Hey Rob, I lifted my 2021 Off Road with a TRD Pro suspension. I added Eibach Pro lift springs to front and Icon AAL to the back. I’m running Cooper XLT 285/75/16. The ride is SO much better than it was stock. Day and night difference. It dampens bumps much better, corners better and is more planted to the road then before. Also, the Pro suspension fixes the Taco lean!

I have a 24' limited with AVS. None of the lifts were tested for the Limited model. My buddy owns a hotrod shop and customizes vehicles for a living. He reached out to a few vendors and even designed a few custom parts. It's not a crazy lift! I'm running 275/75r18s, but I could go bigger for the tires. Unfortunately, I'm not into destroying the integrity of it being a Tacoma Limited. We just wanted to improve on the platform. It is lifted 2/12 inches and some change, and it's perfectly somewhat level in appearance. With just better shcks, struts, and tire. It rides better than it did stock. I didn't sacrifice any of the towing. Nor has the gas mileage changed. Most lift kits are generic and add no valve to the vehicle. Now, I can actually feel the AVS lowering and lifting the truck in the different drive modes. The parts that were customed fabricated were the bump-stops. Mechanically, I like the 4th generation Tacoma. Cosmetically, though not so much.....

Great advice, more should listen to this advice unless you're going full-on off roading setup. Yes,bthe stock plush ride is worth way more to you. The tire size upgrade using hybrid off road treads looks great. Trim about 2" off that huge front lower valance plastic (the snow plow chin). Remove it but it can look bare and odd. Personal preference I don't like the look With OR Without the valance. The only real purpose of the valance is saving some buffeting at highway speed, it doesnt really matter. So followed lines, taped, sharpied and cut it with the electric grinder, tapered it and sanded. Looks stock. Also those super long stock front mud guards....take those off OR swap the front out with Husky guards, which are a good 2" shorter. Rears OEM and Husky are very similer. Not necessary to change those. Finally de-rust the rear drums and paint them with rustoleum semi-gloss black. Also paint the front calipers along with the inner section of the front rotors (only the part that shows when the wheel in on). Plenty of videos on the subject. However I recommend good taping and don't use spray. Use the brush-on can of rustoleum. Do a few coats and let it dry well. It'll be thicker and last longer. Don't paint the mating surfaces to the hub and the wheel. Looks great and doesn't cost much except a Saturday of time. All these little changes makes the stance look good and clean, while saving money and not wrecking the ride. Or having those spacers wreck your shocks, bottoming out and touching the arms. If its your everyday truck, and doesn't see any off road. With occasional Lowes and household duties. Guys dont spend 1000's, save your cash for fun stuff like vacations and trips. This is just a normal guy setup.

I've got a '21 Tacoma TRD Pro with the stock TRD Pro suspension and stock TRD Pro 16" wheels (Gulf coast version of the wheels, which is apparently different from everywhere else but I _think_ the offset is the same at +13mm, about an inch less "pokey-outty" than what Rob has here). I have 265/75R16 Falken Wildpeak AT3 tires on it. They measure just shy of 32" diameter top to ground at 35 PSI with the truck on level ground. They actually DO rub, but ONLY if I go over a bump with the steering at full lock. I agree, it's a great size tire, and I wouldn't go any bigger because you'll likely start a chain reaction of modifications to make everything work right. I've read somewhere online that 285/75R16 tires would fit a stock TRD Pro, but my experience distinctly says "no."

Interesting. I just bought a brand new 2023 Tacoma TRD Off-Road last Friday. This last Monday I went over to one of our local off-road shops to start looking at mods. I ended up ordering some Bilstein 5100 shocks, MaxTrac 2.5" spacer kit, Fuel 16" wheels with a -6 offset with some Toyo MT's in yup, 265/75/R16. The lift is minimal and more for leveling but I will see a small increase in height. I stuck with the 265/75's because I don't want to ruin the ride but I will be taking the truck off-road fairly often and wanted the benefits of a little bit extra height and the benefit of a more aggressive and capable off-road tire. Stuff should come in and get installed on the 14th so we'll see how I like it. Great honest video, thanks for sharing.

Where the ride quality is lost the most is in the loss of down travel. Many lift as high as they can, when the wheel can’t drop independently of the truck, also putting the geometry at a disadvantage in the initial stroke of the shock/spring combo all causing a causing a harsh ride (the chosen shock and spring can can have an effect no doubt, but the single biggest issue is loss of down travel). Secondly unsprung weight is a large factor on both ride quality, handling and overall performance. I use a 285/70 17, load C that is lighter than a 265/75 16 load E. I give up absolute height (about 2” upfront over stock) for immaculate ride using extended travel fox coil overs so that my truck is sitting just over halfway above the middle of the travel. Truck rides like a well controlled Cadillac on the road and a sports car that loves to be pushed in the dirt. I will stipulate that the truck in stock form is far more capable than what most people will ever use, buy it drive it and adjust slowly. Do just wheels and tires as you suggest. The look is great ride should be pretty darn good and it’s much more cost effective if you don’t need or want that extra height or capability.

On my Superduty I had a set of 315s that were huge on 17s. It looked super cool. The down side was mileage and they would throw road splash on both sides of my mirrors and up the sides of the truck. They also made my windows dirty resulting in scratched glass when rolling them down. My steering wheel also needed more effort to turn. Big huge tires look cool but they destroy your paint and shorten the lifespan of bearings and suspension parts. I am going to first try your approach on hers. Its hers and I don't want her to be unhappy. The other down side is aggressive tires are super noisy on the highway.

If you're only lifting for esthetics, this is fine. If you're looking for functionality, it's not going to give much of a lift over stock. Also, keep in mind that a tire that is 1" taller than another, you're only gaining a half inch in ground clearance. Measure from the center of the wheel, not the ground to the top of the tire.
@jonathanmorgan49163 жыл бұрын
Hey Rob, yeah I think you gained .5 inches as that is half of your diameter increase. What ever it is it looks nice :). I asked my mechanic friend about the ride quality you are referring to and yes, low end lifts often reduce your ride quality. He said his boss had just had him install 19,000 dollars worth of lift kit on his raptor and the ride quality was amazing. He told me DO NOT CHEAP OUT ON YOUR LIFT. Spacers are garbage. Actual suspension lifts increase travel. After hours of conversation with him I started my information quest and ended up settling on Fabteck’s nicest 3 inch lift. New resi shocks and coils all four corners, new leaf springs, new UCA’S. Increase of travel front and rear to 10 inches. From what I have been able to learn from other professionals that install these systems, the ride quality should actually be better than stock, let’s hope. Kit has been on back order for three weeks and shipped today. Already have the wheels and tires waiting. Went with some bronze Icon compressor wheels 17 x 8.5 0mm offset and wrapped them up in some 285 70r17 BFG KO2’s. Can’t wait for it to get here. Oh, truck it’s going on is my 2020 Barcelona metallic red TRD off-road. It took over a month of research to establish wheel selection, offset, backspace,tire size. Happy to share what I have learned with anyone. Bout a 6500 dollar mod.

Sounds good. What are you doing about the CV axles? With that height, the angle change can cause damage.
@jonathanmorgan49163 жыл бұрын
@@RobMotive I too was concerned about this issue. I called Fabtech and questioned one of their technicians on this exact subject. What started it was me going through the parts list and not seeing any diff spacers included. I was informed that the diff spacers included by some other companies (not naming names) actually do more damage. These spacers only drop the front of the diff, essentially tilting it. This creates problems as the fluid can not lubricate properly out of level. To properly drop the diff one needs to also drop the back of it where it is bolted to the frame. Fabtech believes that this is actually more damaging than the angle created by a mere 3 inch height change. That is why they do not include them on the 3 inch kit. I was also assured that the angle would not create long term problems down the road. So as of this point I feel reassured enough to take it off of my possible problem radar.

If the tire is 1.5 inches taller you gain half that in lift our .75 inches.. All great info as most of newer truck owners don't really off road seriously...

Aloha and good morning Rob 🙏. Your analysis are valid to recommend and reconsider the lift option for the Tacoma or the Gladiator. The cost to using and to install are enormous. Plus, you stated earlier your prior video that the ride and fuel costs will be rough and expensive. Plus, you stated that it's not very smart to damage your vehicle in doing off-road activities as the repairs are too expensive. Many consumers are benefitting from your wisdom and experience with your humble honesty for not lifting the Tacoma or any other vehicles itself. Tremendous video Rob. 😇😎🥳🤠💥💫👌🤙👍🤜🤛🙌🙏👀

Completely new to this but really enjoyed your video and love your setup. Looking to move from Ford Edge to Tacoma. So here's the stupid question (like I said, just learning about this). To get your -10 offset do you buy wheels with that offset or do you add spacers or something else? Thanks for your patience.
@RobMotive Жыл бұрын
Hey Robert! As they say..."No question is stupid"! Ask away! You can go either way actually (to move the wheels/tires out). However, I'd go with a negative offset wheel to achieve the goal👍

New Tacoma owner here. I put a shell on and plan to build a platform for storage and camping. Should be about 500-600 lbs maximum with everything installed. I would like to have some support in the rear so my suspension doesn't degrade over time. And I'm not eager to install a whole new suspension. Would your method in the video be my best option?

I spent $35 for some Streetrays top plate spacers (.5” thick spacer = 1” of lift) and I didn’t have to disassemble the front coilovers (they just use the stock upper bolts and come with new nylon lock nuts, which are shorter so they fit on there fine and safely). Best part is, I kept the factory ride, got a 1” higher, and spent almost nothing for the front since I put them in myself in under 2 hours. I also got a 3 leaf progressive add-a-leaf in the back and it rides the same as it did before too (if there’s any difference in ride quality, it’s not enough for me to notice at all - but I have more payload capacity now). After adding a camper shell right after the lift, I’m sitting exactly 1” higher in the rear that I was before the AAL and the shell. The AAL was about $220 and it took about 2 hours to install myself also. All together with a Firestone lifetime alignment afterwards, I’m in to the whole thing for right about $425 total... 1” lift all around and I maintained the factory rake and ride. For just a 1” lift, I couldn’t justify spending the money to replace the front shocks with 5100s like most people, especially when my stock Bilsteins only have 8K miles on them. Super happy with how it all came out. I’m thinking after looking at your stance Rob, I may have to get some 1.25” wheel spacers (which with my stock Off Road wheels, would be about the same as your -10mm offset wheels). Do you have any rubbing at all with your new wheels and tires Rob?

Without any lift there is some rub.

Nice. You traded the Blue one for the same same MGM color. I been using the same setup +1 tire and took off steps. Hard to believe it's been 5 years I've had it like that. Still get people asking me if it's lifted. When you live in an area with a lot of parking garages the lift can also limit where you can park.

Noticeable, particularly filling up with gas. I have a 2011 SR5 with 265/75/16’s, stock suspension (too soft) and stock rims. I’ve owned the truck since new. 4 liter w 4 doors and 6’ bed. You will find that when you fill up your fuel economy seems to have magically gone down via the trip meter reading. I’m sure the slightly heavier / less aerodynamic tires vs stock play a roll / more insprung mass for the engine to push - but the slower rotating tires play a roll too. Don’t know how to recalibrate the onboard computer to get a more accurate readout, but you will notice the diff.
@acousticguitars12317 күн бұрын
Also you could not put bigger tires but slightly smaller tires to correct the gearing problem, then you really have saved a ton of money and you can still off road and look cool. that is what I plan to do but I will also do a leveling kit to make the stance better!

I went with 275 75 16 on my 2nd gen. It did rub when I was turning hard with a dip in the road but only very slightly on inner fender liner. I went with this size because I would have a spare same size. Tried some Cooper tires from Pep Boys. 3 out of 4 were out of round so I kept the good one as a spare. I had to just about force the Pep Boys manager to come take a ride with me sir and you will see why I am not buying these tires. After one ride he agreed and refunded my money. I got to keep the spare for my troubles.

Great video! I’m still in my 2012 off road. When I do buy new I will leave it alone! I kept breaking leaf springs so added a leaf. Truck looked like a friggin hot rod! So then did 1.75 billstein in the front and new bilsteins in the rear. The truck rides tougher than anything I’ve ever driven and I’ve had TJ jeeps! Also running 265 75 16’s but they’re E rated which doesn’t help.

I respectively disagree. Leveled my 2022 TRD Off Road with simple 3" spacers in the front, 1" in the back. Changed the wheels & tires to 17" Method 704s, and the rubber is 285/70R17 KO2. This is how Toyota should have sold it and it looks and rides great, way better than stock. Of course, ovtune myself, I wouldn't pay anyone to do this tune for me. In a year before I go off-roading plan to replace all 4 corners with top of the line fox gear but that's a totally different project and ride & double the $$. Today it's just a very cool daily driver. I spent under $4K. You would love love love driving my truck today.

The only lift I plan to do on my 20 TRD is a rear add a leaf for towing and a body lift if I can find one which is the main goal since it makes maintenance and cleaning considerably easier.

@stevepadilla972921 күн бұрын
My Son has the Tacoma with that small door and not a Four door truck. The suspension is stiff, I believe it’s meant for a work style truck. The back of the truck is about 2” inches higher than the front. What do you think about those spacers to install on the front shocks? Those tires and wheels look great. He has stock 17’s on his truck, I am going to pass this on to him, I wanted to buy him tires and rims, this would be cool.
