They're good a good investment, with high resale value. Unfortunately, prices are also high for brand new ones, especially since it's been out for 4 years now. That being said, this is my favorite Micro Four Thirds camera of all time, so I'd say it's worth owning one.

I bought a GX8 in 2016, and another in 2019. The EVF is great, I never use the screen but it might be useful in the future. I only take stills, usually landscapes or wildlife, was tempted to get a G9 instead this time but a few factors swerved me back to another GX8, cost being one of them!

Reason 1-4 I agree 100%. Having many cameras from Canon, Fuji, Olympus, Sony - this is the one I use always. I never thought that Panasonic is so good. Canon has better menue, Fuji is nicer, Olympus has good creative filters, Sony the best sharpeness. Best compromis of all is the GX8.

I use a GX8 all the time, for everything from underwater photography, to pro-product shots, birding, stop-motion animation, event photography and 4k tutorial videos. It's the most versatile camera I've ever used. Fuji XT-3 looks like a close match, but then I don't imagine you'd be able to shoot at 800mm handheld at 1/25th of a second with that; lenses are far larger for the Fuji too. Amazing how this camera from 2015 still stands up against cameras from 2018. Really appreciate the amount of manual controls you get with this camera. Definitely want to see more of that from Lumix. I imagine a GX8 mkII could be the absolute perfect all-round camera if they choose to develop one.

I'm hoping that the GX8 wasn't just an experiment from Panasonic, and that it is in a 4-year cycle like the LX100, which would mean that sometime in 2019 we would be seeing a MK II pretty soon. Honestly, I wouldn't want them to change anything as far as the layout is concerned because it feels amazing in the hand, but I do want to see the new bells and whistles that we've seen in the latest models released by Panasonic like Dual IS 2 with the latest stabilization.

I bought mine about an year ago and never regreted! Hey, I just bought it in 2022. It is absolutely mint. No scratches, dents, bumps, etc. Screen is mint. Cost: $350. Also, the EVF is large and clean. You're right about the auto-focus. I use manual. But the shutter shock is very real and using the electric shutter causes wavy lines when shooting fast subjects. The 14-140 is especially bad.
@GinoriYT
@GinoriYT 2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, since the camera is many generations old, it is unlikely that they will fix it in firmware. Still, if you can get past that, it’s a fantastic camera even in 2022, and especially at that price. Enjoy it!

Great video! I was out all day yesterday shooting video with this camera. Don't forget it's weather sealed too. I can fit the body, 12mm, 15mm, 12-60mm, Leica lenses, the 20mm pancake, batteries, a charger, accessories and ND's in a single bag no bigger than a school lunchbox. I can't believe Panasonic doesn't still offer this design. The GX9 is a replacement for the GX7, NOT This! The only MAJOR flaw is that stupid 2.5mm mic input which gave me grief at times with my adapter. BTW ...thanks for the link, I bought the one your using, it's a better design.

I would love to see a true replacement of the GX8, but it's not looking like it'll happen. Anyone who's spent some time with this camera would tell you that it's one of Panasonic's best cameras they've ever made, and I would honestly like to see a new one with all the new bells and whistles found on the S1/S1R.

You're right, the GX85 does have some features like Dual IS 2 that are more advanced than the GX8, and the GX85 is a great camera as well, I was simply prefer the GX8 because of its handling, as well as the articulating screen + mic input. If you're patient, and look on eBay you will find open box/gray market deals going for under $600. They still sell for $800+ brand new, but I don't know if that's a really good deal now in 2019. Hopefully a GX8 MKII is in the works and will be announced this year.

I bought mine a year and a half ago, it's a great camera, and the GX9, although a nice camera, is a serious downgrade. There are a couple of small gripes, like you mentioned, the AF in video (only in 4K though, in FHD it is quite acceptable), and they could have avoided blocking the HDMI out when recording in camera, that's just done to "protect" their GH line, it would be cool to have that. The fn button on the front, between the lens and the grip, is in a kinda meh position too. Oh and - wishful thinking - a joystick for AF point selection would also be really nice. That's about it I can think of in regards to "negatives". Best value for money in m43 since its launch, hands down.
@GinoriYT
@GinoriYT 6 жыл бұрын
I have to agree with you, the GX9 is merely an updated GX85, and not the update to the GX8. But for the most part, anyone buying the GX8 will find that it has most of the features you can find on Panasonic's newer models, so it's still very much relevant, even in 2018.

I agree, there are certain things I wish that could be better, but overall it's a fully-featured camera that offers a lot of bang for the buck. The GX9 is definitely a step in the wrong direction. We can only hope there's a GX8 Mark II on the way, but it'll be hard to beat the GX8 right now.

Hi Ginori, it's a nice video. I also interested in GX8, better than GX9. But I'm wondering about the "shutter shock" problem that found when this camera went to the market at very first time, is the problem still occured?
@GinoriYT
@GinoriYT 6 жыл бұрын
The problem is still there, but with the latest firmware update it will give you the option to select a smart mechanical+electronic setting that will help mitigate the issue. Unfortunately that's the best they could do as this is a hardware issue, but they did correct shutter shock on the GX85, and GX9 with a newly designed shutter.

Hi and nice review. I really want one of these and have found one on ebay that I like. However, I am reluctant due to what I have heard about IBIS and video. As an owner (and a recent one) can you confirm your experiences with IBIS shooting in both 4k and 1080p and whether it works at all with non stabilised lenses such as the 15mm Leica? Or does it even work with Image stabilised lenses. I would love someone to finally shed some light on what appears to be a very grey area on internet forums. Many thanks.
@GinoriYT
@GinoriYT 6 жыл бұрын
Well here's the thing, IBIS works in 1080P, but not in 4K. The lens stabilization does work, and you can see an example in a previous video that I uploaded titled Volar en Globo. It was shot in 4K, and I used the 12-60mm Panaleica the entire time. I hope that I was able to answer your question.

I no longer have the GX8 as it was stolen on my trip to Mexico. That said, the GX9 has the latest sensor technology, and it is going to be updated more frequently, and now that the GX8 is getting older I don’t know if you’re okay with that. I personally would only consider the GX9 if portability is a priority for you, but the GX8 is still a great camera, and will serve you well.

No ibis when recording video is the main turn off for me. Panasonic just get a wrong move at this one. They want to copy canon strategy by not giving everything on a camera and pushing people to make harder choice or buy 2 to have everything. I'm glad they realized this is a wrong moves and fix it with g85 except for that boring black uninspiring canon big fat dlsr like design
@GinoriYT
@GinoriYT 5 жыл бұрын
It has IBIS for 1080P, just not for 4K. That being said, I think that even though the GX8 has some video centric features, it's a stills camera first. I still wish they had kept IBIS during 4K video recording, and that would've made it the best compact camera for hybrid shooters. As far as the G85 goes, I actually like the G85 being big because it has an utilitarian design that focuses on camera handling while still being light weight, and so if you're using the camera for hours it doesn't become as cumbersome as other hybrid cameras out there.

@@GinoriYT seriously? IBIS at 1080p 60fps? i watched at david Thorpe and he said it doesn't has IBIS at rec video mode. geez now i have to think again between this or g85 LoL. IBIS at 4k will be really great but i doubt my PC can keep up rendering the 4k videos, so 1080p 60fps is enough for me. i agree the g85 is more comfortable to hold but the design just too obvious that this is a serious camera so it will has issues when i brought it to places that not allowing people to use dlsr, some places in here charging 100dollars for using dlsr and that's why i kept searching for g85 alternative. the second thing is no usb charging. the 3rd is 16mpx vs 20mpx with lp filter. my primary use are landscape photography, jewellery & model kit. i still confuse between higher megapixel vs low mpx+no lp filter. i hope you can share your thoughts about it. thx you.
@GinoriYT
@GinoriYT 5 жыл бұрын
I was under the impression that it did have IBIS for 1080P (Not sure about 60P), but I'll have to look into that. That being said, if IBIS is high on your list of priorities then the G85 will serve you better than the GX8 whether for video or stills. Yes, USB charging is nice and being that this camera is 4 years old it's to be expected. Also, I'm not sure if the G85 does support USB charging. If you're going to compare the two side by side I would say that the difference in sharpness is not noticeable, but you do have the advantage to print larger with the GX8 plus the ability to crop if you needed to without loosing a lot of the image. Overall, I think that there are always compromises that need to be made when chosing a camera, but the GX8 is a solid option if you want to be more discreet while at the same time having jam-packed features (for a 2015 camera) in such a small camera body. It'll be 4 years since this camera was released in July, so hopefully Panasonic addresses some of the issues with a GX8 MKII update. We'll have to wait and see.
