My hubby brought home the cutest little duck that was abandoned and scared. It was only... maybe a week old. I took care of it and it started thinking that I was its Mom. I thought it was a girl and called it "her" for months. Its wings were a bit deformed and I thought that it would never be able to fly. It fell in love with my dogs. I named it "Big Wings" so it wouldn't feel bad. Today....it is a he, and he is a Muscovy. He finally took flight about 8 months old. I was so proud of him. When he was little, he was afraid of his small pool and I taught him to put his head under the water. He mimics most of my movements and is my crazy little duck. He now has a full mask and thinks that he is a dog. I love Big Wings!!

We have Mallards and some mixes this year but we normally have raised Muscovy ducks in the past. I don’t believe I let them nest their own because I harvested the eggs. I incubated to hatch some then I would raise them for the season for meat and only leave a few females and a drake for the winter. That seem to control things pretty well so it wasn’t too overwhelming.

Homey, y'all need to build a duck deck & spa! Just get some scrap wood, make a square 10' x 10' slatted floor (1.5" gaps between slats allows poop to fall thru) add vertical posts (10" deep, 36" high, so ducks can walk under 24" high floor to seek worms & bugs beneath and refuge from storms) around it, surround with 24" sheets of plywood/drywall/plastic/mesh to reduce blowing winds, but leave openings for entry/exit, add a cheap kid's pool for water & maybe a feed pail. Add an old beach umbrella or make a partial incline roof against strong sun & rain, especially for the chicks. Modify as needed, I've never actually done it, but seems to me a practical idea. Happy ducks make happy homesteaders!

It is very strange how a duck that was introduced in the 60s as ornamental value is now being considered invasive. It is not invasive. It's basically now considered undesirable. People are the worst. It's strange that people try to keep down the population of everything to include the alligators, which were the ones who were keeping the duck population in check. I was born in Florida and raised in Ft. Lauderdale. These ducks have always been around . So yes the real issue is too many people in Florida and the area is over populated. Honestly, great timing with your question about them dirtying the water Jenna, because this is the first year I'm really seeing that happen. My solution has been to keep more water buckets out, and that way the ducks are only dirtying a couple. I am willing to take that as a trade off, however, because the few of my birds that are spending a lot of time in the goat barn/pens this year are nonstop foraging in the wasted hay looking for bugs and I am positive I will have less of a parasite reinfection issue because of that.

These ducks can fly very well so you need to cut there wings often as possible, my father use to mine them, studying to start back something of my own

I thought of one reason on my place, I'm on 5 acres in N. Louisiana and I usually have free ranging peafowl. If you know peafowl then you know they are very skittish and they think they chose to have you, right?!! Not us choosing them. So for me, the peafowl have top superiority or the place. And only once I encountered problems between a Drake and a peacock but it wouldn't stop and Im not going to allow them to fight so I sold the Drake.. I agree though that Muscovy ducks mostly get along with all other animals. I'm pretty sure the one with the problem was the Muscovy bc I also had geese at that time and I've never had a "big bird conflict" other than that time. I'd be interested in a video about Muscovy keeping along with geese and other "big Bird" stories bc that's the best education there is, hearing others experiences.

Just butchered 10. uploaded a short of how they greet me almost every morning. Nothing better then a quiet breed of birds, I have about 70 of them big and small, still need more to have egg and meat for sale, safe to say mornings are epic now. I find them to be very private nesters, they are experts on finding hidden places to make their nest.

I have 2 muscovy’s and 4 call ducks and the Muscovy ducks are MEAN. They hate us but 1 of them is nice ( a bit )
@marrisaduke31832 жыл бұрын
I feel like no one mentions that muscovies can actually fly. and that you do have to clip the flight feathers.
@FableHillFarm2 жыл бұрын
That is true. It always amazes me when I chase my biggest drake out of the barn when he's up on top of hay bales trying to gobble up the cat food and he takes off and flies out of the barn. They are surprisingly agile and they can definitely take flight. Sometimes mine will make laps around my hay field.

Sister, I agree with you 💯! I have alot myself but you start to want one or two as let's and then when one don't want to be apet and more comes it's just ❤️ breaking. My husband is and animal lover like no other bit yes it's experience.💯 We're here in Tennessee and it's a little warmer then where you are so here they come ya know?... I told him we would save alot of money PERIOD.💯 But what I wanted to ask is should we just keep the one that's a pet he acts like a dog but it's only because he's got a cataract in one eye and the other one is not that good either but he so sweet and with the other makes out there even the ones he had have jumped on him if we let him outside. What do we do Sister?.… We're lost and don't know what to do? We hate to get ride of them I wish I could show you these crazy patterns that he had which is name is Hopi with another female. I've never seen these patterns before they're jig Jag checkerboard every which way but loose they're just gorgeousthey're black from a black-and-white mail and form a grande white female and they came out that color just crazybut we just can't keep on and I don't know what to do with them I don't have no clue and we're out in the country and we got like almost 2 acres of land but it's just not enough and we are close to a good-sized road and across the street a little ways is a creek and I'm just scared they're going to go that way anyway but they really haven't left the grounds but they are getting up into the trees in the front yard and I know that they can see that Creek so I don't know and that's some of the younger ones that are doing that so if you could give me back some information that would be so grateful and helpful for me and my husband thank you for this video it has helped tremendously thank you and God bless you honey! 🤗💯🎊

Hi there - thank you so much for watching. Love hearing about your animals and you can definitely send me photos through the farm FB page if you'd like to show me what patterns you are referring to! If you can keep the bird happy and healthy and you enjoy having him as a pet, I would keep him. He sounds like a nice boy. It's too bad he has a cataract, but if he gets around fine, I don't see the issue.

John 3:16-21 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

So I bought a duckling, and yes I had no clue except that I had some wild ones to my pond, well she brought to the chicken coop where I raised her... big mistake.. a couple boy friends. Okay cool babies in the way; yea no they were mixed her having bred with traveling ducks and couldn't be sold.

I strongly disagree with your opinion. We have 9 Muscovy ducks and in my opinion they are much friendlier then Pekins. Our Pekins were incubated and hand raised but ran away from us since day one. We can’t even get near them. As for our Muscovy’s they have always been very friendly unless it’s mating season and the drakes get protective of the hens. ALL ducks poop a lot, there is no difference in any of the other breeds. The hens make good mothers as well. We keep our ducks as pets, we would never consider butchering them, we love them and they trust us. I don’t understand how you could send a pet to freezer camp a day after they were sitting on your lap. I’ve never had an issue with them wandering away ever, and they are free range. You really should not discourage people from raising Muscovy’s. Please allow people to make their own choices and judgements. Everyone is different and just because this happens to be “your” personal experience. Muscovy ducks are quiet and do not quack loudly and disturb others, they make gentle sounds. It’s fine to have a personal opinion, but as I said, allow others to have their own experiences.

I think you may have missed the point of this video, as many of the comments I made were said jokingly and are actually encouraging reasons to have Muscovies in my opinion. In regards to butchering ‘pets’, it is actually illegal to breed Muscovies for anything besides meat production due to their invasive species status. You’ll find I have many videos toting the awesome qualities of these birds and why they are wonderful to keep around. Thanks for watching any ways!

I've heard they are low in fat. Which I see as a negative. Duck fat is after all delicious. So I think I'd rather prefer a breed with more fat on their body.
@FableHillFarm7 ай бұрын
It is true that in most scenarios, they will never put much fat on. They are considered a very lean bird. I do love duck fat myself.
@carltonclark519410 ай бұрын
really it is not true that they have alot of babbies compared to other ducks most other ducks breeds lay 200 or more eggs a year where as muscovy ducks only have 75 to 120 eggs per year so muscovy ducks are the lowest egg producers among ducks i think really the only bad thing about muscovy ducks is they can fly but if you keep then in a pin or kennel this is not a problem if you dont stay on a farm and want to keep ducks this is the best one to pick because they are quite and will not bother your neibores and if they can not see them they will not even know you have them
@neosapienz78859 ай бұрын
It is true. They can have up to three broods per year, the broods are pretty large (average for us was around 14-16) and they are very good parents (80% survival for ours-and we had snappers, snakes, mink, hawks, and other predators). We had an explosion in year 2. It was shocking, actually. We gave over 50 away. Maybe we just had a ducktopia on our farm.

My neighbors feed my muscovy. I give them breakfast in the morning, then like hobbits, they wander over to my neighbor and get second breakfast. My neighbor on the other side used to feed them until they moved. The new neighbor doesn't feed them, but there's a few that will head over there when they see him outside and "hang out" with him. Also, good luck butchering them. I've killed and butchered lots of animals. I can't bring myself to kill my muscovy. I watched a video on butchering ducks, and the guy had muscovy. He killed the duck, as you do, then started crying. And this wasn't some city boy that lives on soy lattes, either. He was fairly burly. I saw that video and couldn't help but think, "Yup, that'd be me too." Instant regret. One lady I get muscovy from when I had a fox kill 12 or so of my ducks one really hard winter, was offering to just give me some drakes because they had too many. And deep down, I knew the reason was that none of the people on their homestead wanted to butcher the muscovy. I've seen her son dispatching rabbits with a hammer, too.

What am I gonna do? Eat them of course! 4 females (and 2 males) keeps us in more than 1 bird a week year round. That single bird gets dinner for 2 to 3 nights (male vs female (females considerably smaller)) for 2 adults.
