Thank you for everything you put into this side hobby of yours. I was on the brink of buying a used m9 monochrom for 2.9k after watching this video. It would be my first rangefinder and my first Leica. I also remembered your voice in my head saying gear doesn't matter. After careful deliberation, I realised I still couldn't afford a Leica at this point with a young toddler in tow. I backed out and will keep taking pictures with the gear that I have. You're a good and kind person. I pray for nothing but the best for you and your family.

I find your videos very enjoyable . They remind me of when I shot with M2's and M3's in the early 1970s - I remember dickering over the price of a perfectly fine used M3 and getting it for $400. I was terrible at shooting with those cameras - of course they weren't suitable for sports photography (I was a magazine staff photog). I like your photos because they have a similar feel to my favorites from that era - non-sports subjects like two bicycles leaning against a tree trunk and looking just like two sweethearts in love - I sold that one to a bike fanatic who printed cards with it. I enjoy the classy tight presentation - it all just fits together so nicely. Tak sa micket, for the very pleasant times, one photographer to another.

I was really tempted to pick up an M Monochrom late last year and ended up getting an M9 instead. I usually shoot Color and Black and White 50/50 so I didn’t want to make the jump to a pure B&W camera. But it does have great low light performance compared to the M9 I agree on the price point for these cameras too. I paid $1200 for an M8 with the Voigtlander 35mm Nokton lens and $2400 for an M9 with a new sensor and the sapphire glass screen upgrade. The deals are out there patience is the key.

I love my 246 and the three Leica lenses I have (28, 50, 90), render wonderfully on it. Mind you, they render colour wonderfully on my m10 as well

I would gladly swap my M240 for the M9 Monochrom. It and maaaybe the M10 Monochrom (probably the best CMOS mono sensor they've made) are the closest I can get to my Foveon BW, but still shoot a Rangefinder :)

i have the dp2m and the photos are amazing. I havnt owned a m monochrome but I just found one for sale. The thing i hate about the dp2m is the amount of batteries required. I have 6 and that is not enought o get me through an hour

CCD Sensors are some wild magic. my k10d has the best colors SOOC that i have tried to date. my olympus is almost as good. also, i have checked the colors in prints and theyre awesome. long live the old ccd magic!

It seems to me that it is something done above all in the field of astrophotography, but I am pleasantly surprised by the excellent results that can also be obtained in more common areas. Seems we have the same taste for lenses. I shoot my Leica M2 with the Zeiss Planar 50 and the little Voigtlander Skopar 35. Both are excellent lenses! BTW I agree with your comment regarding prices, bought my M2 for 600 Euros, now the same shop is asking no less than 2000 😳

I adore my m8 and use it so much more than the Monochrome. The mono is great and produces gorgeous images but it just hasn’t gelled with me. I’m tempted to sell to fund a medium format camera for landscapes but always will wonder “will I regret this” if I do

I don't know what a right price is but I paid a fortune for this one and I don't regret it. Actually it was much too expensive for me but somehow I managed to buy one and it'll stay with me for ever. And it's much cheaper now

The first camera is always special. I miss my RX100 a lot. It's size, power and features just don't compare to the GX9. And I don't think there ever will be another option that comes close.

Despite the difference in the sensor size and pixel resolution, which black and white did you prefer in between the M8 and the M9M, having both the CCD sensor? I've read the M8 gives a more contrasty and grainier filmic look with less dinamic range. The advantage of the M8 is that it's way cheaper than M9M. Thanks!

Great video as always. My biggest worry now is the aging batteries of the M9. I’ve heard of a few people experiencing shorts from knockoff eBay batteries and the Leica ones are no longer made. What are your thoughts?

The Leica batteries are still available and I’ve never had any issues with third party on any camera.

If the seller doesn't have paper work there is a button sequins one can press to open a hidden menu. There one can check the sensor ID which be 15 or 16 on the M9 and 53 on the MM.

Hi Mattius, I bring to your attention to issues regarding the film mode for type 240. In low light, vivid and even smooth color mode causes much more exaggerated peripheral light fall off than the off mode in color (i.e., color JPEG as is), even with 50mm and most certainly significantly more with 28mm and wider lenses. Is this normal?

I used to own one. Was thinking about getting back into Leica by buying an old CCD Monochrome. THE BIG PROBLEM with their CCD sensors was they broke down and had to be serviced for free by Leica. If you buy a CCD Leica, ensure the sensor has been replaced and the seller has the paperwork.

From time to time I think about the monochrom but then I look back at my experience with the M8 and M9 and the loud shutter and the bad display and I'm cured again. For me it would be M246 or newer.

You can check the sensor in the hidden system menu. I would sell mine instantly if I got $4000.. I probably couldn’t get more that $3000, and that’s mint with only 3000 exposures.

Even Monochrom cameras with the replacement sensor can corrode. There was a second replacement sensor that didn’t corrode.

That’s what I said. But what you say is not exactly correct. The replaced that corrode didn’t get the new sensor. There was no in between sensor.

It’s the sensor cover glass that corroded due to oxidisation. Leica initially replaced corroded sensor glass with the same glass till circa 2016. After that date they used a different cover glass that so far has stood the test of time.

Digital Leica died with me with the M9 Debacle, CMOS M10 and the Sony A7 line, I miss actual range finding, but it's just not worth the drama. Anything they can do Sony and Chinese lens manufacturers can do better. I will always love my M6, but I sold my M9 the second I got a replacement sensor.

It looks very nice, but it's not for me. Every time I try to commit to monochrome luck hits me with a beautiful colour scene. And after Sam L Streetlife's take on shooting monochrome for a year confirmed my fears, I think I would end up carrying those tri-chrome filters with me everywhere. 😂 CCD sounds nice, but I don't know the difference. Maybe one day I could get my hands on a regular M9 and the 28 elmarit.
