Seeing that accordion impaled on there made me so happy :D Fighting the desire to quit is basically the main challenge of these monthly... challenges. It's not easy, but rewarding to get as far as possible :)

One Fall night in Old Quebec, a small old man was playing away on his accordion and the music with the street lamps and the smell of fresh cigarettes stayed with me throughout my life. It is a tribute to him. Each of the items in the drawing represents something, however small or insignificant. That accordion will always remind me of a very happy time, so impaling it was just fun! Thank you, Eve! I completely agree with you! Cheers! :)

Funny that it would be the Old Quebec! I have a similar memory, from the same place, one fall night as well. Except for me it was a young man with a guitar playing Sympathy for the Devil ;) I miss the Old Quebec at night, I spent most of my teenage years there!
@MDCampbell7 жыл бұрын
LOL! Sympathy! A song I've played on my own guitar, many times on bus and subway platforms in the city when I was young. I miss Old Quebec and haven't been there in 15 years. I spent a lot of time there, as I dated someone from there years ago. Memories! :)

Eve Bolt - Bolt's Vault 100% agree. There is a nasty head cold thing going on in the Northeast. I going through it too with this cold. I missed the underwater prompt and beat myself up for it. I put it this way you can’t be a marathoner if you are a casual runner or a couch potato. There are some days you want to quit but I am not about the “coach says walk it off” mentality either. I have come to an agreement with myself that Inktober is for me it is a way of self care for myself. Others may approach it their own way or have their reasons,but, you have to say why I decided I wanted to do this.

I am an amateur artist, and my rendering skills are frankly not very good. But I’m doing Inktober because ink is one of the mediums I love - I love the contrast between the black ink and white paper, and I love how it requires commitment to the bit - once the ink is there, it’s there, and there’s no point in regret. I make a little art every day anyway, and I’m confident this month will make me a little better.

Least you Don't have to do it for an grade in school. You have no idea how i just sit there looking at the paper thinking what do i do for this.
@MDCampbell6 жыл бұрын
Wait, you have a teacher who is making you do Inktober for a grade? That's unreasonable! It's not a bad idea, but to be graded on it... yipes! I hope you made it through!

I hear you. I fell off on day 2 because I fell ill. I'm still pretty physically exhausted, but I definitely want to pick the challenge up again once I feel better. Great artwork, btw, I love the details in it.

This reminds of other art challenges like 24 hr zines and 7days/7drawings. Sounds like the more rules you set for yourself the better. I'm new to this challenge but it seems like a lot of people are too focused on creating good art in their normal fashion, 31 days in-a-row. I think this challenge can force us into a new process resulting in something new that can eventually be incorporated into our personal style.

I'm sorry you've been feeling a bit crummy, it's been mostly the same over here for me, too, and while I've found trying to keep up with inktober a bit stressful, I've also found it......just.........mine. Exactly like you said, it gives you joy. (Even though it also includes stress. Haha.) I think the approach we should all take is do what you can for as long as you can, but only if you should. Only if it will make your life better, or your emotional state. I think I have to take a break from tomorrow's for exactly that reason. I don't want to flirt with the "I quit" idea when there's the "I'll just put this on pause for a bit" option. Totally agree that not all of these are going to be winners, and not every prompt is going to give you that spark. Loving the drawing you did for this, and I'm glad you're feeling more up to it. .....truth be told though, I actually really love the way your long arm of the law piece looks, too. I dig the sort of monster/horror vibe it gives off.

Love the video. Keep up the good work. This is my third year doing Inktober. Last year I quit, sort of, my arthritis got so bad I couldn't even hold a pen without pain. Did finish the challenge in November. This year looks good for finishing it on time. The prompts are terrific, makes you think outside of what you normally do. Fun Challenge. By the way I'll be 69 this year, so age is not an excuse either.
@MDCampbell7 жыл бұрын
Hi James Brenke! I sincerely appreciate your feedback, so thank you for that. My father suffers from arthritis, so I at least know the ordeal from an observer's seat. I cannot imagine, even though I'm coming into the later years of my life. I think it's fantastic that at sixty-nine you're willing to take on a challenge and have such a positive outlook with it. That only comes from experience and patience. I'm working on the patience part! lol! Thank you again, James! Cheers and best of luck! :)

Another great, thought-provoking video (even for someone who is not publicly doing Inktober). Glad to hear you're feeling better. And I love this drawing!

Yeah I think INKTOBER is about getting better and honing your skills as you say. I am already feeling more confident working small, but still have man many hours to put in. I will be practicing forever, though, that's a given. I jump around from one form to another. I am going to get into animation again real soon. I love doing pencil tests and old school style animation, hand drawn. Great illustration, so much detail...and wonderful talk, inspiring and helpful.

I'm working on these challenges, and it's kind of a slow go, I'm not posting them up - I did the first one and because I'd chosen to use a water color wash with it, several people in my "art newbie" groups misinterpreted my referring to being a real beginner (a lot of beginner groups have people who don't seem to be so beginner to others). So, I received handful of kind remarks and a lot of people explaining how I might improve the drawing. I don't mind the critiques. But I was misunderstood about what I was "new" at and there was no point in explaining it and drawing more attention to it. I've had a really hard summer / fall with my physical health. I started this challenge with great enthusiasm. I hand sewed a sketch book just for it - so I WILL complete these drawings. It may be November before I do. But who's going to know but me unless I tell them? I'm doing this because I do draw everyday, but generally with pencil so it's a challenge to work on it. Do the drawings kind of suck - probably? Am I "behind" yup. Am I bothered by it? Feeling pressured by it? Not so much. I don't have a blog or a you tube channel. I just have a life time worth of being told and believing that I couldn't do something . I'm done with believing it. I'm working to be as good at it as *I* can possibly be. With my eyesight and physical issues it's a challenge. But it's not a pressure to do. I wouldn't do it if it stressed me out. I have so many other ways to stress myself. Thanks for your videos. I enjoy the time you take to share with us. As for the contrarians - it's not nice - but some people enjoy planting seeds that can grow into doubt for some folks. I don't figure you're one of them. The folks that sow these seeds generally have an abundance of bad feelings in their pockets, so, Johnny Appleseed planted apple trees. Thumby Downer tries to sow doubt. It only grows where its fed.

Great video Mark! 😁 Congrats on the subs. For inktober, I just didn't have the time. Unless there is a way to say my burnings on wc paper count for inktober...lol 😆 They do look like sepia pen & ink. I'm glad you are feeling better. A lot of my lupus & fibromyalgia symptoms are similar to the flu (achy, fever, brain fog, etc). It is extremely hard to stay positive & focused, so I understand how you were feeling. 🤗 Take care my friend.

P.S. Hubcap wanted me to tell you: "I know your secret!" 😲 You sound extremely similar to the younger Kurt Russell. Hubby hasn't seen you, so he doesn't have a face to go with the voice. He was listening to this video & all of the sudden he looked up and said "he sound just like Kurt Russell". As soon as hubby said that I heard it! Your tone and everything is exactly like Kurt Russell!! 😆 if I didn't know any v etter, I would say you & KR are one...lmbo 🤣

Great video Mark.... Day 2 and 3 of my practice sketches came out a little too personal so I didn’t post them-but I still did them! I haven’t done much sketching with ink... I rather use a pencil because I have more control over it and I can erase my mistakes. Using ink feels foreign to me so that is the whole reason behind why I wanted to do this Inktober challenge - is to practice and become more comfortable with ink(0n day 3 I realized that it was really ok to use pencil first before using ink was a plus for me)🙂 thanks for sharing 👍 P.S. don’t worry about the thumbs down some people are just ignorant or just plain mean!
@MDCampbell7 жыл бұрын
Hi Lisa Swank! Thank you so much! I appreciate everything you wrote! I was trying to go in with just ink, but found myself much, much happier being able to sketch it out before inking. I think that's how most people go about it, including Jake Parker. Honestly, and to the point of my video, it doesn't even matter! Again, it's about us making our art to keep ourselves fulfilled and happy, in spirit. As for the thumbs down, you're right. I deleted my comment and will just ignore that stuff! Best wishes and have a super weekend! Cheers! :)

I've been enjoying inktober so far, from a personnel point of view it has helped me bring in more imagination than previous monthly challenges. From other challenges (march of robots, mermay) I have taken to drawing everyday but from a social media perspective it is actually a downfall if that is the correct term. It is so popular and well known your image is instantly swamped, you can post an image and in seconds it is gone. Smaugust for example (draw a dragon everyday in August) you could still see your image 30 minutes after posting on instagram and you would get a lot more attention, I'm pretty new to instagram so I'm sort of glad I chose less popular challenges first.

I havent skipped a single day but I failed this years challenge. I have an hour each day to do inktober and so far I was happy once only once. Seems like my page is now covered in ugly art I dont like but I kept posting since its part of the challenge. I expected this to happen but Im still dissapointed.
@MDCampbell7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing that, Tarin Vernon! In all honesty, I think the only real failure is the person who boasts about doing a challenge like this, but then never does anything and complains that the rules were unfair or they didn't have time or etc, etc. You are succeeding in just that you're putting forth effort, even if you're disappointed by it. Whether your art is ugly or beautiful is not up to you. Sure, you can have an opinion, but it's up to us - the viewers - to decide what is ugly or beautiful. Your job is to create, within that one hour per day, and put it into the world, as an example of your own, positive, personal contribution to the creative community and the universe... and for that, I think it's pretty awesome! Where are you posting to? I'd love to see, if I haven't already! Thank you and cheers! :)
@tarinvernon70077 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your kind words and this video. Maybe you are right. Its up to the viewers to decide. I dont think I would ever be happy with the results no matter what. You have some interesting views on things that I will have to consider. Thank you for taking your time and writing a reply. I post under the same name on instagram. But Im warning you its not worth much.
@MDCampbell7 жыл бұрын
Hi again. So, I went to your Instagram and have to be honest, I wasn't expecting much because you built it up as "not worth much." Really? Well, maybe I have the wrong Inktober artist, but your work is ridiculously good! I'm not one to blow smoke up your chimney, so I mean it sincerely. Your solution for Gigantic is just fantastic! You've got a unique style that is consistent from piece to piece, whether you see it or not. I dunno, I try to see the best in "bad" art, so it's much easier to see the "great" in really good art - and I think your work is right on! Cheers! :)

To your last point about not looking at other people's drawings until you've finished yours, I live in Japan which puts me a day ahead. I usually check Instagram throughout the day for inktober drawings, and can't find my day's themed drawings until the next day.

"Long" was an odd one to come up with for me too... until I thought of entrails ... why I went that way I don't know. Halloween though! So I made an adorable candy corn clown holding up long guts of another candy corn. I laughed the entire time I was drawing and inking it. I think it's going to be my favorite XD

Hello Sylvie Dufour! You always know how to make me feel so grateful and happy. I thank you for that. We all have so many stories to tell, but sometimes it's difficult to put them into words that people will understand. People who can draw have a gift to speak without words and with images. I'm just glad there are people who still enjoy looking at those images! Stay well and thank you so much! Cheers!!! :)
