Please get your facts correct, the correct name of the breed is Queensland Heeler.No Septic Tank created name is relevant to an Aussie dog. This was in fact the name given to the dogs bred from Halls heelers and Timmins Biters. Blue and Red refer to the tick of the dog. Reds actually have a more predominant dingo gene than blues. Told to me by my Grandma, Emma Selina Hall.

I recently took in a 1.5 yo ACD male. I’ve had dogs my adult life...Chows, Akita now this guy. The first two weeks I thought he was feral. After researching the breed I got him plenty of balls and herding balls. He loves the herding ball and we play many times a day. I didn’t think he was going to work out but every day he showed progress with training. Now he is my first Velcro dog, so smart and funny too, very protective, very loving and I’m wondering where this breed has been all my life. At 58 y.o. I feel this guy is going to keep me young and active. I love him so much!

Having a velcro heeler IS life changing hey, the bond is amazing! One of the things my red heeler does is make me laugh all the time. He knows how to tickle me under my arms, he does crazy ant moves on his back, which always crack me up. I can't put a shoe on without him thinking it's his cue to wrestle with me. Seriously so much fun, and every day I'm grateful for the companionship. It really is like having a best friend.

Our cattle dog, Sue, died nearly four years ago from old age. She needed training in nothing. Everything was inherent. She was actually smarter than many people I've known. Sue became attached to two people (us), and anyone about whom we showed affection: adult children, etc. Amazing dog. God I miss her. Good video.

Yep mate. I’ve had 2 Heelers and 1 kelpie. All grouse dogs. With the healers, my wife walks them at 5.30-6.00 every morning on her own. She is in the safest of hands. Anyone that walks near her, the dogs put themselves between them and won’t take their eyes off them. Heaven help anyone that threatened her. Extremely loyal, tough and protective of any of our possessions. Just watch out for nipping others that aren’t in “their circle”. Ruthless.

Goodonya Cobber! Bloody grouse dogs, and bloody grouse you actually know the name and not some Sepo made up name. Gotta say, when the Queensland heelers are done, the Kelpie is just getting warmed up. Knuckleheads use Kelpies for cattle, when Blues and Reds were bred for cattle, Kelpies for sheep. You are dead right about protective, Heelers are pack dogs by nature, and will, as you say, ruthlessly defend the pack! Built like brick shithouses, and tougher than Dermott Brereton in a Grand Final! Reckon those dogs get the royal treatment!

All heelers are not the same. I had one for almost 12 years. Just had to put his to rest due to cancer. He was never aggressive towards anyone. Never bit anyone. Was very loyal. But I got him when I was single in 2011 and had him for 2 years by myself then moved in with my girlfriend who had 3 other dogs and he fit right in with the pack. And he actually started to follow my girlfriend around more then me. That being said. They are the best dogs and I miss my boy so much. R.I.P bubba 11-4-2010 to 12-23-2022

I've never had to work so hard to meet a breed's demand. But, it's been the most rewarding experience with my little buddy. Scout is an amazing dog and the first year of his life has challenged and changed mine for the better. I'm a much better dog owner and enjoy every minute with him on our adventures.

Aus shepherd is in no way related to the Queensland Heeler, in fact they have nothing to do with Aus at all. There are only 2 breeds of dog totally Australian, The Queensland Heeler, red or blue, and the Kelpie. Both Herding dogs, The Heeler much more robust, the Kelpie much more athletic and smarter.

I gotta tell you my little blue heeler watch me like a hawk when I had complications after surgery. She knew when I was in pain which was probably obvious but she wanted every step I took. This dog is loyal and loving. She wouldn’t even let my other dogs near me and the pain got too much. Never had a blue healer before end it took a short while to get used to her mannerisms but from the day I got her she was weaseling her way into my heart and she knew just what to do

I had a frinch pit / cattle dog mix, he was the smartest dog I have ever owned. We rescued him from a shelter at 4 months old and had him until he was 7 years old. He developed a spinal cord lesion in his back and it paralyzed his back legs. Unfortunately we had to put him down about 3 months ago and I have cried every day for him...he was my baby boy. Cattle dogs are very smart and very protective.

I have a Blue Heeler. He's built like an absolute unit and just loves his family. We got him out of his herding/nipping stage pretty quickly, and while he wouldn't make the best working dog (doesn't have that intense herding instinct that other heelers have), he is an intense watch dog. He seems to love taking watch for long periods of the day. Lots of people love our Blue Heeler and ask if they should get one. However, I do talk people out of them. Out of all my dogs (owned a German Shepherd, Labrador and a Spoodle), my Blue Heeler required the most work to get him adjusted to our family's life style. That being said, the work definitely has paid off, because he's the best dog I have ever had. Also if you love camping like my family does, these guys are outstanding companions when you're out in the bush!

Hi, I have an Australin Cattle dog named Sadie. She is 15 years old. We got her when she was about 7 months old. She is a very easy dog to care for. She tells us what she want and when she wants it. She is the red colored and very good looking. I am 74 years old and have had dogs all my life. The other real different dog was when I was only 3 years old. My father was stationed at Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage Alaska and brought home a pup found on the flight line in 1952. The pup was 1/2 wolf and 1/2 Husky. We called him Wolf. He grew to be very big. When I played outside in the dirt, he would be right by my side.

No matter the breed, if you wish to own any dog, you must be responsible. Training is a must as well as everything else. Once you are successful you can spot untrained owners from afar. But we all start somewhere. Just be sure of the commitment before you go for it.

I agree . The cattle dog is a rugged dog. Not afraid to challenge any threat that comes in its territory. There always checking their surroundings. You have to train there behavior not to be to aggressive when other dogs come around in their space or next to you. And plenty of room to run. Thanks for posting. 👍

I’m 2 weeks into life with my first cattle dog, Black Jack Dingo. My daughter bred her Blue Heelers and really did an amazing job handling all the puppies to help their development. I have a 5 year old stumpy tailed ACD. He has all of the attributes you point out in your video and more due to his intelligence. He's easily the most attentive of my dogs, is always looking for jobs to do or be involved in, is a ferocious guard dog and I think he would walk with me through the gates of hell. Their loyalty is incredible. My son has a red ACD and she is the same, absolutely besotted with him. However, these dogs need a lot of time, attention, and some times a firm hand to keep them under control. If you're looking for an easy dog who cuddles into you on the sofa and never demands much of you, then ACDs are not for you. They are like young children and need lots of attention - if you don't give them this, they will probably get destructive or aggressive. However, give them time and attention, and you will be rewarded with the most loyal friend you could ask for.

Got my lil girl Bindi two days ago and she is 11 weeks old , she already knows how to sit, fetch, sit, and stay and is adjusting to her name and training well, she will be my cattle and sheep herder and is already doing well better than I expected, not to mention she is wonderful with my 6 year old daughter couldn’t ask for a better dog 😊

#6 - They don't smell! I'm on my fourth! I call them "Wash & Wear". She can roll in mud and it dries and falls off. I've been around labs and retrievers and couldn't handle the smell. I'm sensitive to scents. No comment to her rolling in poop 😂

Love my Cattle Dog but I am SO glad I did research before getting him. I had never heard of the breed when my co-worker told me her dogs had puppies and wanted to know if I wanted one. It took a lot of work and I have learned so much even though I was always good with working with the dogs I've had before him. They truly do take a strong but calm person to handle them and a whole lot of patience if you are still learning how to work with them. Wouldn't trade him for any other dog.

From a new subscriber, superb!! When you talk about them being protective, that is an understatement! My wife and I can’t even hug each other without Bella going crazy! The only question we have is which one is she protecting??😆 The truth is she’s protecting both of us from each other!!😆 You’re right about the way they view strangers. We had a repair man over. Down the basement, he was scared to death of my son’s dog; a 100 pound Lab mix. I told him “It’s the one upstairs you have to worry about!” Someone asked me if I would be missing a dog if somebody tried to steal her when she’s on her chain. I replied that if a stranger reached down to get her, he’d be making a trip to the ER for stitches!!😆 She’s better than locking the car if you run into a store or something. (I still lock the car anyway!) A fridge repair man told us that a Heeler is the only dog that bit him on the job!!😆 Personally, I see all these things as good points!! 👍

We just adopted a 10 week old Blue Heeler/Labrador mix. I had never heard of Blue Heelers before we adopted him but since he was a rescue in a shelter, my priority was his life. So, I am trying to learn now. He is the sweetest, smartest pup I have ever met- learned to fetch, sit, come all in two days. I am a very active distance runner and look forward to having him as a running buddy when he's a bit older. That said, he is glued to me constantly, which might become a problem if I don't get him comfortable being alone for tiny chunks of time (like a few hours since I work from home.) I'm getting him training but does anyone have advice on how to train a puppy to relax a little when I am not at home or within his sight? I want him to be a confident little dude.

I was given a blue heeler many years ago that came from the Navajo reservation in Arizona. She was my introduction to the cattle dog. Best.Dog.Ever!! I've since rescued several more heelers. I recently lost my oldest heeler 😢, but 5 months after her death I rescued an abandoned heeler/pit bull/?? mix that is turning into an outstanding girl. My pack of 6 also includes two born deaf heelers rescued from out of Texas, a cattle dog/dachshund mix, an Australian shepherd, and a little red 11.5 lb. terrier who puts up and keeps up with them all. We walk/hike off leash at least 3 miles every day in open mesa area. I'm in NM. My pack is popular with others who use the area. People are always amazed how well 'trained' they are. I'm always amazed by the cattle dog breed. Even in the mixes, the cattle dog traits are always dominant. ❤🐾🐾❤

'Never go to the bathroom alone' is too real! My boy Captain Freckles will shoulder the door open just to do his sink-tub-window-tub-sink security check loop before plunking down with a huff right in the doorway. He's locked in to every sound we hear from our apartment, and *immediately* lets me know when he hears something unusual or Not Good. He's even tuned in to my bird's 'hey, I see something I don't like' calls-- he's smart enough to know that she can see stuff out the windows from her aviary that he can't. He literally puts himself between me and anything he thinks is scary, including shouty streetcorner men and trains passing on bridges down the block, he's incredibly cuddly and affectionate, cheeky enough to talk back but obedient enough to know when to quit being a stinker-- the list goes on! ACDs are some serious work (even the couch potatoes like Captain), but there is just no bond out there more rewarding than a friendship with an ACD who's elected you Their Person.

We adopted a Border Collie mix puppy from a shelter. Mom looked like black and white BC. DNA test said dad was 100% ACD. My girl is 50 % , 22% Sheltie, 17% BC, 11% Australian Shepherd. About 35 lbs. Smartest, sweetest, pup ever! Loyal, watchful, playful, intense. She’s my ACD mix and I love her. Would definitely get another ACD in an instant. Teach them what they need to know and they’ll do anything for you with fervor!

I love this breed so much. We definitely did out research before we decided on an ACD! It amazed me how intelligent our pup Truffle was from the minute we got her at 8 weeks old. Maybe 2 accidents in the house ever! Picked up tricks within minutes of teaching them the first time. We will always have an ACD!!

Similar to our experience, however, ours appears to be mostly Siberian Husky. Our ACD/Husky mix learned sit in like..5 repetitions. Insanely smart but, this just means they know exactly how to get what they want. This helps with positive reinforcement training but, can be difficult to handle their intelligence sometimes ;) haha.

Got myself a cattle dog by accident! We rescued a tiny black 8 week old puppy from a foster home. We were told he was a Schipperke! Theyre small black dogs who grow to be 20 lbs TOPS as adults. Well, over the last 3 months, little Loki has grown to be 30+ lbs at 19 weeks! His DNA resutls just came in, and he's 40% Australian Cattle Dog. Was NOT expecting that! There's also some German Shepherd, Husky, Rotty, and Border Collie. All super smart breeds! Makes sense, since Loki has been a joy to train from Day 1. Now that he's entering into his teenage phase, I can sense some of that Ausie stubborness, but overall, he's been a fantastic family dog. Absolutely wonderful! Cant wait for him to be a bit older so I can safely take him out running!

Totally agree. I have a 2 y/o red heeler and he is smart, loyal, and protective. He's always by my side and I usually walk him off the leash. The only problem I have with him is he likes to roam. A few times he's gotten out of the yard and returned injured from fighting. Just had him neutered yesterday so I hope that helps without changing his personality, I really like this dog.

Goodonya luv! First person i 've seen that actually knows the correct name for the breed. The Kelpie is correctly known as Kelpie, they were actually bred, and there are 2 different versions, one near Hamilton in Vic, and the other in central NSW. Both breed have Dingo in them. That dog of yours will go non stop!

When I got my first ACD I had no idea what I was getting myself into. His name was Ringo and he was 12 weeks old when I got him. He ate one of my couches, he drugged a whole bag of potting soil into my house. He shit all over my kitchen, and when we crated him he shit in the crate and rolled in it I think just to spite us. I was determined to keep him so I did a lot of research. After a lot of training and learning how to properly exercise him he was the best dog I ever had. I had a 105 pound lab pitbull mix at the same time and he was no match for my Cattle Dog. Thankfully, they worked that out early and their relationship. I now do rescue for ACD’s and my second ACD Jackie - O just crossed over a couple months ago. They are not my favorite breed and I will only get cattle dogs from now on.

Love your channel and heelers also. My 16 yo heeler passed a few years ago. He was my best dog. He had a serious crazy act meant to terrify. After formal introductions he never paid anymore attention to that person. I thought I was too old to do the work for another. So I have 2 pugs, and now a 4 month old half heeler thats red. I don't know what the other half is as she looks and acts all heeler. We're working every day and pugs are helping also. I've had her less than a week and she knows down, sit, she'll walk on a leash. When she put my hand in her mouth I screamed in pain and she hasn't done that again fingers crossed! She's stubborn and really smart. I swore with the first I'd never get another dog smarter than me!

(I’ve read it worked for consistent C student FDR with his cabinet picks.) Currently in mutual tutelage with an ACD rescue Marvelous character! Grateful

I have had dogs all my life. I am over 70 and my little red heeler is the most intense dog I have ever owned. She is 4 months old and is MY dog. A challenge for sure, but one that I think is well worth the effort.

I’ve got a red, could walk him off the lead at 10months old. He got attacked once by 2 other dogs and never been the same since, if he sees another dog he wants to get in 1st. 🤔

The weights of my cattle dogs are right around the 45 lb mark, except for two males which are 75 lbs and my stumpy male is just under 90 lbs. I had a wonderful red that I was training for the agility ring, and to get herding titles. Unfortunately I took her in to get spayed and she died on the table. It kinda knocked the wind out of my sails for training any of the others. I was scheduling her in for her first herding session when I got the call from the vet. I do have one that has got most of the tricks down for the trick dog certificate, but once CV happened everything came to a stop. I'm thinking this year I will start again with training. It builds the relationship and gives them one on one time since I always end training time with play time. Thank you for your videos. I just found your channel today. Maybe it's God's way of nudging me to get back to it.

I rescued a red heeler as a little four and a half pound puppy. Turns out she can't hear. But she's smart as a tack. I'm no professional but I've taught her some hand signs and she's loyal to death I do believe and you're right, you'll never go anywhere alone she's always on my heels. Lol

I adopted a well trained blue heeler 5 years ago. He is a great dog in every way. We have many acres that he ran on, we also get a lot of bears which he hates. It wasn’t a problem, he would bark and chase them to the edge of the yard, no further. A year later I adopted a red heeler x. She had been a barn dog, had never been in a house and required lots of training. Unfortunately, she hates bears too and will chase them and has even tangled with them. My blue guy, is very protective of us, but also her. Now we have the issue of if either of them spot a bear, they are off and running together and will not respond, it like they see a bear and all their training goes out the window, like they’re deaf. I have tried everything except an electric fence, which would be too difficult (around ponds and a number of brooks) but also too expensive. They are both high energy dogs and get lots of exercise, but the issue with the bears is ongoing and dangerous, my female was nearly gutted and required surgery to repair the bear damage. Any idea how to stop this behavior? Other than the bears, they are well trained with good behavior. I should mention that we live in a heavily wooded area in CT. and both dogs were adopted from Texas and probably never saw a bear.

Thank you, lost a female sheprador three years ago and people have been trying to get into my house and stealing because they can. Just took in an abandoned Red Heeler, who showed up at a customers ranch, aclimating him to cats, little rat terrier, turkeys, chickens and goats, he is doing well the what he sees everyday, turkeys and chickens after almost two days. Willing to work with him for two weeks he is so smart and affectionate, probably more than me.

I grew up with Cattledog mixs' my grandmothers' dog was half cattle dogs (quarter red, quarter blue) and half coyote. Smartest damn dog i ever met. I didn't know what a companion dog was until i grew up and now i have a cattle dog mix. Now i found her, but we think she was about 6 weeks when we found her. She is about 6 months now and everyone compliments her on her behavior. Shes always learning and I'm always intorducing her to stuff, right now her job is to learn and she loves it. Now that she is 6 almost 7 months, I plan to introduce her to different types of classes to see what her proper "job" or "jobs" will be. I love her so much and she definitely is my velcro dog, my partner is always jealous that she follows me and comes to me more than him. Despite him working so hard on their bond.

My dog is 60% Poodle 34% lab and 5.67% Australian Cattle Dog. And he is faster, smarter, tougher than any dog breed we've encountered. His bite strength is insane. Super great with people. I have it on my personal channel Doug Wulff. Awesome content!

I rescued a Blue Heeler from a high kill shelter in TX. For an extra $100 i rescued his sister I knew nothing about the breed. Socialized him and loved the little guy to pieces. I didn’t know what to expect!He was the smallest dog I’ve ever owned. He is badass! Chased Elvis Presley (my neighborhood brown bear) off my property, even though he was Fat Elvis, 450 pounds (November) at the time. Chases deer out of the yard. All of this is just Finnegan being himself! He also doesn’t chase anything into the forest bordering on my property. He is also a sweet love, but damnit! He is 45 lbs. of his own agenda and listens when he agrees with me. I should be more assertive, but why? He is a great Boy and isn’t quite yet 3!

Hey, new subscriber here! I just discovered your channel and I love cattle dogs! I think they're hands down the greatest breed, but I love how you're honest that they may not be for everyone. I can attest to this. I am in a wheelchair due to disability and in 2018 I got my first cattle dog. Not only was she my first cattle dog but she was my first working dog period. And oh boy, did I not know what I was getting myself into! Lol I read a lot about the breed before getting her, of course. But I'm sure other cattle dog owners can back me up there is no replacement for hands-on experience. She was the most difficult puppy I've ever had, and a few times during her raising I thought that I would have no choice but to give her up because I didn't think I would be able to control her given my physical limitations. However, she was and is my best friend and was glued to my hip I didn't give up and now she's actually my service dog! But it did take a commitment to training and exercising her every single day and it took about a full 2 years before I could say she was solidly trained the way I wanted. A few different trainers told me to give up on her that she was too stubborn and she would never be what I wanted. So glad I didn't listen! Her name is Willow and she is the greatest! I now have her, Aslan, my one year old red heeler, and and a one and a half year old Dutch Shepherd named Titan. I love them all so much, but heelers are uniquely special. I now help train service dogs for other people with disabilities. I do have one question though for the Cattle Dog community...I do know that the range for a cattle dog weight is 30lbs on the small side to about 50lbs on the larger side. I am wondering if there's anything that the owner can do throughout puppyhood to ensure that they are a bit stockier when full grown? I recognize that there's only so much influence you can have over this and genetics probably play the rest but both Willow and Aslan hang out at about 45lbs. As old as Willow is now I don't think there's any changing that. However, I more so want to know for future reference. Like for if and when one of them goes I were to get another Heeler puppy... I'm not sure if you will see this... but Im debating on settling an Aussi or Heeler. First off I live in a 1 bedroom in Dallas (lower Greenville- everything is walking and social patios- city life I guess). I run 3-5 miles 5 days a week. My ex-GF had an Aussi/heeler mix so I know the stubborn/protector/hyper thing: I loved it. My question is do you think I'm in trouble with a rescue either one? Is the constant barker normal?

depends on the individual dog. you can get a psycho one or a chiller one of either...hard to know that with a rescue, a breeder can you you find what you're looking for more. cattle dogs tend to be more one person dog in my experience

Your videos are great. I watched the 5 Reasons NOT to get a cattle dog and now this one. They’ve both given me a lot to think about. If I might ask a question, you mention that this is a one person dog. I’d be the one training the dog and I like training. All the dogs I’ve had over the years were trained to voice and hand commands with positive reinforcement. However, I have kids, none too young, and I’m curious how well a heeler would bond with the kids given that I’ll be the primary trainer. I’ll involve the kids in the training, so that may help. Ideally, I’d like them to be able to walk and play with the dog when I’m not around. Is this realistic? Finally, your ranch is beautiful.

I have heard some heelers are great in this area, but the majority of people I talk too with them will probably agree if you are the alpha of the house/primary trainer it will be bonded to you. I don't have kids so I can't relate personal experience, but Cowboy gets very protective of me circling me even when my mom hugs me & i know a lot of other heeler owners experience the same. I'm not sure your dog experience or how old yours kids are, but I think its safe to say in general not a beginner family dog. Hope this helps! Spend as much time with the breed as you can is my best advice

That’s what I was concerned with and based on your advice and that of some other folks, we’ve talked to, we’ve decided to get something else now and consider the cattle dog when the youngest kid is a little older. Plus, that way they’ll have a dog to hang with and I can get the heeler for me. Thanks again and best of luck with Cowboy. We’ll definitely give your back 40 products a try when we get whatever dog we end up with.
