredibly high costs PER MONTH for their already obsolete software. Hello iOS, Android, iPadOS, and essentially, mobile technologies.

Lumafusion is great and entirely capable. I’ve used it. But to say Final Cut or Logic “isn’t needed” is sort of far fetched lol. Having FCPX on an iPad eliminates the need for needing to export xml files to be able to use/edit LF projects on a Mac. It would be the same as Garageband on iOS + MacOS. Syncs across all devices. Just go to a computer after saving on iPad, open in desktop. Bam. No problem. No export or transfer needed. Workflow instantly streamlined. Same with Logic. Start projects on iPad. Or finish. Sync. Send to Mac desktop, simple airdrop or iCloud. Open. Zero issues. The competition is cool and all but an app designed specifically by the company for the product they make far exceeds such. This is what Apple is founded on entirely. Marriage of hardware and software. Making things easier and more simple is what Apple has always been about. And while yes, having LumaFusion or Beatmaker 3 for NOW is awesome because there’s no other option, I would be hard pressed to say apple couldn’t do it 1000000x better simply because they are the designers and owners of both the hardware and the software. And if there’s one thing that Apple does better than any company on planet earth, it’s optimization & integration. Also Davinci is great. But to say it’s the “best” is more of an opinion. I live FCPX. Davinci is entirely too complicated for me to understand. I could get it with time, but I’m a simple person. For me, FCPX is the best. For others, Premier Pro. Also you completely forgot to take note of one gaping technological advancement coming next year: Apple Silicon in Macs. So not only will desktop Macs be able to do everything iPads do (minus touch) but they’ll also be able to do what they have already been capable of doing by themselves. Lumafusion may “outperform” Current intel based Macs because of the 8 core Apple-chips they have inside of them but macbooks and iMacs and Mac pros will be getting those in 2021... so iPad Pros with LimaFusion will no longer be the only devices capable of having smooth 8K 10bit raw playback. That leg up will be short lived and as soon as those apple chipped computers come, iPad Pro’s only difference will be its touch interface and 4k camera
@EnriquePage91
@EnriquePage91 4 жыл бұрын
@@IAMLXGEND I agree in many ways with what you said, which is why I don't think we are there yet but I do think it is coming. Lumafusion is an example that is still growing, while software like Affinity's Photo and Designer are now really viable professional alternatives that are even better performant than their adobe counterparts which are essentially a monopoly in 2D production. As for the idea that apple cannot make better software, I actually don't necessarily agree as for example it is known that the guys who best pushed the Nintendo SNES hardware, were not part of Nintendo. That was the team who designed Star Fox and they were essentially doing 3d graphics on a 2d console. Nintendo was so amazed they immediately got involved on all of this. While the tools Apple can create can run perfectly swift, that doesn't necessarily mean they will have the best design ideas for them. If this was the case, why would they have IMMEDIATELY hired the guy who designed one of the most famous iOS instruments, SAMPLR in order to become the lead of their design department for mobile interfaces? Well, because they realized he was a genius who essentially taught THEM how to use THEIR device. This happens a lot actually. It is one thing to be competent at your job, and it is another one to be creative and innovative. While the two can meet, they are not necessarily connected. Regardless of this, even if Apple did create such technology, i don't think that fights my argument since essentially this is technology "for the new computing" which IS mobile computing. While you mention the transition to their AMD chipsets which they can even now design themselves, you forget that these new chipsets are ARM chipsets. ARM chipsets are mobile chipsets which were built for mobile computing. So, by virtue of Macs using them, isn't mobile computing becoming the future already? So as I hope you can tell, I completely agree with you in many ways. I just perhaps didn't transmit my idea fully, because I don't think your comment really fights mine in many ways. While I do agree that some software is still LACKING *3D software, game design software, video editing software*, there are alternatives that are gaining strength every year and becoming more and more relevant and complete. It is not the case today, but it probably will be tomorrow as it was for Affinity's photo and designer which really do a far better job than photoshop or illustrator. Lumafusion might not be THAT software, but it already does a lot of things substantially better than most PC/MAC software, and while this software for desktops might be more "professional", it is poorly built in comparison and lacks the optimization and proper engineering that ARM software tends to have (since a lot of them rely on VERY old code that is not performant). Davinci Resolve as a matter of fact does a lot more than you might think, I don't really use it but it is defacto the best simply because it is the smoothest. It also is known for having the best color grading on the whole industry since like forever, and iti s also a procedural software editor. While you might not like it, I guarantee you that it is used all around the globe at top studios simply because not only is it the most capable editing software available, it also runs BUTTERY SMOOTH thanks to its GPU integration which Adobe lacks completely and also Apple's own alternatives. While you and I might use a different video editor, that does not reflect what the most capable software is. And although i understand that you Davinci is complex and a lot of people might find it hard to get into, if they did get into it the would rather sooner than later end up doing a lot more in a lot less time. This is also a matter of how relevant video production is to you, perhaps you're more interested in pursuing other goals than learning the best software for what is essentially only a part of your whole job, but I guarantee you that the more complex a video gets, the more it could benefit from being done in Davinci. Doesn't mean it's needed, nor does it mean you HAVE to use it, but if you did, eventually you'd probably do better with it. That might take some time which is an investment not everyone wants to make and that is completely ok. I also love the fact that i can start projects on my phone or ipad and then move the computer where I can use more capable but less optimized software to do the things I can still not do on mobile devices, but as I said about Luma I do think 5 years from now, this will be substantially less necessary for most of my work simply because of how fast these little apps are evolving thanks to the ARM chipsets of mobile devices. Once again, maybe we are thinking a bit differently about it but I really do think I agree with you in many things. I still think mobile computing is the future and perhaps apple is the best example of this by incorporating arm chipsets into their desktops. As for software, the damage has been done to these big companies because mobile markets are expected to be very cheap. The fact that Affinity started on mobile means it will naturally be substantially cheaper than Adobe's products, and since it has become even better, well it makes sense to bring it to PCs and Macs.. doesn't mean that you actually need a desktop though, it just means that today this is doab, having continuity between computers and ipads. Will having a PC and an iPad pro be worth it 10 years from now? Probably not for the avarage and even most pro consumers. Unless you're working with AI or something that is still outside of the realms of mobile apps, and mostly it probably will be outside of the realm since it hasn't been adressed by anyone... not because the device won't have the power to actually perform the task. I ultimately think PCs and Pads will end up merging, ARM will take over the whole industry not just Macs. it's just a matter of time. Anyway, it was nice reading your comment! very complete breakdown of what I missed to specify or explain properly. I hope this comment addresses those issues and let's hope the journey of mobile music production becomes even more amazing over time!

Started out attempting to get I to music production with a desktop. Started college and found I didn’t have the time to learn properly. Fast forward some years and mobile music production has become a bigger thing. I try mobile music production on an iPhone and have loved it ever since. Kept hearing that you NEEDED a laptop/desktop setup to truly make great music so I bought into that old-myth. Now that I had the money, I went back to try my hand at laptop/desktop producing and it’s still unintuitive as ever and plugins are a pain to deal with. iOS just works seamlessly. Something about touchscreens and mobility just make working in music a joy instead of a chore, like how it felt on computer

I do own a iPad Pro and have used it for some music production. The biggest downside is lack of Pro Apps conversions and only recently did they finally open the IOS up which was essential without jumping through a ton of hoops. While there are some very good VST's for iPad its tough to compare to things like: Omnisphere, Falcon, Avenger, Serum, U-he, etc. Izotope for mixing and mastering would be icing on the cake. As much as I love my 11" Ipad Pro (512GB), I think it's hilarious how long it took for Apple to allow drives to be accessed (unhindered) through the OS. Android has been doing this since the latter 2000's.. Android could hook up MIDI controllers, Audio Interfaces, flash drives, computer monitors, etc.. all with relative ease. That said, ALL the dope Music Production apps are solely on iPad, hence the reason I own it over an Android tablet.
@IAMLXGEND

There is a reason Apple waits to do these things. They want to have it done right. Android May be first to a lot of things but at what cost you know? No tablet out now has the processing power of an iPad Pro.

@@IAMLXGEND I disagree. It's greed. Just like how Pioneer DJ gives tiny incremental additions/changes to features of the CDJ line over the course of several hardware changes, Apple does the same thing. Whereas, Denon with the SC5000/6000 Prime Decks go all in on features from the get-go, just like Android does. Haha, yet, I own an Ipad Pro & CDJ-2000nxs2 decks. Go figure!!
@IAMLXGEND
@IAMLXGEND 4 жыл бұрын
risquedj it’s business and it’s making a great product. It’s not greed. Android Face ID was first on the market, it never worked and could be hacked. Many years later, Apple releases Face ID with zero hiccups. Samsung rushes and is first to release a foldable phone. Units break, screens glitch, stop working, get bubbles underneath the glass. It then had to be totally recalled. Apple waits until they can do something to the best of their ability. Until the technology is perfected. This is why AirPower wireless charging got cancelled all together. One would ask if it’s all about greed, why not put out a product clearly everyone wants and will surely buy since iPhones now wirelessly charge? It doesn’t make sense or fit the “greed” stance.

@@IAMLXGENDI'm speaking specifically about the ability to connect outboard gear and have it run on the OS. The reason Apple didn't offer that functionality up until now is because iPads have finally reached a price point where Apple can charge the same price as a laptop. Then because of the EU lawsuit, Apple were forced to start introducing USB-C into their hardware. Couple that with IPad Pro users being frustrated with the limited functionality of that USB-C port on such an expensive unit. Apple had no choice but finally add the support. In my opinion, it's still greed. I built a Hackintosh because of Apple's greed. My Hackintosh totally surpasses the speed of the iMac Pro and at a tiny fraction of the cost.

Had an unfortunate theft happen a few years back... lost my whole protools setup. It’s taken me years to slowly rebuild. My MBP was dated (2011) and felt I should get rid of it before it depreciated more. I might have bought myself into the corner of needing a desktop/laptop w the most recent purchase of Apollo 8 thunderbolt w UAD 2 satellite... I’ve been out the loop for a minute and I’m trying to keep it minimal as can be... If was going a controller key route and depending on pulling sounds and doing my own mixes w vocals, Effects w digital sounds.... you think the iPad Pro can hang? And do you think there’s a way to run my Apollo in the iPad Pro?
@IAMLXGEND
@IAMLXGEND 5 жыл бұрын
Yup. As shown in the video, as long as it’s usb-c or can adapt via usb-c it should work. It’ll just drain the iPad’s battery more. As far as effects and sounds and all that goes, iPad is more limited and selective in options for all that but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have good options. Check out Henny Tha Bizness. He produces strictly on iPad and iPad only apps and plugins. But they work just as well. Just know the only things that can transport to desktop are audio files, Garageband files, Maschine files, and ableton files. Ask ally whatever company makes an app compatible with their software.

Depends which one you get. 64gb, 256gb, 512gb and 1TB. Which is 4x as much as my MacBook (256gb) but it costs waaaay more than the $799 price. And yes every tablet and mobile device that comes out now has Bluetooth. And no it doesn’t have the same software as it’s not macOS. Its iPadOS. So it has apps from the App Store for iOS devices. It will have mobile versions. Like iMaschine or Garageband iOS and FL Studio Mobile. There are standalone apps like beat maker 3 that make insane music with crazy features that are built into desktop apps but it’s a completely different piece of software. The cool thing about iPad is you can use it with your Mac as a second screen with sidecar.

You cant use Kontakt or Logic Pro, but there are a ton of pro level apps and daws available. He only shows the apps that are free but if youre serious there are more serious apps, and the major music companies like Korg, Moog, Akai Pro, Arturia, Steinberg, Fab Filter, IK Multimedia, and many more develop apps for Ipad and iphone, and if you make a song in Garageband on the Ipad you can open it directly in Logic Pro and keep working on it. I use it for production, sampling, synths, keys, guitar and bass amp sims. If youre a musician looking at a tablet, Ipads are 100% the way to go.

I don’t know anything about novation circuit but from what I’m seeing it’s a physical product. That’s going to be the main benefit. The iPad just works with whatever apps are on the iPad. No need for hardware. It’s both in 1. If you have a computer and don’t need or want to be mobile, get the novation. It’s cheaper. IAMLXGEND yeah, I just meant it actually does not support all the daws, and I am used to Ableton and don’t want to change daw because I have of all the ongoing projects there etc. but I hope in the future the support of other daws will arrive.

Great video and production! I just posted a video on how I was able to record 32 tracks to my iPad Pro for 2 hours using my Midas M32r and N-Track Pro. What DAW are you using asides from Garage Band?

On iPad? Nothing. Just Garageband.

IAMLXGEND check out N Track it does some things Garage Band doesn’t. I don’t like some of the things about it but it’s got a lot of potential and is always being updated. You can demo it. Only DAW that’s has audio unlimited tracks.

I have been using ipad to record music since the ipad 2 so this is no new information. the only problem with apple is that at each upgrade they do it just makes audio interfaces of devices or wires or headphone difficult to connect or just render them obsolete.
@IAMLXGEND
@IAMLXGEND 4 жыл бұрын
Not really sure what you mean by that. The update to the iPad pro’s make interfaces MORE compatible. USB C vs lightning...

IAMLXGEND it’s when u want to integrate older interfaces. Like a Apogee Jam 96k. If buying new ones then not a problem. Just not a fan of dongles if you need to connect stuff.

If it has an iOS app you can download in the App Store, sure. This is not a desktop OS. You can’t run desktop programs on it.
