The 90's was NOT ok. That was a time that grunge was a big deal. It pretty much destroyed headbangers ball. I totally remember Pantera being like a flag for metal bands. A lot of cool bands began to emerge from that time due to them making metal awesome again.
@coverkillernation8 жыл бұрын
grunge didn't 'kill' metal. headbangers ball suffered the fate of most shows with decline and eventual cancellation. Metal's swelling point wasn't going to last forever, just like any other musical movement that defies the construct of pop culture. Pantera's shift in sound led them to become a flag bearer for a genre that was reinventing itself during the decade. Many metal stalwarts were bore out of the decade and began their emergence elsewhere. while the public dabbled in grunge, alternative rock, new jack swing's later age, hip hop's rise and even the nu-metal foundation, metal rich Europe was going through a metal explosion, America experimented with sounds while slowly phasing out the hair metal cycle, while the thrash boom echoed in the background with faded attempts to modernise. Even Pantera wasn't the Pantera that began their metal journey in the 80's, but used reformed groove to add an aggressive edge. The band is important, it kept a metal band in the eye of the public from time to time, that was very good, considering it was being coupled with hard rock's attempts to hang on (mostly with poor results.) But a spade needs called a spade. Grunge didn't kill metal, metal was far from dead in America (look in Florida, especially) and the casualty of headbangers ball came from a music network acting like a network and rebranding itself.

I have to respectfully disagree. The 90's was a period of tremendous growth, progression and fruitfulness for Metal. Take into all the hugely influential albums and bands that came out of the black metal, death metal, melodeath, progressive metal, mathcore, grind, doom and metalcore. Most of my favourite bands started in or where at their peaks in the 90's. E.g: Dream Theater, Agalloch, Meshuggah, Converge, In Flames, Dark Tranquility and many more.

A lot of my favorite albums came out in the 90's! There were rock and metal bands playing arenas and I remember seeing Megadeth on mtv a lot. Grunge didn't kill anything. I don't think grunge is even a genre, just a label put on Seattle bands by the media. You can't forget about the death and black metal scene.
@pedrosantos37127 жыл бұрын
They're generic? Come on. All metal bands after Pantera created the concept of "generic" by ripping off their style and try to be Pantera. Machine Head for an example, gets so much attention and its just so bad imo. They constantly abuse natural harmonics to sound cool and all their music is a bad attempt to sound like Pantera
@lindseyormsbee6 жыл бұрын
Peter Saints I like the way Logan Mader used the harmonics, but I feel like it got cheap after him. He knew how to use them in the right place and now it's more like their just filler.

@shreddiekruegertown22808 жыл бұрын
To me, Pantera reached the peak popularity while still maintaining a somewhat underground vibe. They were basically at the level of Metallica around 88-89 Justice era. They were able to headline arenas but were still outside of the mainstream. Pantera never wrote their Enter Sandman which could have propelled them to greater fame. Phil was probably the main reason for this because out of each member he was the most extreme in his listening tastes. As much as I love Dimebag, I feel he allowed himself to be influenced by current metal trends when he did Damageplan. That record has many tropes that were popular at the time and the album is so much weaker than anything he did in the 90's. Anselmo did Down and Superjoint after Pantera keeping all trends out of the music. Like him or not he was a huge part in keeping Pantera on the outside when they could have easily went for the mainstream paydirt.

As can be clearly seen here, Pantera has some of the most of no THE most loyal fans out there....Personally I'm a die hard....have been since the first time I heard CFH....but your not into them, that's ok...I will admit, Phil has had some rather "white supremacy" moments over the years, but I never picked up on that from the rest of the band. honestly I REALLY loved Pantera due to Dimes guitar work...IMO that's what really set that band apart....I bought the majority of their CDs back in the day just for the solo's....Even w Damage plan. I agree that Damage Plan was no Pantera....but Dime still shredded up those solo's just the same....So for me, Pantera was Pantera because of Dime....just my opinion..

@Alazerith8 жыл бұрын
***** Musically disinteresting and does challenge the listener? That sounds like a bunch of horseshit cobbled together by a dude who probably only listened to the song once. The main riff is absolutely weird, unique, and instantly recognizable, and they are somehow able to fit it in with the rest of the song perfectly. The vocals are the best that Anselmo has to offer and they are incredibly emotional and gripping. The solo is simply perfect...just about everything on this song emphasizes perfection and memorability. It's a classic. What exactly needs to challenge the listener? Not all songs have to be progressive music. I love progressive metal just as much as the next fan, but don't be a progressive elitist. Ain't cool dude :P lol
@Alazerith8 жыл бұрын
"The main riff isn't weird in the slightest, nor is it unique. Recognisable? Yes, but only because it's so basic." Basic does not mean bad. Most of the the greatest riffs of all time are simple and easy to pull off. Iron Man, Smoke on the Water, etc... And you don't find that second riff in the song weird, you know the one that has the five notes ending in a screech of sorts? I found that weird in the implementation and use of it. Don't really get that much in songs. "Phil Anselmo's vocals are filled with roid rage posturing. The ego drama path towards stupidity." Anselmo's vocals are beautiful, but that's your opinion so it ain't going to change. As for his ego drama...the song is about facing death and how he should have let himself cry instead of bottling up the pain...how is this exactly ego driven? And by the way, there is rage in his voice, because the song being about bottled up emotions has moments of and I quote "This love would end in rage". Whether he's being stupid or not is debatable, but the lyrics are very well written, personal, and fit perfectly with the vocals he is delivering. "implying I referred to prog metal, implying I like prog metal" Yes, I did assume you listened to prog because it's one of the metal music genres I can think of in metal that could "challenge the listener" in the way that you speak of. Sorry if I insulted you. Not my intention. Maybe you listen to black metal? Some Djent like Meshuggah which would explain your reasoning for "challenging the listener"? No idea honestly. I listen to all genres. Point is, many other metal genres, especially if referencing heavy metal, is stuff like Pantera delivers.

I remember he got some heat for lyrics on Vulgar that people has construed as racist, and he was adamant in interviews that he was not and that he was attempting to put down the racial thing on all sides and have people approach each other as fellow humans (or something to that effect). I haven't kept uo with him since then, except for an interview or two that cemented my perception of him as a self important, obnoxious blow hard who wants you to believe that he is wiser and much more insightful than he is. I don't hate the guy, but his fragile ego (compensated for by his ever increasing need to be seen as "harder" and "tougher" both in and outside the music) cleary was the cause of the end of Pantera. The nutcase that killed Dime can't be layed at the feet of Phil any more than at the feet of the childish fans who ate up and perpetuated the drama, and ultimately it was the nutjob's decision and action, nobody else's. This list sounds like a bunch of schoolgirl drama as well. Grow the fuck up people, it's just a band. Enjoy their music or don't, and move on.

Vinnie's drumming was perfect for their style, Dime was a badass riffer and monster soloer, Rex played a phenominal roll in thickening up the sound of a band that only had 1 guitar and Phil's raw vocals were cutting and rugged. They've been a huge influence in my own guitar playing. Awesome band!

The Abbott brothers will always be legends. They were proud of their southern roots, loved their friends, family, and fans. The band had a sound that was like a freight train and they never let up. I'm going to require proof of this claim,Nate.Here are some proofs of mine. 1.Blind Guardian is in EVERY way better than Pantera(lyrically,musically,skill of band members,diversity and quality of discography etc).Same applied for Death,Gamma Ray and Iron Maiden 2.Pantera has an AWFUL lack of creativity.Basically,everything from "Cowboys from Hell" onwards is a cheap copy of Exhorder.And what's more sad is that albums from "Cowboys from Hell" onwards are the only reason people love Pantera 3.I never liked comparing an album to a discography,but here it goes:"Sad Wings of Destiny" is better than anything Pantera ever released.This also applies to "Years of Decay",first three Metal Church albums,"Ironbound" and "Infinite" 4.Dimebag's death is the only reason why everyone appreciate him so much and consider him the best metal guitarist ever.Before his death,few people though much of him.And then,all of a sudden,BOOM!He died,and everyone loves him,tons of guitars are made in his style,etc,etc 5.Phil Anselmo is a great vocalist,I gotta say.But all vocalists from the bands I mentioned,except from Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth,easily defeat him in vocal range and control 6.Pantera's fanbase is one of the worst I ever saw 7.Pantera is the reason some shitty Nu-Metal,Metalcore and Djent bands like Slipknot exist.Don't believe me?Listen to anything by Slipknot,and I'm sure you'll find tons of Pantera influences in it Want some more?

Sorry,didn't mean anything bad with that.Of course I heard those solos,and I do think that they're amazing and he definitely was a cool guy.It is just that it's very often that musicians in metal or even in general get way too much praise than they deserve if they're dead.Take Chester Bennington for example.Since he hung himself,love of his fans and the number of fans jumped really high.And that can be said for a lot of people who died.The thing is,that love and fame is quite often undeserved and would never be achieved if the said person didn't die.And I really don't think that Dimebag is an exception,even though I think he's a really cool guy,and an great guitarist.I can name a lot of solos filled with heart and soul(Death - Voice of the Soul,Without Judgement,Empty Words,Lack of Comprehension;Blind Guardian - Nightfall,Battlefield,Time What is Time,Somewhere Far Beyond,Banished from Sanctuary;Gamma Ray - Rebellion in Dreamland,Send me a Sign,Wings of Destiny,Land of the Free and many others by other bands),and Floods and Cemetery Gates are definitely among them

@martijnstuart958 жыл бұрын
Springfeeeel It has nothing to do with the "roughness" of the lyrics... I enjoy death metal bands like Carcass and Death that spew disgusting and violent lyrics. The problem is that that is fantasy. I can't see the guys from Death or Carcass go out and brutally murder someone, but I can see Phil Anselmo go beat the shit out of some concerned dad.
@Springfeeeel8 жыл бұрын
+The Stargazer Sorry but that's just unfounded bullshit. Phil has never done anything even remotely like that in his personal life...that I know of. And sometimes you fucking have to be a tough guy. I'm happy that people like yourself haven't had too many hardening or humbling experiences in life...but I have and I understand a guy like Phil even if it's 90% a gimmick. I think you're stereo typing and judging before understanding.

Im from Houston and used to go see Pantera before they hit big with CFH ! They were cool guys and ALWAYS delivered never seen a bad show back then & after they broke out . They were Metal when Metal wasnt really cool and yes they kept the flag of Metal flying through the 90s . Period . I think Anselmo bought into his own hype especially early on ? In those club days he was the quiet one and Dime was the Party Maestro . I partied with them to many times to count and they took it very seriously . Great HM band and should always be mentioned with the greats . Dimes guitar sound and style on those first 3 records was genius period ...

Well, speaking for myself, when I first got into metal I got the impression that if you're into metal then you HAD to be into Pantera, like it was a unwritten rule, since every metal fan I knew worshiped the band as gods. Every metal guitarist worshiped Dimebag Darrel. But the only album I liked was Far Beyond Driven. I didn't hate them, I just thought they were over-rated. Besides, I was more into Fear Factory, Ministry, Nine Inch Nails and KMFDM. What can I say? I'm more of an industrialist...

We all know pantera isn't pantera without The king of the strings Mr. Dimebag Darrell. When phil joined the band in 1985 they were still glam and Dimebag created a way to make his own style that's how Pantera became more successful thanks to Dimebag who put his love and soul to the guitar and making emotional sounds.

I like some of their songs and Darell is genuinely a good guitarist but I'm not a fan of his tone. Not to mention they brought the meathead attitude in metal and people wonder why we have stuff like Five Finger Death Punch being popular lol. Either way, they are so much better bands from Europe during the 1990's that I can't really bother that much with this band.

+Phantomonium Not to mention america is so in love with their nu metal during 1994 and onwards after the whole grunge thing kinda died down. Pantera was cutting edge when they were together pantera is one of my favorite bands
@RuffisInc6 жыл бұрын
People need to give it a rest with the Rex and Phil vs Dime and Vinnie. It was nowhere near as black and white as that. Vinnie was toxic and inadvertently pushed them all away over the course of the the last 8 years of the band. First Phil moved to the second tour bus with some of the roadies around 95, then Rex did around 98/99, which really upset Dimebag leaving him alone with his insufferable brother who was taking different women on the bus every single night at the point in an attempt to try and get laid, and when it didn’t work, turning into a 10 year old who didn’t get the toy they wanted for Christmas, taking it out on everyone else. It got so bad that Dimebag actually spoke to Rex about getting a 3rd bus for the RTS tour just to get away from Vinnie but he didn’t feel like he could move to Phil and Rex’s bus as it would upset Vinnie even more. The sole reason people dreamed up the Rex and Phil vs Dimebag and Vinnie thing was because of Down. Phil and Rex only wanted to record the album purely for enjoyment, take a break and then get back to Pantera but the other Down members and the record label pushed for a tour, which Phil was in no fucking state whatsoever to do at that point. It’s well known that Phil was clearly out of his mind on the RTS tour, but would still put on a great performance. Go and watch some videos of Down around 2002. It’s sad and painful to watch. Poor bastard doesn’t even know where he is... Sad thing is, if Phil just went to Rehab after the RTS tour came to an abrupt end (due to 9/11), I whole heartedly believe that they could’ve sorted things out, but don’t let things fool you, Vinnie was the problem in the band. On the day of Dimebag’s funeral when Rex and the Abbott family went to the funeral home, Vinnie started shouting at Rex of all people, screaming “Look what you did”. I don’t care if you’re in grief, that’s a fucking awful thing to do or say to someone. The way Vinnie handled things after Dime’s death really summed him up. He never spoke to Phil again and pretty much stopped talking to Rex too. They weren’t the insane fuck who shot Dimebag in the head during performance, nor were they the ones who sold a weapon to this bastard with a history of mental health issues, nor were they the security who outright failed at keeping the band safe.
