The bezel comes in handy for timer too 🤪 I am wearing one now that I prepared earlier in the studio: a Citizen Eco-Drive 200m job which I’ve had for three years. Love it! PS: Handy for kayaking, sailing, SCUBA and snorkelling too!

True! I’m a diver but I don’t take my watch diving. I’d hate to lose it or smash it on a rock or heavy equipment, so it is only used for snorkeling 😃 It’s not really necessary as we have dive computers. I use the bezel every day though, it’s very useful.

Take it from a diver- these 5k + pieces have not been “tools” since like 70’s . The diving industry tools have progressed so far that using a sea dweller as a tool is the same thing as using a hand held file for a job requiring a belt sander. Who are we kidding- dive automatics are simply toys. I have 2. LOL.

Yeah but rolex prices from the 70´s today would be $2k or so. Back than any rolex was obtainable unlike these days. But i do agree with you i have 4 watches and all of them are divers and none of them seen depth more than 2 meters, but still im kinda pissed of with watches which WR is less than 200 meters :DDDD Sry for broken English!!!

@@ronal6300 We have digital dive computers that tell us all the info we need like, current depth, maximum bottom time, MOD, time for safety stops, and decompression recovery periods even. All a dive watch can do is keep track of time and look pretty. However, I do dive with a watch just so it has some good stories behind it.

Dive planning for bottom time at max depth. Computer failure backup. Time dive master requires everyone back on the boat. Time of surface interval breaks. All critical needs for a dive watch even with a computer.

1. You don't dive. I havent been diving in 25 years, and then used a dive computer, not my watch. However, I will offer a few reasons to buy a dive watch even if you don't dive: 1. Face and markings are large and legible. 2. Luminescence is very handy and not available on most dress watches. 3. Cases are stainless steel and very robust = tough. 4. Many come with safire crystal that is very durable. 5. Bezel can be used for timing everyday chores, like cooking. 6. Water resistance is good in case of accidental dunking in water.

Good. But: - "Accidental dunking" is a non-issue if your watch is water-resistant. You don't need a diver for this. - I'd recommend a chrono for cooking. More precise.

@@user-et8vm9cc3t you are right, but: It simply feels safer to know your watch is capable of more, i mean would you walk on a glass floor that states: max 100 kg, if your weight is 95 kg(just a random example)? I would feel better if it says max 500kg. And again, your chrono statement is absolutely right, but: 1. Some people (including me) don't like the aesthetics of a chronograph. The subdials are distracting, the pushers look weird... 2. A Chronograph will always cost more, compared to the "same watch" without that feature. Initial cost of buying, as well as the service.

Dive Watches are still the most reliable and best daily beater watches you can own in my opinion, no wonder that reasonably well serviced dive watches survive decades of ownership and abuse, really can't go wrong with owning a diver!

Tell a person reasons for not doing something and they will probably do it. If you want to scratch the itch just get a $70 Vostok Amphibia 710 ministry case. Then, if you still have the itch get a $350 Seagull Ocean Star.. I have both and love them. I can't even swim.

If you want to scratch the itch and want something that isn't butt-ugly, get the Casio Duro for about $48. :) I'll always have a Vostok on my list, but there is a turd in the aesthetic punch bowl of every model so I've never pulled the trigger. Plus, I've already got two divers and another with the chunky stainless steel aesthetic. It's tough justifying investing in another watch that I'll have to put a NATO strap on.

@Bacon Cheeseberg It's all sort of run its course with me. I won't be going out of my way for sapphire. NATO is the watch equivalent of the nylon Velcro wallet. People are just allowing YT talking heads to convince them that - agianst what they know is true - they actually look good. While functional, they almost always look like total garbage when attached to a non-field-type watch, especially given the alternatives. A good-looking bracelet makes that Bond NATO look like dog crap. I DO use a red-and-white one on my Duro when diving, though, since the colors mirror the activity. Plus it's a little big to put a nice bracelet on and expect to wear on less informal occasions. I'm sure we all have smaller divers we can attempt that with. Same goes for people suddenly believing that a Pepsi, Batman or Hulk watch are anything less than ridiculous, aesthetically. They're still colored watches, people. Their ceiling is among the group wearing Mickey Mouse watches (which were the watches people tried to convince us were perfectly fine in the board room 25 years ago). :) Or another comparision: They're like the "Institute for the Sexually Gifted' T-Shirt I was given in high school. First 5 seconds: Great! Next 5 years: Where can I actually WEAR this damn thing and not look like kind of a douche? Take care.

Yep, they are nice watch, like a defender land rover is a good car... Where it belongs to. I ve got one. Never went in town with it or never took it to track use, prefer my megane r26r. The problem with divers? They are today the non choice for many... Such a shame

As a scuba instructor for 20+ years in Los Angeles County (now retired) I have thousands of logged dives. A watch was an essential piece of gear when I started in the 70's because we had no dive computers, just the US Navy dive tables. In my instructor training through L.A. County I was fortunate enough to go through a day of technician training with U.S. Diver (Aqualung) company, and through that received a test unit of one of their first dive computers. It was an integrated unit which included digital air pressure gauge, depth gauge and amazingly did all bottom time calculations for you. Did I wear a dive watch? Of course I did, as well as backup analog depth and pressure gauges. I also did backup Navy tables, all in case of computer failure -- which it did! Now they work great of course. But the reason I tell this story is for the entire 20+ years I was doing this stuff I wore one dive watch -- a $40 (at the time) basic Seiko automatic diver. I do love watches and over the years I also owned several premium "dive" watches (Omega and Breitling to be exact), but I always hit the water with the Seiko.

Can you imagine the first five minutes of clawing around for a spiny dug into a burrow with an Omega on, not me. Seiko does that work and asks for more.

1)they are designed big for a purpose, and is unnecessary for day to day use, 2)any chronograph or change to time becomes harder to use on dive watches due to the need to make everything water tight 3)color choices become utility and subtlety and color combinations are going to be less of an art due to the utility 4)design of a diver is single minded, keep someone alive underwater, so therefore has less room for fun florishes. 5)they have touches that are ugly at times but necessary so why wear it day to day if you don't have to worry about water when you can wear something without those ugly touches?

I think the appeal to dive watches is their adaptability in harsh environments. The rugged dependability they need under water works well for a variety of demanding environments. Kind of how pick up trucks are so loved in North America. They don't just work for hauling soil and rocks they can do almost anything.

After watching this video critically they only gave one reason not to purchase a dive watch: screw down crowns which are used to press two rubber gaskets together to make them hermetically sealed and therefore require them to be be unscrewed before used, which is annoying. Every single other purported downside could very likely be viewed positively. e.g. -Watchfinder & Co: Black and white dials create a contrast which makes them very easy to read, which is bad. Dials which aren't as legible are better for everyday use, like a silver and grey Cartier (paraphrase). Everyone else: huh?

To someone who loves dive watches, this looks and sounds more like 5 reason TO BUY a dive watch. I have almost exclusively dive watches. Though only moderate sizes. Anything over 41mm or too thick can feel disproportional to me. But that still leaves you with a broad range of options within this category of watch.

The helium escape valve is only usefull for saturation divers in a decompression chamber after the dive and on dry land. Under decompression the diver breathes a mixture of oxygen and helium sometimes for many days. The helium has such a low density and can squeeze past the rubber gaskets under pressure. When decompresion is over the pressure is reduced and the helium expands pushing the glass out. The release valve prevents this from happening. I doubt that anyone's actually used it through in real life.

There is no helium in water. The only time a watch would be in a helium environment is during decompression inside a decompression chamber. Helium would easily leak inside the case under very little pressure. Why a diver would choose to wear his Rolex after the dive is another question. There's a clock inside the chamber and I'm sure he would rather pick his laptop over his watch

A story i heard years ago (which i found on the net in a couple of minutes) "In the story about Conshelf 3 in National Geographic Magazine, it is mentioned that during decompression after 3 weeks at 300 feet a curious thing happened. A small "explosion" was heard coming from the sleeping chamber. It was discovered the crystal on Philippe Cousteau's brand-new dive watch had blown off at some pressure that was less than the 10 ATM that they had been living at for the past 3 weeks."

Hi Gents. I spent 6 years working in the North Sea dive industry as a dive tech and gasman. The average living depth of the divers was 128 meters and a working depth of 210+ meters. They lived on 2% O2 and 98% helium. This gas would get into everything. The living time at 128meters was 22 days then the divers had a 6 day decompression. In that time, many non helium relief valve watches would blow the crystal off the watch. 90% of the divers wore Rolex sea dwellers as it was the best watch for the job.

I don't dive but I wear a dive watch (Seiko SKX) because it can get muddy and sweaty and when I come home and wash my hands I can take it off and blast it clean under the faucet. My dress watches with leather straps are for clean pursuits like dining out or dressing up and socializing. We all need different watches for different activities.

Let me give some of my reasons, because yours are kind of vague: 1. I don't dive. 2. Because of (1), if I do get a dive watch, my teenage daughter will call me a "poser." 3. I don't want to be labelled as a "poser." Especially by my daughter. 4. If I want a ratchet sound, I'll open my tool box and play with my torque wrench. 5. That's only 4. I didn't say I had 5. I don't dive but I do work in an environment far harsher than an office 😆 The ability to withstand all weather conditions and be unconcerned about rain etc is the appeal for me. Other watches I've tried do not cut it. Also the size is appealing, I don't like sub 39ish dials in no small part because I'm not a small person 😆

I guess it depends on what we're talking about. I'd say if we're talking about dive STYLE watches - rather than those that are actually designed to be worn diving - almost none of those ever intentionally touch water. I can't speak for the fashion trends in places like China and India. Although I'd wager that ones measuring 48mm and up are much more popular there than in the West. And none of that white-on-black stuff! That thing needs to glow like orange chicken! :)

You can get a brand new and authentic Seiko 5 mechanical watch for about $50-$75 with a display back case so that you can see the 7S26 movement inside. So worth it! The Seiko 5s come in many different styles and are a legitimate part of watch collecting (IMO). Anyways, a good watch isn't necessarily expensive!

With modern dive computers, a serious diver would never dive with such a watch. It doesn’t calculate nitrogen saturation, bottom time, water temperature etc. They look cool, and they are a fashion statement. I wore huge dive watches for years, but a smaller case like the Rolex explore 2, is a watch you can wear under your shirt, and coat sleeve, it’s much lighter and way more comfortable to wear.

The main reason I'm not buying a Submariner from an AD at the moment is you simply can't. And I have little to no doubt it's because Rolex quite intentionally keep supply very low to increase perceived exclusivity and thus justify their cost and maintain their brand's value. I'm fully aware that you lovely people at Watchfinder have them available, but I have a bit of a mental block on paying more for something second-hand than it is new when it's something deeply silly I shouldn't be buying in the first place.

I have a Rolex Submariner. Never took it Scuba diving, but I have taken it free diving to 50 feet, swam miles and miles with it in the pool and ocean, backpacked in the Sierra Nevada, bummed around the Mojave Desert, banged around the Nevada desert in my Jeep, and then got dressed up for weddings and parties and such, and it always works and it always looks good. Digital watches and dive computers need not apply.

Most people who dive usually wouldn’t dive past 40 metres! A few prolific technical divers may dive to nearly 100 metres but this is well within the capabilities of the Rolex Oyster Perpetual cases. Only divers involved in the Saturation diving industry would find utility in the Submariner and Sea Dweller models! They are very nice items of Jewellery but as the video states they are not for everyone.

Buying a dive watch is like buying a Range Rover. Yes it CAN go off road (deep sea for the watch) but the overwhelming majority of owners never make full use of its ability, more likely just use it as a fashion accessory. Nothing wrong with that, but it means that technical babble doesn't mean anything to most customers.

I was visiting my watchmaker yesterday. When I arrived, he was working on a lady's daydate that had water in the case. It seemed the soft water had come in due to an untightened crown. It was "savable". He commented on how he hadn't seen any water damaged watches in a few weeks. 30 minutes later, a "jeweler" walked in with some-type of Invicta watch that had water damage. Couldn't believe that a "jeweler" would actually want one of those fixed. My watchmaker's son opened it up, and it was an ugly sight (not solely bc of WD). Black gunk on a Japanese Quartz movement, and the untextured laminated dial was bubbled up. Obviously the amount of labor and parts (new movement) wouldn't make any sense. Now, roughly 20 min after that, a client of my WM walked in with a worried look on his face. He had noticed condensation inside the crystal, earlier that day, on his Rolex GMT 16700, and brought it in ER style! Which I understand. He'd owned it from new since the late 90's. When it was opened, there was no visible WD. All 4 of us sighed in relief LOL. It seems the threading on the tube that the crown screws around had worn out. It was only turning twice, but could be replaced. Needless to say, it was a very interesting and entertaining afternoon for me. We were joking about him mentioning he hadn't seen any WD repairs in some time, and then they "flowed" in LOL Moral of the story is keep your screw-in crowns tight guys! Have your water-friendly watches tested regularly! And don't buy Invicta!

Casio mdv106 is my first watch that i bought by my own money, and it's still my favorite one, it has been fallen from top bunk bed, submerged in sea, caves, and water springs on mountain, it got many scratches from countless music concert and dancing wildly on my youth, and above all it still work without any hiccup for me

When I buy some thing for a potentially dangerous purpose, I select a thing that can handle at least 3x the conditions I want it to handle. So if I am snorkeling at 10m, I would use a 100-200m watch typically. If I am doing work with shocks to my hands like impact gun or something, I get a really shock resistant watch. Like that. So dive watches are perfect because they exceed your needs so you never have to worry about the breaking.

My dive watch collection began when I took SCUBA lessons in '75 in HS. I continued and became a dive master, which precipitated my passion for dive watches. It started with a Seiko Capt. Willard, and a Submariner 16610, which has been my daily since '97. Along the way, I have collected several other Seiko divers and Omega Seamasters, plus many other brands. Dive watches are my personal choice because of how reliable, durable, and how easy they are to use. One side note. Early on, I tagged the crown of a dive watch on a boat ladder and bent it. Since then, I prefer my divers to have a crown guard, which is why I have not bought a Tudor, although I think they are an excellent timepiece.

Still not convinced to not buy a diver. I've narrowed down my next watch to the Orient Ray II or the iconic SKX. I'm leaning towards the SKX.

I almost bought an SKX and was going to put a Strapcode Super Oyster on it until I found the Orient Triton. I know the Triton is double the price of the SKX but it is a much nicer watch. It has a hacking and hand winding movement with a power reserve indicator. It also has a sapphire crystal and a not crap bracelet. Plus it's the baby Orient Pro Saturation diver.

SKX is a great choice, especially if you want something with real dive watch cred. The Orient is nice, very pretty and good for wearing to the office, but it lacks the Seiko’s lume and legibility. Also look at the Seiko SRP “Turtle”.

I am 22 I can’t afford a proper watch collection yet, so I have only one watch, my first real keeper watch was a dress watch on leather, with 50m water resistance, I was so bored to have to put it aside whenever I would take a shower, have a swim or do some windsurf (which à do a good lot and I like to keep track of time when I m on the water), unfortunately it got stolen and basically I bought a diver to replace it (Glycine Combat). You really can’t deny dive watchs’ versatility, they are basically go anywhere do anything watches, which is the best reason to buy one

You've shown only one true dive watch, the Rolex Deepsea. AP water resist is notoriously bad. JLC, same. No real diver has roman numerals, or doesnt have minute markers (panerai). Look at the Tag super pro 1000M or the Aquagraph, Breitling Seawolf, or Tudor Pelagos.

I was thinking the same thing. Just because a watch has a uselessly high water resistance doesn't make it a dive watch. If I was actually using a watch for diving, I'd take an SKX over all but the Deepsea. Everything else in this video is best described as "dive style" or "dive inspired" and even that's a stretch for the AP.

I would rather wear a Casio Frogman depthmeter for hardcore diving than one of the mentioned watches. Divers are IMO fashionwatches rather than real tool watches cos there are cheaper and better alternatives. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE divers, but i use the bezel to time when my pizza is ready :D

There's a popular mod involving a Seiko SNZH57 to turn it into a Blancpain fifty fathoms homage, called fifty five fathoms. Instead of the Seiko, I used an Invicta 8926 (the submariner homage) as the base for the mod. Also threw in a mesh steel strap. It is one of my absolute favourite watches.

Reasons not to buy them: 1. You'll not be able to stop clicking the bezel - which is annoying to everyone else 2. Large bezels show scratches easily. The watch will likely look shabby in a few years 3. Who the are you kidding - you ain't diving with this 4. Why lose out on stuff like glass backs just cause you need that +200m water resistance? 5. Honestly, if you were to deep dive would you really put your life on a rotating bezel? wouldn't you prefer a digital timer?

Leather is warmer, softer and slimmer then a steel bracelet. It doesn't scratch my desk when i'm typing and it doesn't fray my shirt cuffs. Leather over steel every time for me. If we are talking about divers watches, mine would be on a nato.

true dive watches are extremely robust, and versatile. if you steer away from perceived dive watches like the rolex submariner, and omega seamaster, you will find much better watches for their actual intended purpose, rather than being fashion statements. citizen, seiko, and casio are the top hitters, and are all great companies. i'm partial to the pre 2020 gshock frogman, but there are many excellent choices. i know a bunch of divers, guess how many own a rolex lol. not to mention, rolex's are too damn small, they're like a ladies watch nowadays.

Well, these are reasons to actually own divers, that being said I love them because they are durable and can withstand any condition. To me honestly there's no point in having expensive divers except fashion tho, you won't be using them for their purpose because you may damage them. I prefer less expensive watches, but these are the ones that will get the job done, real tanks of the watch world :) Good video tho, even if the title was a little bit misleading.

If you have an expensive watch that isn't waterproof, you have to leave it somewhere . In your bag on the beach or the boat where it can be stolen. If your daily watch is a dive watch you've got no worries.
