I've been wearing chronograph exclusively since the mid-70s and have always found uses for them. I've worked shift-work most of my life and mainly worked alone, so timing my individual tasks kept me on my toes. I could see which tasks took longest and helped me see where time loss was evident. I found dozens of uses for chronograph. Non- chronograph watches look like little clocks. Chronographs look like watches.

Why can't you just use a dive bezel?
@user-kd2ez2mb3c6 жыл бұрын
If you are a chef or a cook, you will understand why. In cooking on many instances, precision is vital, to the degree of seconds, that may make or break a dish, and thats where a chrono does the job of helping its user keep precision in minutes plus seconds. The bezel does not confer that level of accuracy as it does not give clear indicators to the degree of seconds. Hope that enlightens you mate.
@gmansplit6 жыл бұрын
Max Lim If you really want to the second accuracy, surely a quartz Chrono would be better than a mechanical one. Especially since you'd get your watch all dirty when you touch it to start the chrono. Seems like a G Shock 5610 would be ideal.
@user-kd2ez2mb3c6 жыл бұрын
gmansplit why would I get a quartz then? That defeats the purpose of appreciating watch mechanics and horology. Why not tell that to many famous chefs in the world who also use the chronograph function too? There’s always a reason. Of course chronographs are delicate and get dirty, but that’s the whole point and joy of being a watch lover and someone who cooks, it’s all about relating experiences. The ability to keep your chrono clean while cooking. How about a diver who uses a dive watch? Surely saltwater will gradually corode the Watch through viscous friction. Tell that to them as well. Tell them that they might as well get a quartz diver.
@Boss-xn3on7 жыл бұрын
ok then there is no reason for a watch because you have the time on your phone ??? Stop nit picking, Chronographs are a must have in a collection. They look nice and can be very useful at certain times.
@ChiTownTx6 жыл бұрын
Think this comes down to the individual and the situation or profession you find yourself in the most. For example I don't own a diver, because I am not a diver. Nor do I ever find myself in a situation in which I swim enough to warrant one. I do however have to take various timings though out the day at work. Sure I could reach into my pocket 30+ times a day for my smartphone but having a basic timer on my wrist is so much easier. In fact I find it so much more convenient to me that I pretty much always wear a chronograph even when at home. Got a Speedy Pro for work and a JLC Master Chrono for home or a night on the town. Two chronographs and no regrets on buying/using both.

Unlike most chronograph wearers, I actually use the timing function. Yesterday, I used it to time one of my Thoroughbred horses over flying furlongs. Ha ha. Actually, it was boiled eggs.

So, having a chronograph on my watch is actually part of my EDC for timing students' task completion speed. However, i do agree that it is largely a romantic complication for the vast multitude of cases. And agreed, it does make many watches look much more awesome.
@mannycalavera23356 жыл бұрын
In academia at conferences and seminars people are always mismanaging their time during presentations. Rushing near the end or constantly asking the host how much time they have left. A chronograph allows you to pace yourself and be constantly aware of the time you have left. With everything going on you typically won't manage to do the same with just the time (even if you do remember to check when exactly you started). I also like to use it when I host meetings. Making sure we spend an appropriate amount of time on each topic. I think the use of a chronograph makes me a better chairman. The main benefit over a phone or the rotating bezel of a dive watch is that it is much more elegant and discreet to use in public. I once used a loud clicking dive watch as a way to make sure no one spends more than 5 minutes talking at a group's "week start" and I felt kind of awkward. First and last time I used a dive watch for something like that. With a chronograph people are barely aware you are timing things. I think in this video you are mostly thinking of things you would use a chronograph for in your own professions and lifestyles. But there are a lot of people with professions and hobbies where they need to do things for very specific amounts of time (or have to know the length of time they have been doing something). From soccer coach or baker to yoga instructor. The truth is that a quartz chronograph would be more useful for those things. But where is the fun in that?
@the1916company6 жыл бұрын
Manny, we love hearing about your hands on experience using a chronograph. It's a different way to utilize the complication than just timing a race or something more generic. Do you find the subdials too small for when you're presenting or hosting a meeting? Thanks for sharing! - WatchBox Team
@mannycalavera23356 жыл бұрын
@@the1916company Ha a reply! Thanks. When legibility is sacrificed for design it makes the chronograph feature a lot less useful. I think you should be able to read a chronograph at a glance the way you read the time from the main dial. Contrasting colors help with that. Which is why I am a big fan of panda dials. It combines a great style with a very useful design.

To time precisely what your doing down to the second or to a thousandth of a second in some cases. 2. The romance of watching the sweeping hands of a complex mechanical device do what they do. 3. Combined with a tachymeter allows for rapid calculations of how fast or slow you are in the blink of an eye. 4. To know that you have something of historical significance from the invention of Louis Monet, to something that played a significant role in artillery, racing, space exploration. 5. Just knowing that you are getting something that is cool as hell!

I'm myself using an orient day/date with a blue dial since 10 years & honestly, it's a very good watch. But , while watching your videos from time to time, i just found myself turning into a watch collector simply because of the looks & history. But also because I'm greatly appreciate automatic & mechanical movements, may it be Chinese Seagull, Japanese Miyota's or Swiss movements. The emotional person pays $23,550.00 for a new ROLEX DAYTONA ,shows it to everyone, and claims it is a good investment. ( Everyone thinks it is a fake .) The Logical person pays $300.00 for a vintage ZENITH, $1100.00 for a new SIG P229 Stainless Elite, and $ 20,000.00 on a small piece of real estate ( all of which will appreciate before the Daytona). I bought a chronograph cause I loved how it looked. Haven't used the chronograph feature yet.

If your gonna get a cool chronograph, get one with a solid warranty and customer service. I own a shinola runwell chronograph, and i feel safe in knowing it has a solid lifetime warranty with great customer service. If an accident dose happen, the warranty covers it and they may even repair it

All true. Except that we love irrational purchases in this hobby!

I agree, who needs a mechanical with today's technology? We do!!!!

Chronos look cool but they’re more hassle than they’re worth. The take away from the stored power in the mainspring is a very good point

everything you say is right but I like chronos very much and nothing can change that

Ka, I agree. I've got 3 quartz Seiko chronos; Solar Chrono Divers, and a "Flighty" (a "Speedy" rip-off for FIVE THOUSAND dollars less). And I agree with Fed, chronos ARE cool; I like they way they look.

I have a simple idea in watch collecting... My prized pieces are always mechanical and I keep them separate. I rarely wear them. However, if possible I acquire the same model with a quartz movement for simplicity. I use those everyday.

The Breitling M1 Chrono avenger is Water resistant to 1000 m and because the chronograph pushers are engaged magnetically you can use the chronograph function ......Yes.....UNDER WATER...!

The same could be said for having a minute repeater or even a Tourbillon. What use do these 2 have or the same argument for fine watch making. We might as well all wear a Casio quartz….

almost agree on drawbacks but the most important: chrono is the most sexy and iconic complication. Having a chrono in its collection is a must have: at least an Zenith EL PRIMERO. the most iconic and performant!
