2019 TRD Off Road, 6M short bed, with all the crap Toyota makes you buy if you want manual and not white. I'm 6'1". Without the adjustable steering wheel I could either get in and out, or drive, but not both. The seating sucks. All the comfort of a chair with no legs. The rear differential sings like an Irishman. Got a new clutch pedal assembly and master cylinder at 7K miles, on a TSB. The new assembly intrudes into the space for your left foot, further reducing leg room. Recall coming on the fuel pump, for which the fix isn't available. Meaning, now I don't go anywhere I don't want to be stranded. The legendary Toyota quality is a thing of the past. At 13K miles, it's a good truck, but it ain't a great truck. If you're long-legged, you might want to look elsewhere. Too bad the Tundra doesn't have a man. transmission.

I just plain love trucks. Doesn't matter who makes them. I just rate them after I get real experience with them. I love the Tacoma but they are made with 5'4" Asians in mind. If you are 6ft tall you are okay. Taller than that, like my neighbor who considered one. He is 6'3. Can't fit in the cab. Dude bought a Subaru Ascent instead. Oh yes, almost forgot. If you are not skinny as a rail like I am. The Tacoma will not be comfortable for you. Plus size families I have met buy 3/4 or One Ton trucks because they need the space and payload. Tacoma doesn't have enough payload for two 375-400lb adults plus cargo.

I bought my 2016 mostly because I wanted a truck with a manual transmission. I sold it because I came to the realization that, for what I paid, I shouldn't have to fold myself like a pretzel to get in and out of the thing. I'm only 5'11", but I have long legs. It just wasn't comfortable for something I had planned on keeping for 10+ years. I also hated the lack of torque at low rev ranges, but at least it wasn't as bad as those with an automatic are dealing with. It's too bad you can't buy a full size truck without a manual transmission these days. If the next gen are a little roomier and they fix the gearing, I'd consider it again, that's how much I prefer a stick shift.

This is just designed to troll and get comments. Also, remember the Tacoma is a lifestyle truck. I.E Mountain Bikers, Dirt Bikers, and weekend to week long car campers or long term Overlanders. Most importantly the Tacoma or 90% of people buy Toyota to because they expect it to still be as capable as the day they bought it at 250k vs Jeeps(highly capable trail rigs stock/upgraded) which start having major issues around 100k. A base model 4x4 Tacoma is 60-75% of the price for a fully loaded Rubicon/Gladiator. Do 15-18k in purpose directed upgrades and it will be an Off-Road powerhouse that will still drive like day one leaving the dealership for a minimum of 250k miles. Hit me up and I promise I can tell you how to do all of the things you want to do for no more than 15-18k. My truck can rock crawl with 35’s, reinforced rear end, oversized leaf packs from Dever or Alcan springs, front/rear bumpers, and regeared. I own a Taco and did everything (2.4k F/R Bumpers(self installed), Regeared 3k gears and install, Total Chaos mid travel kit with King 2.5 Remote reservoir shocks(F/R) 5.5k installed in my garage, Custom Dever Leaf Pack(1k overload) at 1.1k self installed, King Bump stop upgrade 700 self install, sliders 1.3k self installed, BFG KM3 315/75r17 tires 1.3k less 950 for self sell of my tires stock wheels/tires, Fuel ORW’s 870 free tire install, ARB Front air locker 1.3k(free install at time of regear), Hellwig Rear Sway Bar 450, McNeil Racing 3” fender kit 1k + 750 for paint match wrap. If you mate these options to any third gen Tacoma base 4x4 with e-locker(2017-2019) you will be just shy of 50k. You have BULLET PROOF TOYOTA RELIABILITY and still 8k shy of a rubicon and 20k shy of a similar equipped Gladiator. However we had this saying during my time in the service... THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE Let’s have this conversation at 100k, 150k, and 200k and compare how each of the three (If the Jeeps are still running) compare. And type in 200, 300, 500, 750, 1,000,000 Jeeps and see what comes up. And FYI if the average Taco goes 250k plus that is a lot of money you can spend on quality Murcia fabricated parts as you head back to the dealership for a new Jeep worth only 30-35 percent trade-in if it’s original price.

Reasons I bought my 2019 Tacoma; hands down the best looking trucks out there in my opinion. They hold their value more than any other truck or vehicle period. Toyota motors run forever. I'm not into rock crawling, off roading much or towing a lot either, so what it lacks there, doesn't affect me. I do agree the visibility is poor compared to the others, but it wouldn't look the way it does if they fixed that. The interior is basic but it doesn't look cheap to me. GM and Chevy interiors are terrible. It boggles my mind that Tacoma's never came with power seats until 2020, so mine doesn't have power seats which isn't a big deal. I also opted out of the sunroof for the headroom issue. Far more head clearance without it. It's not the quickest off the line but when you floor it in second or third gear, it hauls ass. Never tow over 2500 pounds and works great for my camping style. Easy to park at the mall over a full size truck and fits on trails pretty well and very off road capable. It's a perfect truck for me and others like me. Oh and I don't use it as a boat for crossing deep water like a lot of other people do. I never understood that one.

2020 tacoma has more headroom with the power seat. millennials are born between 1981 to 1996, i dont think its that age group that cant drive manuals but the gen z after them. who would the tacoma be good for?
@FreedomCrawler4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely does, Toyota solved that issue for sure with those better seats. Oh I know what range it is, I unfortunately fall right in there and hate it lol I agree, gen z is probably more screwed. Hell you can’t even buy the new C8 in manual. That’s a damn shame. Tacoma is perfect for anyone not wanting to get too crazy Offroad, not going to tow so much that you would need a half ton truck for or if you’re an overlander. PERFECT for that. Great reliability and resale value.

I'm 6'5 and I'm all legs, I have a 2020 TRD ORP. Mine has a sunroof and I have plenty of head room and can get in and out easily. I've put 8k miles in April driving cross country with a 1200lbs popup from phoenix campers at 75 mph using stock tires and the only suspension upgrades were rear 5100s and a set of sumo springs (black for a 2nd gen Taco). I was even able to do light offroading with that kit on stock wranglers. Having said that, I don't care for the the murdered out black on black interior look, I dislike that the rear windows do not have auto-down. I'm surpised that it doesn't have lights in the doors, which are not just for visibility but also for safety. I’d use the Tacoma for light use of towing, like 3500 lbs and bellow, because I don’t like to push the limits. I’d buy the Tacoma to haul small things like a small trailer & small boat (under 4000lbs). For towing that trailer, I’d rather get a Tundra instead. Trust me if you were to tow, always pick the bigger trucks for towing, if you’re going to tow. If I just want something for off-roading I’d get the 4Runner TRD Off-Road/Venture or the TRD Pro. A TRD Off-road Tacoma & TRD Pro Tacoma works too, but mostly for off-roading. And for the Tacoma long-bed, that’s more for towing, but not for heavy towing. Just only up to 3500lbs that is recommended because you need the extra power. And hauling wood, doing carpentry, construction, and gardening wouldn’t be a bad choice for the Tacoma. But something heavier, like I said earlier, the Tundra is the to go when it comes to off-roading
@FreedomCrawler3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for reaching out. I agree that there’s better options for sure. I was trying to stay below the tow range and agree for sure that a bigger truck is definitely better for that. Trail wise and Offroading though I would never want a half ton truck for the trails. Just too big. 4Runner is a better option for sure in my opinion and loved our 4Runner over the Tacoma on the trails. Have my own options in the pro not being worth it but to each their own there. Thanks for watching!

I think you did an excellent job laying out your arguments. It wasn't overly opinionated.. You're just explaining why it didn't work out for you with very valid points. You've also proven that you're open minded with toyotas since you owned a 4runner before. I'm surprised to see how sensitive people in the comments are getting. Now with that said I am obsessed with this car and would never touch a jeep due to reliability issues but I definitely see your complaints as shortfalls with the Tacoma.

Why bother with the Taco when the 4Runner didn’t meet your standards capability wise? Why didn’t you buy the Gladiator?
@FreedomCrawler4 жыл бұрын
A few things turned me off to the gladiator. Biggest being that it looks like a mullet from the side view. Front is great but the rear of the cab is rough, love the Tacoma look a lot more overall. Another thing was price for what you get. The TRD Offroad price with a locker was considerably less than buying a rubicon gladiator. Will that change in the future with resale trucks, sure but right now I had no interest paying in the 50k range for one that I didn’t really like the looks of. Tacoma has been around for a while and while there are some quirks I feel like it’s a lot more reliable than a first generation truck. Again the future may change that. Lastly I am driving 100+ miles a day and really needed something more long distance friendly in all aspects. Driving a rig on 37’s just isn’t practical for my daily use so limiting myself on tire size and having ifs for the road makes it a nice truck. Overall for the money in the midsize truck range, it’s the best truck out there in my opinion
@scotchbrite12414 жыл бұрын
I agree with you 💯, you have to spend tons of money to make the Gladiator look good like placing 40’s on which is not an easy task. I boiled down my choices 3 years ago to a JK or a Taco. I feel you, I have the Tacoma TRD off-road and have been conflicted since I bought it. Gearing, gas consumption, and price to lift. I initially thought I would lift it down the road but having driven over a year with the transmission less than stellar and just realizing the amount of modifications you need to make just to put some 33 on I’ve decided I’ll just drive stock or sell and look for something more affordable to mod. I am a Jeep Toyota Tech. I know everyone gets into their trucks and they will defend until the end but yes there are issues with the Tacoma. I have a Tacoma and two Jeeps right now. I build Land Cruisers and have had 6 Wranglers. Tacoma has a Throttle by wire that has a Giant delay. It has nothing to do with EPA it is a Huge falling and I have never been in a Truck with a lag this much. Second the Automatic Trans has a shift program that will just make you rather take Uber. I have been left stuck on fire road because truck gets stuck and computer will not let you do anything you need to do to get truck unstuck. Toyota cares more about their bulletproof reputation that is why they will not turbo the FRS and you cannot tune your Gen 3 Tacoma. Well that has made the truck lack in some areas you absolutely need when in tough situations. This is not just my opinion. 2nd gen Tacoma you can address this with a tuner, not 3rd gen. There are lots of forums that have plenty of pissed off customers over this concern. People saying they almost got in accident. Truck tries to go up hill on highway at 1500 RPM's is not going to happen. you step on accelerator and nothing happens until you absolutely mash your foot down. Then it down shifts two gears just to only hold that gear 2 seconds before it starts up shifting again. Having a reliable truck is a great investment but it does take the fun out of it.. Jeeps are less reliable but lots more fun.

I couldn’t tell if it was the gearing in the transmission or if the engine was just plain underpowered but it was the most underwhelming vehicle to drive on the highway. It definitely struggled.

That was the point of the video that a lot of people completely look over. This was specific to me or anyone who wants a truck for this purpose. I meant that after running this truck and a 5th gen 4Runner. FJ80 though? Different story

complaints can be perceived as biased, because when you increase your diameter of tire your supposed to change the rear diff. And sounds like you didn't.
@FreedomCrawler4 жыл бұрын
I agree completely. However going up to just a 285 shouldn’t require a gear change. It’s a minor adjustment competitively to other vehicles you can easily run a slightly bigger tire on. To your point though, just our opinions

Fair enough. I got flack from my friends when i traded in my 4runner for the new rav4. I wasnt going to Colorado with the 4r because the mpg sucks and pushing 35s to CO seemed like such a hassle for me. The 4r was great but i know the rav4 hybrid awd with a RTT on top will make me more happy when i can actually go farther distances without spending hundred or thousands on fuel. You are right about tire size and that was something that irked me. The engine, transmission and gearing just isn't up there with the competition yet. Toyotas just don't make those kinda trucks we fell in love with back in the day anymore.

My 1998 Land Cruiser comes with a full time 4WD and averaged 13mpg. I averaged about 8.9mpg when towing a 21ft boat. I would tow my boat across the US without hesitation if needed. Many people complained about Toyota engines being thirsty. Most people don't complain about how reliable Toyota engines are. Took a fishing trip with a buddy last Summer in his Ford Super Duty when his Turbo failed. Two days later and 2500.00 in repair bill, We don't feel like going fishing no more.

Stock ratios are 3.98, 2.02, 1.32, 1.00, 0.85, 0.71, final of 4.30 It would be better if the ratios were 4.44, 2.40, 1.60, 1.22, 0.93 and 0.71, final of 4.30. Every ratio except arguably 6th needs a bump in torque, and these ratios deliver, plus, the spacing between ratios would be more ideal. old spacing/revised spacing 1-2: 97%/85%, closer spacing so shifting to 2nd doesn't drop the rpm too low. 2-3: 53%/50%, just a little closer, wasn't too bad to start with 3-4: 32%/31%, old spacing was pretty much perfect, so not much change 4-5: 18%/31%, old spacing was entirely too close, which partially defeats the point of having multiple ratios. 5-6: 20%/31%, the last gear is strictly for fuel economy at high speeds, so you only benefit by having a good size spacing. I would probably buy this truck if had the ratios I just specified, but I would definitely buy it with or without the specified ratios if they offered it in sr or sr5 trim.

Top 5 reasons Tacoma over a Jeep Wrangler 1. Obviously reliability 2. Generally costs less : standard features like "power locks" 3. Safer vehicle, "vehicle collision". 4. Resale, jeeps also have a great resale but Tacoma is #1 5. Tow and Payload ability vs. Jeep Wrangler = two fat guys and a cooler of beer and your already maxed out. Maybe the new Bronco or a Wrangler with a "diesel".
@FreedomCrawler4 жыл бұрын

@officialyasir4 жыл бұрын
You’re forgetting that Jeep makes a Gladiator now that has a higher tow rating than any other midsize truck. If you look at actual market prices, resale value of 3rd gen Tacoma isn’t as great as 2nd gen. Also I’d pay a little more for rear disc brakes in the Tacoma.
@MrMikey12734 жыл бұрын
Even Wrangler unlimited towing tops at 3500. 2door 2000pounds. Of course the 2 doors short wheel base is ideal for off road and not so much towing more than a jet ski. Also ride is rougher on road.

Gladiator higher tow rating doesn't mean it actually tows better. But resale value at year per year basis for the Tacoma. For off-roading only the wrangler is hard to beat "cheap to upgrade".

This guy has 2 valid points on the Tacoma that I have dealt with. The first and foremost... parts cost is stupid. If you want a good part, not a Chinese knock off... You are going to be paying $$$$ for any part. Also, I fully agree that with the spartan-ness of the dash. If I am going to drop $50k+ on a basically street driven rig, I would like a less utilitarian dash.
@FreedomCrawler4 жыл бұрын
And don’t get me wrong. I don’t want Chinese knock off parts but if a company could come out with some locally sourced production based parts I think they would kill. Thanks for reaching out and stay safe out there!

Other than that it will be for carrying bikes, my kayak, camping stuff that don't fit in the trailer and commuting to work. Coming from a Jeep Liberty CRD I lived the life with limited and expensive aftermarket parts. The good thing is I want few mods.

I had a 90 4Runner … it was an absolute dog when I moved out west and had to drive up much higher/steeper inclines then back east. That being said, I bought it with around 25k on it and drove to just shy of 200k … it was still as squeakless and solid as the day I bought it. More importantly, I don’t think I put more than $1k in repairs of my own money - not including religious oil changes, filters, tires, etc. I did minor off-roading/muddying/rocking…fun stuff and not abusing it, but more than I should have for my daily driver. It never complained, and when I got stuck it was more my error than truck. Mostly, however, I used it get me and all my friends to the mountain for serious snowboarding. It was a natural in the snow with BFG KOs… add on the chains when WADot required and it was almost unstoppable. (Example 12-15 inches arriving in the parking lot, and it continued dumping the rest of the day with at least another foot, so pushing snow with the bumper and the old 4Runner just laughed.) So naturally I was going to replace with another Toyota reliability 4WD. I had another sub vehicle for a year, then finally bought a new 2008 Tacoma 4dr with long bed 4L auto - to haul the quad. It has never felt as well built as the 4Runner. That being said, outside of frame gate (only coating for me which didn’t fix my rust issues) mechanically it’s been about the same … maybe $2k of my own money on repairs. I now have 265k on it. I don’t hammer it and wonder if my transmission is going a bit or if it’s just me being paranoid. Another great vehicle in the snow! Yep. Wouldn’t tow more 4k. (If you do, you’re kindof moronic not realizing you need a full-sized truck!) But … but… say what you want, Toyota gen 3s are not as reliable … My buddies’ have proven this to me; they will never get 265k without paying way more than me … One is already there. Toyota is no longer what it once was. I’m not really happy with anything now (and was so disappointed with the new Tundra. Wow! Talk about only phoning it in) So, I’m waiting now a third year and a correction to get truck prices back in line. Fact is, I just may lease for 3 years this next go. I’m not sure I ever be able to own truck for more than 150k miles anymore. Sad days.
